VS 2010 Downloading Multiple Files At Once?

Oct 31, 2010

I'd like to convert a VB6 application to .Net. It downloads multiple files at once and the progress is shown in a Listview. I'm using the Winsock control in a Usercontrol. Every time I start a new download a new instance of the Usercontrol is loaded. This way I can easily download 25 files at once with very low CPU usage.

I looked into the WebClient Class to download the files, but I noticed it only downloads two files at a time. Other downloads won't start unless one of the first two downloads are finished, but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

1) What's the best way to download dozens of files at once? It must be possible to resume the downloads.
2) How do I keep the downloads apart (index number?), so the Listview can be updated accordingly? I don't need help with the Listview itself.

3) Should I use the Backgroundworker or not?

VS 2010 Downloading Multiple Files?

Mar 11, 2011

I'm using a WebClient to download a bunch of small files from a website, but doing them one at a time takes a long time, approximately 20-30 minutes for all of them. Is there a way to download multiple files simultaneously, to shorten the time it takes?

Downloading Multiple Files Specified In TXT Doc?

Aug 18, 2010

I've come up with a way of downloading multiple files specified in a txt doc held on a web server. The problem is it only downloads files not folders, im using the following from the codebank to download the files currently:

Try
mCurrentFile = GetFileName(URL)
Dim WC As New WebClient
WC.DownloadFile(URL, Location)
RaiseEvent FileDownloadComplete()
Return True
Catch ex As Exception
RaiseEvent FileDownloadFailed(ex)
[Code] .....

Can I modify this to allow downloading of folders too or will I have to use a completely different method?

Downloading Multiple Files?

I'm trying to code a program that can download multiple files at once (on different threads of course). I have created a custom listview component that will allow me to add a progressbar directly to it. What my real question is, how can i take a url given by the user from an input box and create a new webclient to handle the downloadasynchronously

VS 2010 - Downloading Files Selectively

Aug 19, 2010

I was wondering if there was anyway to 'scan' page sources of websites and download only certain files based on their extensions, as you would by going to view -> page source in a web browser? Then, saving, perhaps, a .pdf, or a .swf file? I really don't know where to start.

VS 2010 Application.restart() After Downloading A New Update

Sep 9, 2010

I was trying to use application.restart() to restart my application after downloading a new update. It seems to run into the problem where it is trying to start the new application before the original is closed so it errors out and never starts. After reading through some threads here I determined the better way to handle it would be

application.exit() process.start(application.executablepath) This didn't work and gave me what seems to be the same problem. I would also like to note this works fine when running the application through visual studios, it is only when I try to run this independent of VS2010 that the application never restarts.

VS 2010 Downloading Files Form A Webpage?

Here is this code of the webpage:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

[Code]...

What I am wanting to do is create a program that will load up a page (it is password protected) and get the links out of any files that I need to download. The green text is the text that contains the link and will be repeated for every file.One little thing is that there are multiple pages that are accessed through JavaScript with the code highlighted in red. So, I also need to step through the pages and get a list of all files on subsequent pages.

Everytime I run this program, it will get a list of all files and only download the ones that aren't already downloaded. However, I have never done this before and was wondering what I need.I have accessed the source of pages and parsed it for things like links before, but not sure if that is the optimal way or if there is some other way to handle this particular situation easier, especially since I have multiple pages to deal with and JavaScript.

[Resolved] VS 2010 - Downloading Image From URL To File

Mar 8, 2011

I have been searching for quite some time, and while this might be easier than I am making it, but this is the first time I have tried to do something like this. My issue is that I am creating a pdf and need to include am image that I have to download from a dynamic URL. The issue I am having is how do I get the image saved to a file on our server? As far as I have seen, there is not a way to directly put in the image into the pdf - but if you know a way to do this, that might work instead.

VS 2010 VB 2010 - Program For Multiple Choice Test?

Apr 2, 2011

I'm really new at programming and was looking for guidance about a project I have.I have to design a program that administers a multiple choice test to users. It delivers questions one at a time, from a predefined test file for the user to answer. It also marks and displays a score at the end of the test.

First, a QUESTION form verify's the user's registration status and access. The user provides a registration number and password and the program reads it from a "registration.txt" file to determine if the user is eligible to take the test (i.e., they are registered to take it). If it is correct, then the user presses the "Begin" button. If not, then a message appears and the student tries again to enter the information.

A read only text box will display the score at the end of the test (String with format correct/total) and the user can't retake the test.Second, a QUESTION form opens after clicking "Begin" on the entry form. The questions are going to be from a "testfile.txt" file.Each question is on multiple lines in the file. The first line consists of the question followed by possible answers followed by the correct answer ( 3 items are separated by "#"). The current question number and the question will be displayed in textboxes.'n'= possible answers; so each of the next 'n' lines provides a possible answer. All possible answers will be displayed in a Listbox.After the user selects an answer, an ''Enter'' button is pressed. This will submit and evaluate the answer. If nothing is selected a textbox should appear and display the error message (APPEARS ONLY IF THERE IS AN ERROR). After pressing ''Enter'', the next question is displayed.When all questions answered, the entry form is displayed again and displays the score.

I know that's a lot of information, but I wanted it to be really clear. Would it be best to cycle/loop the questions with a DoWhile loop? And how would I store the answers while the user goes through the test?

Downloading A File In VB?

Sep 20, 2009

I've got a code in VB that will download a txt file from a website. The problem is I want this file to be downloaded into whatever folder that my program is in. for example, if my program was in C:

andom_folder then I would want this txt file downloaded to C:
andom_folder

Here is some of my

My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile _
("http://www.mywebsite.com/test.txt", _
"define where file should go here")

But in the spot to put where to place the file, I can't just put C:andom_folder because individual users may have this program installed in other parts of there computer.

Tell When AxWindowsMediaPlayer Is Downloading?

May 2, 2012

I am using AxWindowsMediaPlayer on VB.NET to preview MP3 files from the web so that the user can choose to download it if he likes it. It works. I just put a link in the URL property and after a while it begins playing. ... after a while, of course. Because it has to download the file first. Perhaps I realized that because of my slow connection XD. But that made me think: how can I tell if the player is currently downloading a file? So that I can put a label saying "Please wait, preparing file..." or something.

Asp.net - Downloading Exe Files From Database?

May 15, 2012

I have some exe files that I've uploaded into my database as I don't want them to be publicly accessible. I tried using a link button and a generic handler to serve the file using the following code:

Context.Response.Clear()
Context.Response.ContentType = "application/exe"
Context.Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "filename=program.exe")
Context.Response.BinaryWrite(binaryfile)

The problem: Google Chrome does not treat the download as any other exe, instead after downloading it reports "program.exe is not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous." with a "discard" button and the option to "keep" the download is hidden under a context menu.

serve exe files stored in the database?
