I have a UI control that gets updated from two different threads using the standard delegate/Invoke thing. The problem is that the calls that go through the invoke are happening way after the calls from the main thread. I need them to update the UI in the order they where called.

I have an initialize function that loads data into my textbox NameTextBox, and then I add an "s" to the name. I then click the Save button that executes SaveButton_Click when debugging the value for NameTextBox.Text is still the original string (FirstName) and not (FirstNames).

I tried to increment a value as long as I press a button. The incremented value is connected via binding to a TextBox. The problem occures when I update the underlaying integer. I get an exception that another Thread owns it.

Whenever I change a user setting in app.config (via running the program) the change doesn't appear in the app.config file (it stays the same). When re-running the program, however, the change is reflected in the program's behaviour. How can this happen if app.config wasn't altered when the program was last run?

Can I just give my users a new copy of the .dll or do I have to re-reference it in my project and then compile my programs all over and then give them a new copy of the entire program?

What I want to do is execute a series of methods right in a row, each in their own threads. I want the application to wait until all of these threads are completed, after which the program will resume. It also has to use managed threading (thread pool).
What quick examples could you provide to help me along the way? If it's too complex, what things should I know about so that I can Google it on my own?
I have a main thread which is designed to be a batch processor - it spawns a series of 'child' threads from a loop (which can vary in terms of the no of items) - see below

However, each of the 'child' threads could take anywhere from milliseconds to about a minute to process - depending on the complexity of each calculation. There may also be a large number of child threads - e.g 100s. Creating large numbers of child threads is not efficient. I therefore want some way to effectively queue each child thread (and cancel if the process is taking too long to complete). Autoevents seems like one way of doing this, but the only examples I can find seem to assume there are two different processes on seperate threads, not one process being repeated.

I have an issue with a data table that I have updated using the datatable.update command.The datatable is bound to the datagridview using dgv.datasource = datatable.I have used INSERT and UPDATE commands and the INSERT command writes the data back to the database ok. However my problem is that it the dgv is not updated with the primary key (ID field) from the database. So when I save a second time, instead of updating it just inserts the data again.

I have run into a problem with saving to database when running the program I am making.
I have an mdf file called prices.mdf and have set the "copy to output directory" to copy if newer setting and set this for the ldf file build action is set to content.. should it be compile or a different setting??
I access this database thru a dataset called pricelist dataset and when the program runs and you go to forms to update the prices, each form has a datagrid with the toolbar and the save icon. Mostly I followed tutorials to help me put it together.
When you run the change price menu for each part of the database, they appear to save each time u re run the program. But once you close down vb2010 and reopen it a day or so later and rerun, the new prices are gone and the old prices are being used.
I thought changing the setting on the mdf file to copy if newer is the usual fix for this, but as I said I have already got it set to copy if newer.
I can't figure out how to track what the dataset is accessing to make sure it is going to that database, or if i have made some sort of other database that it is accessing instead as well as the mdf database.
when I look at the dataset and the column entries for each part of the prices database, as to whether i need to check the dataset itself, or the forms the datagrids are on with the toolbar save icon, or whether there is another place to check to see if it needs to be changed to something like change if newer.
Obviously the program is working and doing the changes, but not storing them in the right place, so I am losing the changes once i shut down my project and reopen it.
also I have looked at the file propertiesand made sure they all set to copy if newer PricelistDataSet.xsd, pricelistdataset.designer.vb, and also the pricelist dataset.vb, xcs and xss ones are all set to copy if newer when I look in the solution explorer.butsome of the build part is set to compile on some and none for others As I am not experienced with VB 2010 or databases I am not sure how to track it down
Update: Just looked under each of the forms the data grids are on. and see the copy to output directorys on these are set to do not copy for each of the designer.vb, vb and resx. I am bit hesitant to change these without getting some advice from more experienced people if the forms also need to be set up to copy if newer.

I've written an app - that use httplisteners to talk to other winforms (they will be services but are now simple form apps so I can easily show stats as they communicate). One UI app talking to three other "service" apps - all talking to each other as well...Everything uses multi-threading...At any rate - how many threads do I have available - I see that most of the apps seem to run "two or three" consecutive threads - but not more than that.Is that just a byproduct of running in the IDE - or is there a max of number of threads available?When more threads are asked for than are available - do they simply wait to get started for a free thread to become available?
View 4 RepliesIn the past few weeks, to speed up our database freshening process, I've created a couple of extra programs, basically copies of the exe file. The program itself, accesses web pages, images etc and uses threads to do so. The second program uses LIMIT 300,100 and the third LIMIT 600,100, to make sure they don't work on the same records.
Before the last few weeks, one occurrence of the program used to run without problem, from the task scheduler all through the day. Only one occurrence of each exe can run at a time.Since theres now three programs running, .net 2.0, on xp, the program often seems to get stuck and never ends. I have to kill it from task manager.
It runs fine in the IDE I just wonder if there would be any benefit from upgrading to vb.net 2010 ?
How do I make my program create new threads from a set amount? For example if someone typed "60" in a textbox and they pressed "Start", it would create 60 threads that would do the same function.

Im creating a server for a type of application on a mobile platform. When a user sends a message a sub in my server is called through WCF. Anyway from the sub that gets called when a user sends a message I add my ProccesMessage sub to a threadPool with the actual message as argument. In ProccesMessage sub I want to write the message to a log. I have Implemented this by directly writing the message to a log from the respective threads. Now since only me is testing this there is very little chance that 2 messages will arrive at the same time

Each thread calculate some data independently. however, they will need share a hashtable which controls a hardware resource. because the resource is limited, so, it may need lock the resource for a thread, and then release it when thread is finished. and the resource can not be reused immediately, will have to wait for some time, say 5 or 10 minutes, for the device to reset.

When multithreading in VB, if you close the form while different threads are running, the process itself will not end. Is there a way I can force all threads to end, or end the process like in the Task Manager, when the form is closed?

I load a DataGridView (VB.Net, VS2005) using the code below. The save logic works fine for manual edits oh the cells.However, I run some code that updates a Status column in every row then I call the same Save logic. All rows execpt the first row are updated! I am updating the Datasource (dvCerts)Ah.... I just tried changing the CurrentCell to 1,0 instead of 0,0 and now the data saves OK.

The table is not getting updated.
I'm trying to write my first application which connects to an Access db. It took me hours to understand this, but I figured out that, if during the creation of the connection I chose to copy the mdb file in my project directory (VB asks this), I get that the database is not updated. Everything works, except the save button which saves new rows in the db. If I answer no, and the original mdb file is used, the database is correctly updated as expected. Is there a reason for this? Why is this happening? Shouldn't the database bu updated anyway?
