VS 2008 - Session Serialization And BindingList (Of Items)
Jan 28, 2010
I have created a huge monster based on generic objects and the BindingList. It is a web app that has users, security rights and restrictions, as well as the business logic to persist to the database. I have been using inProc sessions but each user creates about 50 megs of memory. I was initially told that would not be a problem, that a few users it at any time, and the items in the collections were supposed to be lot smaller, but I digress. For the amount of processing that the app has to do in real time, and for how it manages the data, the data it produces is 100%.
The speed and performance has been superior, but the only problem was it was on a box that was used for alot of other applications and it would run out of memory. I have since put it on Server 08 and have placed the Serializable attribute on all classes. I get a an error how ever when the web app tries to serialize the session. I get the feeling that there is an unsaid concensus that inheriting from BindingList is not supported by .net sql or state server session handling.

I have set up a class to hold song information - artist, title. I then created another class that containg a BindingList(of clsSong). I use this binding list to create a data object that can be used to create an RDLC report. This all works. Now I am trying to remove duplicates from the binding list so they don't show up twice on the report. I can't figure out how to get a distinct list for my report. [code]...

I am making a FlowLayoutControl panel which the user can edit by dragging controls onto it in any required order. The controls are mainly (subclassed) Buttons and (subclassed) TextBoxes, plus perhaps a few labels. There might easily be several hundred of them interspersed at random. I need to be able to save the FlowLayoutPanel and/or its list of controls to a file, and then restore the whole thing again later when needed.If I am not mistaken, this will involve serialization -- a subject about which I presently know next to nothing. I have tried trawling the web for introductions and relevant examples, but I am suffering from information overload. There is so much written about serialization that I don't know where to start.As I can't spend too much time on this, I'm hoping there is some simple way through all the complications. Can anyone here explain, or point me to, the basics needed for saving a control like my one?

Okay, this actually relates to some work I'm doing that I already have something in place. So if a change is necessary down the road, I'm in no hurry... But I did a dangerous thing and began reading. As I began reading about ways to stream file data, I became curious as to when it is a good idea to one method or the other.

I am storing a session variable that a user types into a textbox. With their valid input, their session gets created and they get a little more functionality than the regular end users of the site.I was wondering if it is possible to find a way to add someone's session variable to the end of a URL. This way we can email a link to one of our clients, they click it, and their session has automatically begun. They already have the textbox to enter their code into, but I was told that it would be much easier for the users to just click a link that will start their session.

I used the ideas from this post to create a custom collection of my custom class, so that I would be able to easily sort my collection. My project uses binary serialization to save everything (well the important stuff anyway) to a file. The problem is that my custom collection now breaks the serialization.I can't seem to figure out how to get the custom collection to serialize![code]

I am trying to write a function that has an object parameter. That object will always be an BindingList. That BindingList will be of some unknown (at design Time) class. I think I've figured out how to get the type of the collection object, but now here the tricky part. I'm trying to create a function that can handle any type of collection and be able to return an item from that collection. I need to create a new object of that type and return it from the function. I have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application.The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service.For example, the same method behaves differently in each:
' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary

I have the following code on a form:
Public Sub Init(ByVal SelectedItems As List(Of Cheque))
Items = New BindingList(Of Cheque)(SelectedItems )
BindingSource1.DataSource = Items
[code]....
This code gets called like so:
...
fmEdit.Init(myList)
fmEdit.Show()
All variables are populated etc, it seems to go through the DataBindings.Add ok but when the form appears I get the error about unable to bind to a property or column called Id. I tried replacing the DataBindings.Add code to use the BindingSource1 instead of Items but I get a similar error.The names of the properties in the class match that of the name in the Databindings.Add code.
UPDATE: Here is my class:
Public Class Cheque
Public Id As String
Public Status As Byte

I have an issue with the System.Net.Mail.SMTPClient class - when it sends an email via the Send method it does not seem to send the QUIT command after sending the email so the connection stays open indefinitely (or until the SMTPClient instance is disposed of by the garbage collector) as far as I can tell.I thought oh well I must just need to call Close or Dispose on it but neither of those methods exist This is very basic, standard SMTP server usage - every server should send QUIT after it is done sending the other commands used to transfer the email, otherwise the remote server keeps the session open (and some servers have a limit on how many sessions can be open at a time or how many emails can be sent per session) so this could cause some serious problems.
Am I being daft or does there seem to be no way to make it do what pretty much every other SMTP client in the world does? I found a Microsoft Connect topic that had been created about this but it was 4 years old and the response from MS was that they would probably include something in the next version of the framework... which is what we are now on

I have the following linq statement to go through a dropdown menu's sub items and get what items are checked: vb Dim UnselectedItems = From xItem As ToolStripMenuItem In tsiSelectObjects.DropDownItems Where TypeOf xItem Is ToolStripMenuItem AndAlso CType(xItem, ToolStripMenuItem).Checked = False
I get this error tho: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Windows.Forms.ToolStripSeparator' to type 'System.Windows.Forms.ToolStripMenuItem'. As you can probably guess i have ToolStripMenuItems and separators in there
However the AndAlso should short circuit in the case where the item is not a ToolStripMenuItem and it doesn't seem to be doing so (as TypeOf xItem Is ToolStripMenuItem=false in this case)?

I know how to do what is in the subject already, but I want to do it a different way than what is stated in the subject. What I want to do is be able to create multiple items with different names and then load the names into a listbox. When I select the item in the listbox with the name, such as Item1, it will put the text from the control named Item1 into a textbox.
I am clueless as to how I could accomplish this. What I am doing is adding Items to a menustrip's dropdown Item, then adding items to the dropdown items. So I would have the item collection such as:
One
Two
Three
So I could choose the item in the listbox with the text "Three" and I could load several properties of the item Three. Such as Three.text, Three.Tag, and Three.Name. And I could also edit these. And then when Three is chosen in the listbox, I could add sub items to it.
So it would look like this in my perspective(Although the code would not work)
Dim tsmBookmarks_SubItem As New ToolStripMenuItem
(Listbox1.selecteditem).DropDownItems.Add(tsmBookmarks_SubItem)
how to convert string to a control name?

Why is XMLSession.FileList.Count always 0. I hypothesize it has something to do with the declaration above it but I am not sure what is wrong with it. Maybe it can't accept a path, if not, how can I do it?

I've been serialising and deserialising .net objects using the XmlSerializer class without problem, however we now need somebody else to look at that data to perform some analysis on it.In order to help with that we've produced an XSD based on our class like so:
xsd.exe /t:DataClass Assembly.exe
The start of the XSD looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<xs:schema elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<xs:element name="DataClass" nillable="true" type="DataClass" />[code].....
Bizarly, the XML produced does not adhere to the XSD generated from the same class.My question then is, is there a way of telling the XmlSerializer to serialize the object based on a given XSD? As an aside, I've looked at other ways of fixing this: I've tried re-generating the classes from the generated XSD - this seemed to have the same problem.
