VS 2008 Serialization Over Streams "nasty Stack Trace"

Mar 22, 2010

I have a client sending data to a server using a Serialized Structure. I get a rather...nasty stack trace message that I can't begin to figure out why it's doing what it is. Here's that Stack Trace:

2005 How To Log The Stack Trace

My problem is that i need log the stack call. I know that i can put a breakpoint in code and choose the debug menu option "call stack", But that is not a solution for me, because i need all the methods called by the application, not only the last until the breakpoint.

Can't Get Stack Trace From OjbectDisposedException

Jan 7, 2009

We have this funky little ObjectDisposedException happening now and again. But only on production machines, of course ... can't recreate the issue on my dev unit. So I trotted on out to the Microsoft site to see what members of this exception I could use to figure out what's going on. Microsoft says that one of the members is StackTrace. I double and triple checked that I'm looking at .Net 1.1 information as I'm pretty sure that's what I'm using (how can I check that?). Here's the page I found - [URL]

So I go back to my program to write something useful to the event log so I can figure out what's going on. And when I look at the members of the ObjectDisposedException available to me I only see the following: GetBaseException, GetType, InnerException, Message, ObjectName, ToString.

what happened to my StackTrace member? I sure could use it if I could figure out how to get to it.

How To Get A Stack Trace In .NET In Normal Execution?

Jul 15, 2010

In VB .NET, I know I can get a stack trace by looking at the value of ex.StackTrace when handling an exception. How can I get the functions on the stack when I am not handling an exception? I am looking to implement a logging system of some sort to record the steps the user takes prior to a crash to assist in debugging.

Getting Stack Trace Information From A Dynamically Loaded?

Oct 26, 2009

My goal here is to get stack trace information from a dynamically loaded assembly. If the dynamically loaded assembly just throws the error back to the caller, the stack trace information doesn't tell you the location in the dynamic assembly where the error occurred. If I throw my own exception, passing in the original exception, it will get added as an inner exception and will have the information need. I'm trying to avoid changing all my dynamic assemblies to throw new exceptions.

Find Exception Stack Trace Outside Of Visual Studio?

Mar 11, 2010

I have my .net app running on my home machine, and at one point it threw an exception.Problem is, Windows doesn't tell me what the exception is, just says that it stopped responding and closed it.I want to find the exception and stack trace so I can debug it, since I can't to reproduce the problem inside visual studio. The machine is running Windows 7 x64. I found in the event viewer some minor information:

Problem signature:
P1: server info.exe
P2: 1.4.0.0

[code].....

So based on that I can see there was a null reference. I remember way back when I was on XP, when the application crashed it would show the whole exception stack. Can I find that information somewhere?

Throw An Existing Exception While Preserving Its Stack Trace In VB?

Nov 18, 2011

If I have an existing exception object (I'm not in a catch block, I just happen to have been given an exception object), is there any way (re)throw it while preserving it's stack trace?

The context for asking is that I'm writing a RunWorkerCompleted handler. If an error happened while running the background task, then this will have shown up in the Error property of the RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs. To keep the code simple I want to use the same error handling code to trap this, or any error that happens later during the handler. That means I need code like this:

Private Sub OnDone(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs)

[Code]...

I don't think that using an InnerException here (ie. saying something like Throw new Exception(ex)) will work because then I have the problem that my Catch block has no way of knowing whether the exception it's supposed to be handling is the outer one or an inner one. StackOverflow seems to have various similar questions, but I've not found anything that describes this particular situation.

VS 2010 More Extensive Error Logging "stack Trace"?

Dec 16, 2011

I created a class that I use for error logging. I have one method that accepts a parameter as an exception. With that exception, I created the error log and I write the message as well as the stack trace. With this, I'm finding that I'm not always getting detailed information. Usually, the stack trace shows me line number in which the error occurs, which allows me to pinpoint the issue.

Trace Route In Vb 2008 Express

Dec 9, 2009

im looking to do a trace route to an ip (specified in a text box) and have the results displayed in a textbox. I know that this has been brought up in the forums before but im yet to find a version thats compatible with vb 2008 express edition. The vb.netmvps example is exactly the functionality im looking for but it throws up 80 +errors(*** is no longer supported etc)[URL]the host resolution isnt an issue becasue i already have the list of ip's and corresponding host names that i would be tracing in a db.

does anyone have a tracert app that is compatible with this version of vb or indeed know where i could find one ?

VS 2008 Simple Serialization Anyone?

