VS 2008 Table 2 Contains A StoreId Field As A Primary Key?

Mar 8, 2010

Ok i have 3 tables in a dataset

Table1 contains items for sale (referenced)
Table2 contains Stores (Parent)
Table3 Contains items in a particular store (Child)

the problem is the data in this case. Table 2 contains a StoreId field as a primary key. Table1 Contains an ItemId field. My problem is in table 3 this contains 3 fields, StoreId, Name and Quantity.

Now my Table1 contains a field called Name and one called PluralName, I need to determine which field in table one relates to the Name field in table3.

The following 2 constraints exist currently in my app

Table2 - StoreId (one) to Table3 - StoreId (many)
Table1 - Name (one) to Table3 - Name (one)

can i add another constraint :- Table1 - PluralName (one) to Table3 - Name (one) ???

I am presuming if i do i will get a constraint error as the property does not relate on a one to one level if the store has more than one item in stock and vice versa when it has only one in stock.

VS 2008 Table HAVE To Have A Primary Key?

Aug 3, 2009

I have an access database with 4 tables and two of the tables have absolutely no need for a unique field that would be a primary key. One will only have one record and the other is a detail table for two master tables. I of course get an error like "UpdateCommand is not supported against a SelectCommand that does not return any key column information." when I try to save. Do I have to just create a primary field key I don't need or is there a work around for this?

VS 2008 : Characteristics Of Primary Key In The Table?

VS 02/03 Primary Key Field In The Form

Jul 13, 2009

I am using VB Dot Net 2003, Frame Work Version 1.0. The backend is SQL 2000. In the Backend, there is a table with a Primary Key Column. I created a Windows Application using Dot Net. I added a form using the Wizard, connected to the SQL server, selected the said table. The dot net created the form, data connection, data adapter, data set, many fields (as many columns in the table), and the buttons Add, Update, Delete, Load, Cancel and Cancell All. I ran the form and it worked properly when I hit the Load Button. It retrieved the data from the backend. I unloaded the form and re-run the form. This time, I clicked on Add. The Primary Key field was filled with the value 0. I entered the other values and saved the form. It saved the data. In the backend the PK field (as it had the Auto-seed) was filled with a relevant data. But, the front end was not correspondingly updated.

I checked the Update Command / Insert Command of the data adapter. They use the Select statement at the end with a @@Identity in the Where Clause.

VS 2008 Getting Field Values From A Table Using A Foreign Key?

Jul 13, 2011

For simplicity, I have a database with two tables, as follows:

/---------------------------------------
| Table Name: GRADES |
|---------------+---------+-------------|
| Column | Type | Comments |
|---------------|---------|-------------|

[code]....

On my form, I'm trying to display information about a grade. I'm using a DataSet with BindingSources and TableAdapters. Using the tip from here, I'm populating the selected grade's ID, HazardType_ID and Code. Unfortunately, I want to display the the HazardType, and not the foreign key index. I've accomplished this with the following

' get the data
Dim data As ProjectDataSet.GradesRow = DirectCast(GradesBindingSource.Current, DataRowView).Row
' fill in form fields

[code]....

Note, I'm using VB Express 2008 (.NET 3.5) and connecting to a MS Access database.

My client wants that my table be filtered based on the values from a field regardless of its order.

Example: I want to search for a student whose surname is 'Thomas' but the keyword is not the first in the field. The 'Surname' field, instead, contains the value "Ian Thomas".

If I am going to use this code;

bindingsource.filter = "surname Like '" & textbox1.text & "'"

It will base the searching on the first characters of the field only.

Primary Key Not Populating In Child Table?

Jun 10, 2011

I'm having some problems trying to input records into a relational database. The design is really simple but I'm running into a wall when it comes to having the foreign key from my child table autopopulate the primary key from the parent table. I've made the connections in Access and from what I understood, so long as I committed a transaction, the child table would populate the primary key from the parent table. This is not happening.

my question is: is there a method that would do what I'm looking for? or am I cornered into using @@IDENTITY and manually inserting the primary key into the child table?

