I am working on a project in which the user can play another user on over the internet. Basically, how would i go about this?
What type of server would i need? Would i just use a designated computer as a server?
Also, what is the general process in contacting a server, reading/ writing from/to a server and storing data onto a server?
I have this code, to read image (saved as varbinary(max) in database):

But it isn't very convenient code. It reads bytes from table, save them to file, and finally open file as image.How can I read it directly to image, without saving as file?
What is the best practice if need to read/open file that is located on a different server?How to do this? I know opening a local file is easy, but what to do if the file's on a different server?
View 1 RepliesI am writing an application that will call a SQL Server job on all our client's systems. I'm able to execute it, and wait until it's finished. It has an output file that's save location is hard coded into the job however, and this is not the same location on all client's.
Since the job is identical on systems minus this one value, I want my code to read in the script of the job and parse out the location.I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the actual text of the job itself.
Is this possible in .NET? If so, how?

I am writing an application to grab attachments from messages in a particular folder in an Exchange server account and then process them. The processing of the attachments should be no problem, but what I don't know how to do is to connect to the Exchange server and access the messages.
What I would like to know is what references and imports I need, and how to access the various objects in the object model. I have been looking at CDO already, but I have had problems finding help on the Internet that is relevant to VB.NET.
For example, I'd like to know how to create the Exchange object, log in and navigate to the folder that has the relevant messages in it.

i'm tying to send email in my application directly by the smtp server but the server doesn't allow me to do that.The application its used by everyone in the company, so i set the smtp client UseDefaultCredentials to True, but the server replies with this when i try to send an email:[code].....If i set the credentials by hand, the server sends the email. So my problem is how to make this work to everyone? I don't want to have one public/friend var all time in the application with the credentials of the current user?

I have developed a VB.NET program using a strongly typed dataset. This dataset has its connection to a SQL Server 2008 R2. The software should now be additionally used offline. The database should be exported to a *.sdf database. If no connection to the SQL server is produced, the software have to try to connect to the *.sdf database.I would like to achieve:
1. Export the data in the SQL Server 2008 R2 database to a local *.sdf file.
2. This *.sdf file has to work as an alternate connection string in the strongly typed dataset.

We are currently using Access 97 as our database. This resides on the remote farm server (which is a Windows 2008 R2 server). We are using a front end vb6 exe which accesses the back end data.Occasionally we are getting corruption to our database and we have to make sure everyone exits the software to allow us to repair/compact it. There are 2 physical servers, each running 2 virtual machines. When the user logs onto the farm using RDP, they go to one of these 4 virtual machines.We are getting all kinds of corruption, some where # characters have been inserted into the top of one table, some where the indexes are corrupted, and some where access needs to repair the database.
View 1 RepliesWe recently upgraded our job server to Windows Server 2008. We have jobs we run manually in a folder (c:Custom Programs). Some programs are console programs others are have a gui. This one program has a gui.It also has a progress bar that shows the progress of the job when you click the go button. Of course it spawns a thread to do the processing. This thread creates a log file to write errors and other things too.
The problem is when the program goes to create the log file an access not authorized error is thrown. I checked the permission on the folder. All users are allowed to create/edit/append/execute. Pretty much everything except take ownership. Also, there's nothing that denies anything. So I see no reason why this isn't working. We can get this to work by using the run as administrator option when we first run the program. However, we don't view this as unacceptable solution. My only thought is the spawned thread isn't getting the same permission set as the program. Am I correct or does something think it's something else.

how to create a client/server... But I couldn't... I don't want anything fancy. Just want the client to send the server 4 numbers, depending on the user's choice; after that, the server would turn off the pc, restart it, etc. It all depends on the number received. Is there a rather "simple" way to do it? If it's not to much trouble you could use Atheist's example. (Btw I don't understand the code and, yes, I've checked on [URL])
View 9 RepliesHave some written code that enables me to log RPM from a drum, that I then convert to speed (KmH).Everything works fine so far.My current delima is trying to figure out how to read the RPM "changes" per timer interval.For example if I have at any given time a reading of ,let's say for simplicity,2000 RPM,and after the next timer interval it's 3000 RPM.I then have a change of 1000 RPM in that given interval.I need to have a way to determin this change store it into a textbox or combo box or something so I can work with it.As of now there are 2 Timers running.T1 is for the counting interval and T2 is for holding the count till the new count comes around.I had tried to add a 3rd timer to count the change but got rid of it because it did'nt seem to work.

I am building an app to read a customers .xls file in to a array list the array is the being reordered and im writing a file out the back end.its doing several lookups in the .xls file to see if relivant data is there and it writes a different file (9 different specs) depending what is in each line/column.Sound simple and I have the app working great however when I use a customers live data I get an ex.message = "Could not decrypt file" the file opens in excel witthout any password prompts however it does look like the sheet is write protected but all im doing in my app is reading the data.
