View 5 RepliesThis question is similar to How to emulate MySQLs utf8_general_ci collation in PHP string comparisons but I want the function for vb.net rather than PhP.Recently I make a lot of supposedly unique key. Some of the keys are equivalent under UTF8 unicode collation. For example, look at these 2 key:
byers-street-bistro_38.15-79.07
byers-street-bistro‎_38.15-79.07
If I paste that into front page, and look at the source code you'll see
byers-street-bistro__38.15_-79.07
byers-street-bistro‎__38.15_-79.07
Note: In stack overflow they still look different.I know it's not the same. I guess even in stack exchange it doesn't show. Say I have 1 million such records and I want to test whether 2 string WILL be declared the same by MySQL UTF8 collation. I want to know that before uploading. How do I do that.So vb.net think that those are different keys. When we created mysql query and upload that to database, the database complain it's the same key. Just one complain and the upload of 1 million databases will be stuck. We don't even know what the hell is ‎? Where can we look that up anyway?Anyway, I want a function that when given 2 strings will tell me whether they will count as the same or not.If possible we want a function that convert strings into their most "standard" form. For example, ‎ seems to encode nothing and the function would recoqnize all those nothing character and eliminate that.Is there such thing? So far this is what I do. I need something more comprehensive.

I try to implement a search within an xps file, but searching for <> instead of <> returns nothing.
UPDATE: At least i found the list here of xml document escape characters

View 2 RepliesI am trying to convert text inputed in a text box to unicode. I need to the program to process each letter and return "the letter = the unicode" in the label.
For example, if the user enters "apple" the lable would read: a=65 p=80 p=80 l=76 e=69
I know the AscW command will return the Unicode Integer but I only know how to do the conversion for single letters
The code below only processes the first letter and only returns the code, not "the letter = the code"

View 2 RepliesAt me soon the roof will go, I can not solve one problem. The problem consists in the following, I accept sms through components devshock, in unicode a format. The message text comes back in an array from bytes in a following kind, we will tell: byte: (4, 18).Though if to translate unicode the text in VB.NET as follows:
Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(<text>) the array of such kind comes back: byte (18, 4), i.e. on the contrary. And so all text. How it is possible to transform the given file to a normal, convertible kind?

View 3 RepliesI've been looking for a way to convert Unicode characters into ANSI, but unfortunatelly I can't find what I'm looking for, so please be so kind and help me with this one.I'll use example in my native language (Polish). How to I convert characters such as „, ˜, † to A, E, C etc.If you have an English version of Windows and you attempt to save a txt in Windows Notepad with such characters, you will get a warning message saying those will be converted to ANSI. This is precisely what I would like to achieve in a TextBox in .NET.Basically Unicode in TextBox1 and the same text but in ANSI in Textbox2.
View 2 RepliesI'm fairly new to VB.NET, and I'm working on a text editor with a tabbed interface. I deal with large text files. Should I have each tab / text document open up in a new thread or a process? I basically want the entire application to always run fast as the text editor is just one part of it. If I have several large text files open I don't want the rest of the application slowing down a bit.

What is the source code to display Unicode text in a textbox?
I basically know how to display ASCII code in a text box, but I'd like to be able to display Unicode in a text box.
I ran across my first unicode data, and I am not sure what to do with it. I read the unicode text from a binary file using the ReadBytes method, because ReadChars threw an exception when it tried it. Well, long story short, I have found a way to work with the data, I can convert it using a small Function I wrote, which goes something like this: [Code] And this works wonderfully. It just throws away anything not in the ASCII range, including the BOM at the start of the unicode data.
But I would guess that this method is not very universal and probably not the best way. Are there any VB functions available to do this sort of thing? I was able to find something called Text.Encoding, but there didn't seem to be a reverse of that not that I found anyhow. Any ideas?
I'm adding a method to find and select text in my text editor. Everything worked fine, including the ability to find all instances of the text. My problem came when I tried to make it more user-friendly (doesn't it always?). Originally I had only a menu item with a shortcut( Ctrl + F) which invoked an input box.
Then I added a textbox and a button (similar to that seen in a web browser's Find() method) that calls the method in the same manner as the Find/Replace menu option and displays the desired text in the textbox. Everything works fine except that the text is not selected. I have MessageBoxes displaying the values of required variables in 3 places (marked ***FOR DEBUG ONLY***) to make sure that no values are being changed, but all variables are the same. The method still locates the text, but it is not highlighted.
I think it could have something to do with which object has focus. (When I click the button, the selected text loses focus?). But if I click everything with the menu items, it still works...

I have a problem reading ID3v2 text identifier tags when they are encoded in unicode. If i update the tags using winamp the tags are encoded in UTF-16 with BOM. When i try to read the tag i step through each byte and use chr(byte) to get the character that that byte represents. But when the bytes are unicode i get some characters (shown below) as the first two characters:
The remaining characters are correct, it's just these 2 first ones.
What are these for? and how can i get rid of them or read the bytes as unicode characters? i've tried reading the ID3 website and many other sites too but i don't know what to do. i can check the text-encoding byte in that tag frame to determine whether or not the tag is encoded in unicode or ISO-8859-1 but i don't know what to do next.
I have a TrueType font in my PC. And there are some unicode characters in it which I want to insert it into my RichtTextBox. I have to produce a basic text editor with buttons along the top and a richtext box below. I am currently struggling with 'Save if changes are made' objective. I am using a RichTextBox as a text editor. Each chr() has its own color. I am using rtfText.SelectionColor with rtfText.SelectedText. I have to, or I think I have to, Use For/Next Loops with Do While Loops to search for each Chr() using Mid() & InStr(). Of course this works very well but, it is waaaaayyyyy to slow. Some of the files can be over 8MB. Is there a better way? Am I doing this right?
