When the Visual Basic compiler (Vbc.exe) crashes, Visual Studio fails to detect this and becomes stuck in an inoperable state. The "Build" menu appears as it would if the solution were building, but the Cancel Build (Ctrl+Break) menu item has no effect. Trying to close the application or the solution gives the error:
"The build must be stopped before the solution can be closed."
I can't find any way to remedy this short of terminating the devenv.exe process and restarting Visual Studio completely. Is there anything quicker and less severe?
I have a solution , Separates in 3 Project in VB.Net.Each Project Referencing in another project Except one of them.I want to Use cmd command VBC to Built project, (like this : #mce_temp_url# But it seem that referencing is big Problem. How can i solved referencing problem with VBC?

View 3 RepliesWe have a couple of DLLs that need to be put in the GAC at compile time only in Debug mode as this is what developers use locally. Release mode will be the Continuous Integration server build and we will not want to put any dlls in the GAC. We used to do something similar with post build events on a project, but if a post build event can be conditionally run if debug. What is the best way to achieve this?
View 2 RepliesI am on my second project. I made the mistake of trying to use my first project as a template thinking there was a 'Save All As...' which I found there wasn't.
I went through the whole project and now it is forcing me to use the folder names that everything is saved in from my first project and my professor wants the directories named a certain way.
If I try and change the names of the folders, then upon re-opening my solution I get errors because the directory has changed.
Is there a way for me to change the directory names and not have my program fall apart? Or re-direct it where to look after I change the folder names?
There is an older version of the software which works fine on all of our deployment platforms, but the version I am trying to push out is working fine on 32-bit desktop installations, but is crashing-and-burning when it attempts to access Crystal Reports and Informix installed DLLs on a 64-bit machine, running terminal server sessions (yeah, I know, could I change anything more about the deployment platform?)One of the suggested avenues of investigation was changing the solution platform from "Any CPU" to x86.On attempting to do this, Visual Studio seems to stop being able to connect the partial classes constructed by XAML objects, with objects declaring that they have no "InitializeComponent" methods, and then failing on down the line until I reach the maximum number of errors.
Oddly, changing the solution platform, and then rebuilding in Expression Blend compiles just fine. Changing the platform back to AnyCPU makes the problem disappear. All projects have compile and debug configurations set to Active. I can't see any reason why simply changing the targeted platform would stop the XAML from generating partial classes Okay, it seems to be that there are some external DLLs to the project, and that those are the cause of what I'd call the first-level compilation failure, as they don't seem to contain any classes once the target platform has switched. In VS2008, this causes the cascading failure of absolutely nothing working at all, as described above, but at one point I somehow managed to import the project to VS2010 with only those errors in place (missing classes, etc.), without the rest of the project imploding.I'm now working on reconstructing those classes from those DLLs, and hopefully will be able to get together a project that will compile on multiple target platforms by the end of the day.
From my DLL project I have succeded in making AutoCAD launch by pressing F5 from VB.net IDE (Visual Studio 2008) en route to try to make debugging of the DLL easier ...
... however one last obstacle is currently in the way and the obstacle is that for some reason when I hit F5 and AutoCAD is launched my breakpoints are not recognized at all... and program runs from start to finish instead of allowing me to debug ...
It issues a strange message which says "The following module was built either with optimizations enabled or without debug information... to debug this module, change its project build configuration to Debug mode..." and it is all weird because as far as I know I am not in release mode .. but in debug mode (anyhow I am relatively new to Visual Studio .NET so I am thinking that my impression could be that I am in debug mode when in actuality I maybe in release mode)...
Here is why I think I am debug mode ...
1. From Solution explorer ... when I click on the Solution Name and view its properties ... the Active config property says Debug|Any CPU
2. When I look at the properties of the project and look at the compile tab it says that the Configuration is Active (Debug) and under Platform it says Active (Any CPU).
3. Under the Advanced Compile Options of Compile Tab from project properties ... Enable optimizations is UNchecked ...
Anyhow with all the settings mentioned above it seems that I have everything okay but then the message above proves otherwise ... and so at this point I know that I am still missing something ... like a setting somewhere... wondering what else do you think am I still missing?
As additional info...there are seven projects in the solution and it is the main one (the one that I set as startup project) whose properties I refer to in all the paragraphs above.
I'm programming in VB using Visual Studio 2005 Professional. I have a code munger perl script that generates some of the *.vb files that I want to compile. The script and the associated files are in my project directory, and when I run the script from the OS command prompt, it writes the files in the same directory, which is what I want. Rather than do this, I want to invoke the perl script as a pre-build event. I've gotten it to work ... almost. The only issue now is that the files are now deposited in TargetDir (/bin/Release e.g.) instead of ProjectDir. I could just change TargetDir to be ProjectDir, but that seems like I'm asking for trouble. Is there a way to separately specify the target directory for pre-build commands? Or change it to ProjectDir, then change it back after I'm done with the pre-build?