Aug 19, 2009

I am making a FlowLayoutControl panel which the user can edit by dragging controls onto it in any required order. The controls are mainly (subclassed) Buttons and (subclassed) TextBoxes, plus perhaps a few labels. There might easily be several hundred of them interspersed at random. I need to be able to save the FlowLayoutPanel and/or its list of controls to a file, and then restore the whole thing again later when needed. If I am not mistaken, this will involve serialization -- a subject about which I presently know next to nothing. I have tried trawling the web for introductions and relevant examples, but I am suffering from information overload. There is so much written about serialization that I don't know where to start. As I can't spend too much time on this, I'm hoping there is some simple way through all the complications. Can anyone here explain, or point me to, the basics needed for saving a control like my one?

VS 2008 When Is StreamWriter / BinaryWriter / Serialization Most Useful?

VS 2008 - Session Serialization And BindingList (Of Items)

Jan 28, 2010

I have created a huge monster based on generic objects and the BindingList. It is a web app that has users, security rights and restrictions, as well as the business logic to persist to the database. I have been using inProc sessions but each user creates about 50 megs of memory. I was initially told that would not be a problem, that a few users it at any time, and the items in the collections were supposed to be lot smaller, but I digress. For the amount of processing that the app has to do in real time, and for how it manages the data, the data it produces is 100%.

The speed and performance has been superior, but the only problem was it was on a box that was used for alot of other applications and it would run out of memory. I have since put it on Server 08 and have placed the Serializable attribute on all classes. I get a an error how ever when the web app tries to serialize the session. I get the feeling that there is an unsaid concensus that inheriting from BindingList is not supported by .net sql or state server session handling.

Asmx Json Serialization Versus Wcf Json Serialization?

Nov 24, 2011

I have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application. The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service. For example, the same method behaves differently in each:

' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary

.net - Overlays Using Streams Resizes An Image?

Dec 28, 2009

I found that the overlay function was working fine. However, it seems that if I use the overlay function while reading an image from a stream, that it would enlarge the picture before overlaying it.

ie:

overlay = New Bitmap(stream)
g.DrawImage(overlay, 0, 0)

Seems to enlarge the image before overlaying it, whereas this:

overlay = New Bitmap(My.Resources.Pic)
g.DrawImage(overlay, 0, 0)

Seems to overlay the image fine.

What could be the reason for this?

Feeding A Listbox With A Stream - New To Streams From VB6?

Dec 20, 2011

I am new to .NET from VB6. So I do not have any background with streams, however the concept seems straight forward. I am trying to populate a listbox using the ADD method with the data originating in a text file. Using a stream reader I am aquiring the data (I can prove that the data is there at every itteration using the debugging tools). However, it doesn't make it into the listbox. I have other data appear withn the listbox in a couple of different ways just to prove that there is nothing wrong with the way the listbox is setup or coded. The listbox is a single instance item on a form, all setup is done through the properties window.

Consume A StreamReader Stream .NET From A Web Request As It Streams?

Nov 12, 2011

I experimenting with the Twitter streaming api, an am trying to open a stream for a user to consume events as they happen. I using a standard set of classes for making REST api calls to twitter. When using url... in a "GET" call the response stream never ends.I'm opening a StreamReader and reading the response as I would with any other REST call to Twitter. This is probably obvious to others, but how do I "consume" this stream... Is there a way to read the StreamReader as it's reading (meaning before it closes)? or maybe there a different method I can user to consume this stream.... again, I apologize if this seams to be elementary to some, but I can't figure it out at the moment. Here is the original source I started troubleshooting this with. This method was fabricated from a set of C# Classes I found in a forum on LinkedIn. At the line that reads "responseData = responseReader.ReadToEnd()" the method starts to "drink" the stream... but do so like a bottomless cup... reading this stream of data in real time before it closes (which is essentially until I stop debugging or kill the process) is the question I'm tackling.[code]

This write the opened twitter stream to the file, and every time I Tweet, Retweet, Delete, Direct Message... and so on.The file grows with a JSON object appended to the text. I used the Do While 0 < 1 for testing here, because I just wanted to see it working. I see on MSDN StreamReader Constructor Description that the New constructor is supposed to accept a Boolean value for "leaveOpen", but no such argument allowed when I try to add this to the constructor.Does anyone have a good example of how to do this with forcing and infinite loop or just a better approach than this... I would like to simply read new updates sent each time from Twitter, and address them accordingly? There is obviously a way, I'm just new to the concept of consuming a stream like this with out it being closed.
