VS 2008 Directory.GetFiles - Access Denied
Aug 18, 2010
In the code below I got a UnauthorizedAccessException unhandled, access is denied to the directory
'c:WindowsSystem32LogFilesWMIRtBackup'.
A first chance exception of type
'System.UnauthorizedAccessException'
occurred in mscorlib.dll.
How can I make the search only in allowed access directory's???
Dim searchResults As String() = Directory.GetFiles("c:", "*.idw", SearchOption.AllDirectories)
For Each result As String In searchResults
MessageBox.Show(result)

I'm fiddling around with a small program that can delete a directory, including its sub-folders and files.This is the code I'm using: (Note-I found it on the net, I didn't code it myself)
Private Sub filedelete(ByVal filename As String)
Dim filesystemobject As Object
filesystemobject = CreateObject("Scripting.filesystemobject")[code]..........
So on click of button '2' the folders are cleaned out, and on click of button '3' they are deleted - it works great.Now the problem is, if any of the folders in the directory 'test' are not accessible to the current user, the program throws the exception 'Access to the path is denied.Is it possible to skip folders that are not accessible, and just ignore them, and delete the ones that are accessible?What code needs to be added to enable this ability?

I'm running in to a problem and all the google searching for the past 3 hours haven't solved it.I'm using Visual Studio 2008 on a Windows 7 Enterprise x64 OS.Programs Intended Use: This will be a pre-deployment assessment program, to be run by the end-user to calculate difficulty of the deployment(setting up of new computer) to see if we can send a student or send a full time staff.It will grab the username, computername, os, etc which are all already working. I want it to grab the size of the user profile (C:Users%Username of currently logged in person). This is where I'm having difficulty.The function works fine on the desktop folder, but on mydocs it comes up with access denied errors, as well as "LocalApplication Data" being access denied.[code]

I am currently using the below code to upload a file and display progress. It works fine except there are a few things I would like to do differently.
I am using the main FTP account for my website which has access to all of my files. I set up a different FTP login to use that only has access to a specific folder, but when I try to use it I get: Error 550 No such file or directory or access denied.
This FTP account allows access to: mywebsite.com/upload/users/ only If strFTPAddress = mywebsite.com/upload/users/ I get error 550, I've tried a few other things too and it's told me that it's an invalid URI
Basically what I want to know is if and how I might be able to connect using my second FTP account so that I only have access to the upload/users/ directory.

So i have this code that will rename one of the folder:
FileIO.FileSystem.RenameDirectory("C:Program FilesYahoo!", "Yahoo!1")
but when I run the code..it say's: IOException was Unhandled
Access to the path 'C:Program FilesYahoo!' is denied.
I think the OS is the cause of the problem. because in Windows 7 it asks for permission to change the name.
How could i make the program to continue renaming when the log in user is administrator.

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

I can't figure out how to use the (because im noob)ystem.io.directory.getfilesIf I try to put it in a textbox for example textbox1.text = system.io.directory.getfiles("my directory") then I just get the error message "Value type of '1-dimensional string of array' cannot be converted to 'string'. First of all I have no idea what the '1-dimensional string of array'thing is.And if I try to put in a msgbox for example sgbox(system.io.directory.getfiles("my directory")) then I can run the program but when I click my button then it says "it can not convert argument prompt to string(google translated)". And second, I don't know what the prompt thing is either

I am wondering if there is a simple method to filter the result returned by Directory.GetFiles(). Basically I am looking to retrive all of the jpg files in a selected folder into an array. My current code works fine if the folder only has jpgs in it which should be the case in operation but I would like to make sure it works correctly when the folder contains other types of files as well. The line I am currently using is..
Code:
files = Directory.GetFiles(IMAGE_DIRECTORY) files is defined as an array earlier in the program and as I mentioned my program works fine when the folder has nothing but jpegs within. The problem is that I am creating a listview with thumbnails from these files and run into some indexing issues when there are non jpgs in the target folder. The easiest solution would seem to be a filter on the getfiles method that would return only files witht he given extension.
Anyone know how to do this or will I need to parse the files out of the array in a second process?