I am using 2008 Express Edition. I am trying to make a Release build instead of a Debug build.Under Tools->Options, Projects and Solutions->General - I checked Show advanced build configurations. The option to switch configurations does not show up in the IDE.
After this, I went to the Project Properties->Compile and switched the Configuration from Active(Debug) to Release. After building, I looked in my project directory, however only in the Debug sub-directory was the .exe and nothing in the Release sub-directory.I have used Visual C++ Express Edition, where I noticed that if you do not change to Release in the IDE than after changing to Release in properties, resets the project to the last configuration setting which is usually Debug.how to make the Debug/Release box available in the IDE, since Tools/Options does not make it show up?
I just created a simple application. I Builded that using build->build myapp. I got .exe of that application. i runned. all went fine. but when i closed that app, even after closing it is in memory. it is still running. how to deploy it properly?
View 12 Repliesrecently i have been working on a desktop project, and i made couple of changes to the project, one of them was changing the build action for the App.config to "Embedded Resource" by mistake! after that i built the application and no compile errors were shown, so i tried to run it but the following run time error showed up:
{"An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The URL cannot be empty. Parameter name: url"}
but it did not specify more information about the exact cause or the exact error place. so it will leave you in a miss!
for awhile, i did not know what was the cause of this due to the numerous changes i did, so i started to review my latest changes one by one till i discovered that changing the build action for the App.config file was the reason for this error.
Actually, I've been able to add the project, but I don't know how to execute the load command (Form1_Load) from the original solution to the added project. Additionally, there is a .DLL file that is needed to run the new project

As far as I know , it is possible to combine projects into a solution . So , lets say we have 3 projects . Each project has a starting form , lets call them SF1 , SF2 and SF3 .What I would like to ask you is how can I write code in order to have both the solution and the partial projects , working . You see , the solution (which as far as I know will also be accompanied by a new project) has to have a starting form ; lets call it SF0 .A) First of all I'd like to know how can I call a partial project from the solution itself .B) What code do I have to write in the partial projects in order to keep them running correctly when they are separate (that is not part of the solution) . I am asking this question too , because as I guess , there has to be code in SF1 , SF2 and SF3 (into buttons) that lead back to SF0 , but

View 2 RepliesI want to display some text for a user - blocks of text about "vendors" - that can be scrolled.
I might want the first vendor to be a different color - or be bold.
I might want certain fields in the "text blurb" about each vendor to be bold - or underlined - or a different color.
In VB6 I would have used a RTB - would that still be the solution??
I've been doing some lite coding over the last couple years so I'm no where near where a lot of you already are. So my code tends to be organized in the standard beginners format... one project per solution with one executable (*.dll or *.exe). So I have a bit of a "best-practices" question for you... Why use multiple projects in one solution?

In the Solution Explorer window, is it possible to change the highlight color of selected items *when the form does not have focus*?For example, selecting a module in the Solution Explorer highlights that module's name in Blue, then when the focus is lost by moving to another window in the IDE, that blue highlight becomes a very, very light gray (on some LCD monitors in particular). I'd like to make that light gray a bit easier to see.Is this possible? I'm running VS2008 SP1 on Vista 64.
View 2 RepliesSome of my students end up with a different icon in the Solution Explorer when they create applications. An example is the attached Exam.vb icon, which includes a little arrow into the normal Form icon (see pic) . I am guessing it means it is linked some how. When the application is zipped and submitted, an error is thrown when I unzip it to grade it which indicates that the file in not part of the project, and it references the absolute address on the original application.Any idea what caused this and how can I instruct the students to avoid it in the future?
View 5 RepliesIt must be to close to the weekend, but I thought I read at some time an article of an easy way to have a common settings file for both application and user settings across a solution.
I currently have a Solution that contains 4 projects. Each of these projects need to access the same set of settings and be able to update the user settings. Is there a way to do this utilizing the My.Settings functionality?
Just got a little quirk with VS2008 on 1 solution. When i press F5 to debug my solution builds the current project but then insists on building all my setup projects...
This only occurs on 1 of my solutions and it has 20 projects within it.
I've checked startup projects and it has no dependancies and is set to selected project.
EDIT: Right click and debug in new instance works fine
I have a Form with a Media Player in it. Which plays a Song.

It's playing in the background since the Form is hidden. When I play itin Debug, everything works fine. When I run the app outside Debug, I get this error: [URL] The Music File is there, but strangely, there comes this weird error.
I would like to group the elements in the Solution Explorer (Forms , Modules etc) .Is this possible in the VB .NET Editor ?

View 9 RepliesI have a vb.net 2008 windows form application that I was just assigned to work on. how to maintain and test changes to both the pre build and the post build events? Can you tell me how to test these events? My postbuild event, I believe calls a project file in the solution file that wraps files together in a bundle in debug mode. Can you tell me how the posbuild event works and when it is called?
