Detecting A Serial COM Port?

Nov 9, 2009

I am developing a UI for an embedded device that I have designed and built. The device uses an FT232 chip which, when connected via USB is automatically assigned one of the COM ports. I was wondering if there is a way to set up a loop which would automatically detect which COM port the device has been assigned. I could then add some handshaking to verify that the port is correct.

Updating A Text Box After A Com Port Command?

Jan 7, 2011

I created a form which I communicate with a Programmable logic controller through the Com Port. I have successfully sent commands to it and it has responded with the correct response. For example if i send the command CR through the Com port It comes back CC.I have put a timer that checks the text box for the com port response The problem is that the check box ticks if CC is put in manually into the textbox but once it is sent from the com port it don't automatically do it when the textbox refreshs. How can I refresh the textbox so that it ticks the box after a automatic change of text. I have also tried the textchanged method.

Receiving Command Codes Via Serial Port?

Jul 14, 2010

I am currently writing a console code that I will eventually create with a GUI. The problem I am currently having is that when a message I received to the port is an ASCII command code i.e. <BEL> <CR> then rather than printing these messages
it performs the command and I am unable to respond as per when the command is received. Is there a way to alter the code so I can see these messages or at least determine its been sent so I can respond to it?

TCP Protocols - Sending Command To Specific Port On Same Computer

Mar 10, 2011

I am working on writing a program that needs to send a command to a specific port on the same computer, I have that working fine. There is another piece of software running that is listening to that port for some commands (read on).
Dim myTcpClient As New TcpClient
myTcpClient.Connect("127.0.0.1", 61225)
Dim networkStream As NetworkStream = myTcpClient.GetStream()

However when I try to send a command I get no response...
Dim outStream As Byte() = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes("0x33")
networkStream.Write(outStream, 0, outStream.Length)
networkStream.Flush()

I have been given a list of protocols that I need to send to that port. What I have been told is that the size (in byes) is 1 and the value is "0x33" with no parameters. I am completely new to sockets and sending data through tcp.

VS 2010 Detecting Lid Close Change

Dec 7, 2011

I've been attempting to determine if a notebook's lid has been closed when the power setting is set to "Do Nothing."I was able to get this to work by trapping the WM_POWERBROADCAST message, but it would only work when the computer when to sleep. I've tested this on many different notebooks and the results vary. Even when changing the power settings correctly, the results were fairly inconsistent.So I posted this question in General Developer and penegate offered a possible solution.[code] I'm thinking that maybe the message I'm trapping isn't correct, but I'm not 100% sure. When I Google that message, nothing comes up. Two links appear. The one on VBF and some German site. Nothing's on MSDN.

VS 2010 - Detecting Mouse / Keypress Input

Dec 5, 2011

I am creating an application that creates scripts to move a mouse and to click where a user wishes to via pre-programmed code and to also press keys where required. I have the code to move a mouse and to manually click anywhere. What I am after is to detect when a mouse button is pressed and dragged and when keys are pressed.

I see that there is the following
MouseButtons.ToString
To detect when a mouse button is pressed, and have it looping in a timer. Is there a better way to do this? I would rather not use a timer. And is there a similar routine to detect which keys are pressed?

Reading EXCEL In 2010 Detecting Blank Cells

May 16, 2012

My Visual Basic .Net 2010 application reads data from an EXCEL spreadsheet which will be generated by my "customers". The responses to Alkis last year (23 July 2011) has been a big help and got me over a hump in my application. Now I am down to the last issue - how do I detect a blank cell? Valid data is numeric, starts at a fixed cell (A5 to be specific), and will be continuous until it ends with blank cells. While blank cells appear to print a "zero", when I try to use zero as an end criteria I get a 'System.InvalidCastException'. When I put in a specific end value (-1) in the last cell all works fine but that, of course, is an invitation to a user error.What is the difference between "Value" and "Value2" and where might I find documentation that explains the difference? I've done some digging and it looks like windows API can solve my problem but i really suck at using windows API and it looks like SetWindowsHookEx() can solve my problem but i don't know how to use it correctly. This is the code from Pinvoke that I modified to hopefully work for a mouse click. i'm having trouble getting this to work.

Using A Serial Port In A DLL With .NET 2010?

Jun 3, 2012

I am trying to buld a DLL in VB.NET 2010 that will be use to control a vending machine.Whin a call into the DLL to a function to open and setup the comport the first time its opens it just fine, but if a call into the DLL again it does not know that the port is open even if it is still open. I can check with another program and is shows the port is open and if I try to call into the DLL again to open the port I get an error that the port is already open. Any idea how to set this up so it will work.

I need to open and config the com port in one call that leaves it open and then in other call use the com port to talk the equipment in the machine without closing the com port untill it is required to close it.

VS 2010 - WCF Not Binding To TCP Port

Jul 23, 2010

I'm using VB.Net in VS2010, I'm attempting to self-host a WCF service. (It's actually in a windows service, but I'm trying to do this via a simple console app. Below is the code in question, the TCP/IP addresses are injected directly here. The WCF service itself is simply a renamed DEFAULT new WCF service project.

Dim host As New ServiceHost(GetType(TestService))
Dim tcpb As New NetTcpBinding()
tcpb.PortSharingEnabled = True
host.AddServiceEndpoint( _
GetType(ITestService), _
tcpb, _
"net.tcp://localhost:62020/TestWcfService/" _
) host.Open()
Console.ReadKey(True)
host.Close()

Is there something special I need to do to get the port to actually bind? when I run netstat -a it doesn't show a listening port on 62020 I am really at my whits end on this. I have another WCF service I'm trying to migrate out of IIS, and into a separate server running in a Windows Service. The WCF service will only be accessed internally. I've been having numerous issues in getting that migrated, so trying to get a simple service to bind, and have a client (website) access it. The other WCF is binding (different port) fine, but having communications errors.

VS 2010 VB + ASP.NET COM Port Conflict

Dec 13, 2011

Apologies for the long post, but I would be very greatful for any advice given. I have developed a visual basic application to communicate with a device through a COM port. This application works fine. The device connected to the COM port sends information relating to the status of the device, this information is read in using VB and inturn written to an SQL database. Using the visual basic application the user can also send commands through the COM port to the device. The application scans the users computer and detects all available COM prots, these are presented to the user and they can select which one to connect to. The COM port is held open for the entire period that the program is in use (this is to allow for the incomming information to be read)

VS 2010 Launching New Process & Detecting If That Process Has An Error Message

Nov 19, 2011

I am working on a small VB application that listens for commands sent from an Android app.

One of the functions is to extract an archive. I am familiar with how to listen for the unrar process to finish, so I can display a progressdialog on the phone while the extraction is happening, and clear it as soon as it's done.

BUT ... if there is an error/alert from WinRAR, WaitForExit() never gets called because WinRAR is still sitting there open until I click "OK" on the MsgBox.

For Example ... if you try to extract a file that is not actually an archive... an alert will pop up saying "No Archives Found", and basically everything is halted on the VB app and the Android app, and the Android app just sits on a progressdialog saying "extracting..." until you manually hit "OK" on the computer.

As you can imagine, this is a problem if the whole point of your app is to NOT have to go over to the computer.

So... I am wondering if there is something similar to WaitForExit() that will wait for an error and allow me to close out the alert and let the process end.

Here's my Sub for the UnRar command:

Private Sub UnRar(ByVal WorkingDirectory As String, ByVal filepath As String)
Dim objRegKey As RegistryKey
objRegKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("WinRARShellOpenCommand")

[Code]......
