A program I'm developing launches dialog boxes to get information from the user. Right now, the user can still click on and manipulate the main form while the dialog box is open. How can I make the main form inaccessible until the user closes the dialog box?

The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?

View 6 RepliesI'm having an interesting issue that I can't reproduce on a different project, but can consistently on this one. I have no clue what might be causing it, but am hoping that someone may have seen it before.
I have a main form, from which I run a series of checks. On this form, I have a listview control. Because of some issues with the refreshing of this listview control, I had to create my own messagebox. It's just a form that displays some text ( it also happens to look nicer than MsgBox; in my opinion, anyways ). It's been working great for months, until recently.
My problem is that on my main form's load event, I run this check, which returns an error within a try/catch block. I then call my custom messagebox with a message. It in turns calls it's ShowDialog() function.
In any other situation ( after the main form has been loaded ), I have no problems. The messagebox goes on the screen and behaves appropriately ( ie: waits for my input and acts as a modal dialog ( stops execution of my main form's thread ) ). However, on this onload event, my messagebox comes up and goes away almost immediately afterwards.
I've traced it all the way to the showdialog() call. For no explicable reason, it appears to skip right over this call, without me doing anything on the form.

Now, I want to have a second form for adding a new record. If I bind the controls to the datasource it creates new TableAdapaters and new Bindingsources on that form. I was wondering if it's possible to simply use the ones from the main form instead like this

sometimes (not everytimes), when I call the Me.Hide() in a form, which I called with .ShowDialog(), the main form, which called this dialog minimized.

I'm writing an application in which a user can add, change and delete members from a list of members, and the adding and changing is done in a dialog box with some input fields.The problem is that when the user presses the OK button it should test whether some combobox is still empty, since this will otherwise return nothing and that will create an error somewhere else in the program. I do this within the OK_Button_Click event of the dialog box by testing whether the selectedItem is equal to nothing, if not it calls me.close, but if it is equal to nothing it displays a messagebox indicating that the user should still pick something from that combobox.Now the problem: when the OK button is clicked in the messagebox the dialog box also closes, even though the me.close isn't executed. View 2 RepliesI'm trying to make a main menu which accepts user input and then checks inputted password for validity against passwords I hardcoded into an array. Firstly, in the for loop, only the first password index is being checked. I'd like the inputted password to be checked against EACH password inside the ValidPasswords() array.
Second, My for loop isn't doing what I want it to do. I'd like to give the user 3 chances to enter a password... If he/she exceeds 3, it tells them they've tried 3 times and exits the form. Right now, it just loops 3 times and exits without giving the user a chance to try again. If I put a return statement in, it just keeps returning and doesn't loop 3 times.

im trying to do where the main form is a login form if the USer and password matches that in the code it goes to the main screen if it doesent it launches a form saying this user and or password is incorrect and when you click ok it closes that message window as well as the login form stop the program from launching is has to match the user and password from the text on text box one and masked textbox 1.

I have a piece of code connecting to my database retrieving data. I was just testing the form on another computer and everytime it loads this specific form it closes the form.You can see the lines I had to comment out in order for the form to NOT close on load. Is there something possibly that needs to be installed on this other computer? running XP pro 32 bit.

My form closes whenever I insert an object that has a data bound in it. The object I'm trying to insert is a textbox from the data source window (drag n drop). I've checked on the database and that the table has records in it.