I'm trying to load the most recent file from a directory, but my following code doesn't work. Am i getting something obvious terribly wrong?!
Dim myFile = Directory.GetFiles("C:UsersJoeDesktopXML Logs").OrderByDescending(Function(f) f.LastWriteTime).First()
I get two error messages:
Data type(s) of the type parameter(s) in extension method 'Public Function OrderByDescending(Of TKey)(keySelector As System.Func(Of String, TKey)) As System.Linq.IOrderedEnumerable(Of String)' defined in 'System.Linq.Enumerable' cannot be inferred from these arguments. Specifying the data type(s) explicitly might correct this error.
And:
'LastWriteTime' is not a member of 'String'.

This is the code I have set up to scan a directory of files:
Dim fileArray() As String
fileArray = Directory.GetFiles(System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory & "help")
And it successfully gets all files in the directory, but it gets their absolute paths as well. For example, one of the entries in fileArray() is:
F:ProjectProjectinx86Debughelpook_troubleshoot.html
And I want it to just be:
book_troubleshoot.html
Is there a way to do this without parsing through all the array entries to trim off the path?

When I have a directory setup with a subdirectory and both the top directory and sub directory have files in them I get a list of all the files with no directory info. That's OK, but I need to restore them to another location with the same directory structure in place. I'm essentially copying all files in a directory and it's subs to another location. The problem is the sub directory info is not in the files list so everything goes into the main directory. How do I get around this or can I? Here is what I'm using now.
I have a directory, NewProg in Program Files and a sub directory under it called Sub.
files=dir.getfiles("C:Program FilesNewProg",searchoption.alldirectories)
My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile("C:Program FilesNewProg" & File.Name, "C:NewProg" & File.Name,True)The Sub directory is not created and even when it is there, it always comes up empty with all it's files copied into the main NewProg.

I have a directory 'C:Test' with three files in it:
A23456789.txt
A1.txt
G 5.txt
And I run this command:
Dim FileArr = Directory.GetFiles("C:Test", "*1.txt", SearchOption.AllDirectories)
All three files are returned.I understand that this is by design and .NET searches the 8.3 short file names as well.But is there any way to override this and search the actual file names only?Surely, in this day and age there must be a function to do this. Or do I have to write my own?I would like the search function to have the same behavior as the Windows Explorer for consistency.

I am trying to write some code to read the application pools from a remote machine and then eventually I will want to recycle one of the pools. I am trying to use the following code to retrieve the application pools, however I am getting an Access Denied error on the For Each line. There is no inner exception, so that is all I have to work with.
Dim connection As New ConnectionOptions
connection.Username = "administrator"
connection.Password = "password"
[code]....
The account I am trying with right now is the box administrator account.The machine is not part of a domain and it is windows 2003 server with the firewall off.I know the username and password are correct, because if they are not I get an error on the Scope.Connect() line.I even rebooted after that change, just to be sure, but still no luck.

For the past 3 months I have been working on two separate apps. Initialy I started out with Win Vista and things were going great except for how slow my comp was running. So I reinstalled the Vista OS. Everything was going great until Mar 7th when this error just started occuring within my code.
"Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareTornadoAppsSwift BudgetUser' is denied"
"TornadoApps/Swift" Budget are strings created upon App install or first run of App in VB 2008.The "Use"r value along with 9 other values were all working fine prior to Mar 7th.Now this line along with many others like it with defferent strings and values were working just fine till this week. So i figured that I'd just upgrade to Win7 hoping that would fix it. IT didn't. So I reformatted and installed fresh Win7 and still have the error. So I have figured out that it isn't my OS. Cuase it was working in Vista then just quit working.

I made a 30 day trail for my app. When the trail runs for the first time it makes a file by the name of for example C:WindowsSystem32 raildays.txt
In the traildays.txt is the number of days that have passed.
Any was it is a very important file with out it the trail would all was say that you have 30 days before the trail ends. But when i run the program i get this access to file C:WindowsSystem3 raildays.txt is denied. So the file is not created and then the program crashers.
But when i change the Change User Account Control Settings Crap to never notify it works.

I am having a problem. The IO.Directory.GetFiles code is resulting in error do to the fact that it is trying to access the Temp folder in the Windows folder on drive C:. Apparently that folder is restricted... When the code encounters that folder the code stops retrieving files. Is there a way around this? Is there somewhere i can give my program administrator access? If not then am i able to skip the files in that location?
