VS 2008 Using Variables / Parameters In Sql Queries?

Sep 20, 2011

I am using Visual Basic 2008 / MYSQL

Basically i have 2 tables in mysql called Data and products

The first sql query i want to do is something like this to scroll through the recordset of products and bring back information;

dbquery.commandtext = "select quantity, sku, condition from products"

But then what i want to do is bring back information from the Data table based on the sku and condition of the first sql?

so it would be something like this

subquery.commandtext = "select lowestprice from data where sku = *SKU FROM FIRST TABLE* and condition = *CONDITIONFROM FIRST TABLE*"

Use SQL Queries With LIKE, @parameters, And % Wildcards?

Feb 22, 2012

I am using a database in Visual Basic 2010 displayed through a DataGridView. Through the DataGridView's "add query" option, I am writing these queries. My goal is to have partial search entries show up (ie if the entry is "Lewis" then it should be among the entries returned if "Le" is in the textbox.)

SELECT * FROM Table WHERE Surname LIKE '%' + @Surname + '%'

I am using the above query and it only returns exact matches despite the LIKE operator. Partial entries never show up despite the presence of the wildcard % symbol. It's as if the whole thing is being treated as an equal sign. What should I do? Is it a problem with the SQL itself or does VB's "add query" maker simply have such limited capabilities?

Using Variables In SQL Queries

May 18, 2009

I am a beginner when it comes to VB express. I went to the FAQ and found what looked like the answer to my question in "Database - How can I put the value of a variable/control into my SQL statement?" which said I should use thecode ...... where Field = ' " & variablename & " ' at the end of the SQL statement

I am using a field defined as a nchar with 10 charecters and my variable is defined as a string. my field has been given the value "abcdefghij" so it is full to avoid confusion with spaces and even though the variable is identical and I have used the len command to check there are no hidden spaces etc. When I run the query I get no records selected. What am I doing wrong?. If I use Where Field = 'abcdefghij', ie specify the value in the SQL I get the correct records selected but this does not give me the flexibility I need

VS 2005 - SQL And / Or Queries From Variables

Feb 12, 2011

I'm in the middle of a project, I've got the bulk of it working but I cannot work out how to get my variables to modify the SQL query properly, I'll try and explain. GUI has 5 search fields Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 & Q5 with 4 checkboxes that denote AND / OR operators that need to be inserted into the query correctly. If they are all set to 'AND' it works fine. However if the user wants 'Q1 AND Q2 OR Q3' then it fails. If I hard code then I just user brackets ie '(Q1 AND Q2) Or Q3'. For some reason I seam incapable of working out the code to achieve this...

Code snippet:
'Check AND OR Checkbox and assign Operator
If Q1AND.Checked = True Then
Q1Op = "AND"
Else : Q1Op = "OR"

Arguments / Parameters And Variables Inside Shared Functions

May 19, 2011

Well I am a new to VB.NET, converting a legacy system to .NET world. Recently I have been reviewing the already existing code since I joined the project quite late in the team. I find that there are many shared functions (not shared class) inside many classes. I doubt this may create some problem if two requests ( i.e two different HTTP request to the same method as it's a WCF application, of course exposed methods are not shared but internally called methods are shared) comes to the same shared method and both the calls to the method may have different method parameters/arguments, overwriting each other's arguments. In short, if shared method has a list of arguments which is going to be processed, is there any chance of inconsistencies in the light of multiple access to the shared method via two http requests.

VS 2008 - Take A String Of Variables With A Common Delimiter And Break It All Back Out Into Separate Variables

As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.

VB2005 Parameter Queries With SQL 2008?

Dec 7, 2009

We have recently updated our SQL Server to 2008 (from 2000). I moved all the data over to the SQL 2008 server by exporting from the 2000 server. All the tables open just fine, and all the data appears to be present. Within the VB.NET app, however, any table reference that uses a parameter generates an error: The data types text and text are incompatible in the equal to operators. The table adapter works just fine with full table previews, but not with either parameters or filter values (i.e., Field1 <> '0'). I should confess that I am new to SQL 2008. What do I need to do to get these parameter queries operational?BTW, I have downloaded and installed the VB2005 plugin that enables working with SQL 2008 (VS80sp1-KB954961-X86-INTL.exe).LDC

VS 2008 Write Database Queries On The Fly?

Jan 29, 2010

Is it possible to create database queries on the fly with VB?

For i = 0 To (UBound(WeekNo) - 1)
For NLoop = 1 To 50
WeekRow(NLoop) = WeekSinceLast(i, NLoop)
Next
Next

I want to write each WeekRow to the database for each week (= i). WeekRow contains 50 elements, each of which needs to be placed in a separate field.

So, can I generate a SQL query that is constructed on the fly? If so, how do I go about it?

VS 2008 Using Parametrized Queries With Multiple SQL Statements

Jun 25, 2009

There is not a VB.net database forum, and there is a HUGE difference (unfortunately) between ADO and ADO.net. I have a connection to a MS SQL database, which I understand is capable of handling multiple SQL statements in one Execution, ie

Using cmdExe As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
sSQL = "Delete * from mytable where UniqueID=123;Insert into mytable (UniqueID, Field) values (123, 'something')"
.CommandText = strSingleSQLLine

[Code]....

There are two questions here actually...can I add the parameters before setting the command text, and do I have to add the same parameter over and over again?

I need to be able to start with Form1, move to LoginForm, then back to Form1 taking 2 variables and the "values" they have in the LoginForm back to Form1 and using the variables. I start with the main form (Form1) and have the user enter some information. Once they click OK I have the LoginForm open. After they enter their credentials I will check to make sure they are legal users, then go back to Form1 (here is where I need to take the Username and Password with me) to log onto a server using the same credentails from the login form.

VS 2008 Bound - Source Data Of Drop Down Lists Be Separate Queries / Datatables?

Jun 2, 2009

I've got a couple of drop down lists for languages. I bind them to a language list that comes from a query. Then the fields are also bound to the row in the DB they relate to. I have several panels with the language drop down - each "tied" to a different table in my DB. When I call up different records on the same panel the drop downs immediately "set to the position" of that rows language in the list. But when I call up another panel - tied to another database table - I see that language in the drop down.

C# - Search For Names In The Database That Matches Whole Parameters Or Any Part Of Parameters

I should be able to get result back as long as there's a match in the parameters. If I use Function Contains (q.FirstName & " " & q.LastName).Contains(employeeName), I will not get any result back if employeeName is "John Clark" Function Contains looks only for next words from left to right. It doesn't match a single word at a time. So that's why I used this in the Linq to SQL:

Recommended Application(s) To Test SQL Server 2008 Queries For Application?

Apr 11, 2012

I am new to working with SQL databases (and databases in general) so I do not have a lot of experience with how queries work and how I can practice them. When I was first learning xml and XPath, I found XPath Visualizer incredibly helpful after someone on stack overflow mentioned it to me.Due to this, I am wondering if a similar tool exists for SQL databases?Basically a tool that will allow me to connect to a database, enter queries and see somehow what the results would be like.

I have looked online a bit, however I have found relatively few options in terms of any utility that would do what I want, and that looks reliable.I will ultimately be writing an application to interact with an SQL 2008 server in vb.net, however for now I am just experimenting so I will know what I am doing when I actually want to create my application. So far I have managed to connect to the database using an OLE DB connection, but I am now looking for a way to experiement with queries without just querying and figuring out a way to interpret the results in my program. Basically I want to be able to remove the programming aspect of things so I can experiment with queries without needing to question anything in my code that is unrelated to the specific query.