I've tried using datasets and data adapters and created a datarelation within the dataset, but it is still not doing what I need. everything I've tried thus far has allowed me to insert records into multiple tables, but won't relate them because of the missing primary key in the child table.

Transferring Data From One Field In A Table In A Database To Another Field In A Different Table But Same Database In .NET?

Jul 22, 2010

I am creating a database in VB.NET for a movie rental place. I currently have three forms;

Member Information
DVD Information
Borrow DVDs

What I would like to do is when I am viewing a member's details, if I click a button 'Borrow DVD for Member', the member's ID number transfers over to the Borrow DVDs table in the Member ID which also would hold some information from the DVD Information table, but I'm sure if i can figure out how to do this firstly, I will be able to apply the same rule and work it out myself.I have been trying to use a query statement like;

INSERT INTO [Borrow DVDs].[Member ID] [IN goodstuffvideos.mdb]
SELECT [Member Information].[Member ID]
FROM [Member Information]

but that has been coming up with error codes and completely not working.

Borrow DVDs table fields are: Borrow ID, Member ID, DVD ID Number, Hiring Fee, Borrowing Limit?

DVD Information table fields are: DVD ID Number, Title, Rating, Hiring Fee, Borrowing Limit Member?

Information table fields are: Member ID, Family Name, Given Name, Address, Town/Suburb, Postcode?

The error coming up is; Error in INSERT statement. Unable to parse query text.And under that it says The query cannot be represented graphically in the Diagram and Criteria Pane.

Get Primary Key Id Number From Table WITHOUT Making A Second Trip?

Jan 18, 2010

How would i get the primary key id number from a Table WITHOUT making a second trip to the database in LINQ To SQL?

right now, i submit the data to a table, and make another trip to figure out what id was assigned to the new field (in an auto increment id field). I want to do this in LINQ To SQL and not in Raw SQL (I no longer use Raw SQL).

also, seond part of my question is: i am always careful to know the id of a user thats online because i'd rather call their information in various tables using their id as opposed to using a guid or a username, which are all long strings... i do this because i think that SQL Server doing a numeric compare is much (tentative use of the word 'much') more efficient than doing a username (string) or even a guid (very long string) compare.

DB/Reporting :: Master - Detail Data - Overwrite The Primary Field Value In The First Grid And The Detail Records

Jul 13, 2010

I have made several posts on here lately regarding master/detail or parent/child data setups but no one has been able to help. It seems like a subject people don't like to tackle BUT I really need help.

I'm having a real hard with the DataView.RowFilter functionality and it is driving me insane.

For the most part, I have the basic master/detail functionality working. When you select a record in the first grid, it shows the correct data in the second grid. When you enter a record in the first grid, you can enter related data in the second grid. I accomplish this by using a dataview and row filter bound to the 2nd grid. When you change the record in the first grid, the rowfilter for the 2nd grid is restated and reapplied.

The problem arises when I overwrite the primary field value in the first grid and the detail records become orphaned. You would think all I have to do is change the ID in the 2nd grid to match the new ID in the 1st grid but this is where I am having problems. I wrote a loop to change the ID of each record currently loaded in the 2nd grid to match the newly changed ID in the first grid. The code is here:

Code:
Dim I As Integer

For I = AuthorizationGroupsDGV.Rows.Count - 2 To 0 Step -1
AuthorizationGroupsDGV.Rows(I).Cells(0).Value = StrEmployeeID
Next

I have used this code before and it works great. It has to step backwards through the grid because when the ID's are changed, they no longer match the RowFilter criteria and they disappear from the grid. They still exist in the dataset. The problem is, while the code "works" the intended effect does not. Some of the records completely disappear from the dataset and do not reload when I restate the row filter against the new ID number.
