so I want to make a button in one of my programs that writes text to a file. I know how to do that part. I use:
[Code]...
I want to create a little program with textboxes in it, that writes the contents of these textboxes to a file. It also needs to write some predefined lines to the files, even on the same line as where the contents of the textbox is.
Heres an example:
The file should look like this when you open it in notepad:
^1::
Send t Text from TextBox {Enter}
First I think I would need to do this:
Dim ioFile As New StreamWriter("scripting.ahk")
ioFile.WriteLine("^1::")
If I do the above it works.. But how can I write another line where the "Send t" and "{Enter}" gets written automaticly before and after the contents from the Textbox?
I have seen a few different ways of Reading/Writing Text files. What i am trying to achieve is a simple debug file in the most efficient way possible. Currently I have....
If System.IO.File.Exists(debugpath) = True Then
Dim Debugwriter As New System.IO.StreamWriter(debugpath, True)
Debugwriter.WriteLine(debugwrite)
Debugwriter.Close()
[code]....
1. Do I have to close and reopen the file each time I want to write to it.
2. In vbscript I would simply open the the file at the start of the script and close at the end is the same possible here.
I am trying to show the following code in a text box on separate lines. Is it possible to code in a hard return?

I'm writing a program where there are text boxes and the user can enter info and append them to a text file as well as read from the text file and view the various entries in it. The problems I'm running into are that I have a button that opens an open file dialog box allowing you to select the file, and I want to get it to open the first entry of that file in the correct text boxes. the code so far looks like this
code:
I used to have this bit of code in there but there was a conflict with the .txt file being used more than once at the same time while it was in there.
code:
Im also having trouble writing to the file and I'm not sure why. I have an "Append" button that has this code in it
code:
and it comes up with the issue "object reference not set to to an object instance".
I'm trying to create a program that stores a users stats for their character (for something like an RPG). I know how to write more than one line in a text file, but I want to learn how to read and write text on specific lines of my file. I know that you can just read each new line individually in order using a StreamReader, such as
username.text = readLine.ReadLine()
userage.text = readline.ReadLine()
[Code]....
This is good for just displaying the stats and changing them from a constant interface, but I'm afraid that eventually I'll need to read/write specific lines, like reading the fourth line which might specify magic level, or writing a new money amount.
I am using the following code to write lines to a file. I seem to get Zero's after my text.Any suggestions to get the trailing zeros out of my text file? [code]
View 2 RepliesI want to save datetimepicker value of date and time in two separate text files. Currently, when I select a date from datetimepicker and save it in a text file it saves both date and time as below:
5/11/2011 8:25:06 PM What I would like to happen is as below: Datefile.txt saves 5/11/2011 Timefile.txt saves 8:25:06 PM Alternative solution that can work for me would be, if the time (only the TIME) can be modified after saving as below: saved datetime into text file is 5/11/2011 8:25:06 PM
How can I modify the time only to say 12:00:00 PM. By doing so I would like to keep time as 12:00:00 but date can be changed by the user using the datetime picker.
I'm working on a program where i need to create a text file and write in it. I created the file and I'm capable to write in it but my problem is that i'm not able to write text on the same line. Imagine you have 2 textboxes, the first is tb1 and the second is tb2. how can i write then content of the 2 textboxes on the same line in the text file?

so i have it so that the user input three initials and presses an enter button. Then it goes into a listbox where theusers initials and game score enter. I then have it transfer to a text file. all this works but i need some code toun through the text file and arrange them from highest to lowestheres my current "HighScore" codei know its going to be a for loop but im a beginner in vb and it would be so much easier in java button1 is the enter buttonbutton2 is the save button that saves to a text file

I am having difficulty writing to cvs files. My application is a text parser that scans a txt file, removes punctuation, and then stores the individual words in another txt file for later analysis. My end aim is to process txt for semantic similarities. I'm very new to this so my code is very chunky But I'd really like to pull each sentence from txt file, put into an array, and then place each array item into a CSV file with commas between words. View 3 RepliesMy app has a series of parameters that is to be stored in an external files. Eventhough the "parameter" file could be edited by the end user, I really don't care that much about what the user does to them.
So my two questions are, what is the most effeicent means of reading and writing a file and in what format should the file be in? When I say effeicent I mean, what utilizes the least amount of memory during the process, is fast, and disposable.
Example: XML, Text, something else. StreamReader / StreamWriter or what ever.
I am witting an app that will generate batch files to do an unattended installation of a share point 2007 farm. I already have a batch file I use and it's pretty big. I copied and pasted the content into my application, and I'm using the System.IO.StreamWriter to write to the batch file from the winform. [code]As you can probably guess, I'm doing all of this in my mainform code window. There are maybe 3 or 4 batch files that will be generated based on the selections made on the form. For example, I'm generating a batch file to create the OU, Group and service accounts the farm will use in active directory, I'm creating a batch file for all of the variables that will be used for the additional batch files created, etc. How can I split this up? is there a way to create the batch files without having to actually copy, paste my existing batch file content into the mainform code window? I'm using file.writeline on each line of the pasted content by the way.
View 7 RepliesI'm getting a problem when writing text files using StreamWriter. The files read fine and they write fine if I'm not overwriting an existing file. They also write ok as long as I'm not writing over a file that only has one digit at the end of the name. For some reason when there are 2 digits at the end it crashes when I'm trying to save over an already existing text file. Here's my code.
StringForTextFile = "C:" & Folder4PS & "" & IDCodewDashOrN & "Series" & Series & "ScreenNumber" & ScreenNumber & ".txt"
LblTesting.Visible = True ' Testing
LblTesting.Text = "StringForTextFile = " & StringForTextFile
[code]....
above but 've tried all the different Encoding possibilites. Unicode, UTF32, UTF8, UTF7 as well as without those parameters listed where the close parentheses is right after StringForTextFile. I get the same result. If I'm writing a new text file that doesn't exist, then no problem or if I'm writing over an existing text file but it has 0 to 9 at the end then I'm ok but if I'm writing over an existing file and there is 10 or above(haven't tried triple digits or all values) then my application crashes. You see the test label in the code above because I was looking at exactly what file it was trying to overwrite and it is just as it should be.
Should I be using a different procedure? An example of a string that would cause a crash for the string StringForTextFile would be:
C:Name of My AppSeries1ScreenNumber10.txt
If it was being written for the first time then no problem or if the 10 at the end was 0 to 9 then no problem also. I've also tried and originally had it set up where there wasn't an If File.Exists(StringForTextFile) = True Then statement. It just always used the same code whether writing or overwriting and I wasn't having a problem that I remember. For some reason I started having a problem recently and I put the alternate methods of writing in.
i have started programming a diary sort of program. i have a home form which takes you to other features. im not sure if there is an easier way to do this but the view is week by week with a new week on a new form. and on each form i have a separate text box for each day. using the code:
'In the form load event:
txtMonday.Text = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText("DayMonth.txt")
'In the text-changed & form closing event:
My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText("DayMonth.txt",
Monday.Text, False)
I have created a code in VB.NET to read data from text files. Data is read from a list of files, where each file is changed using a for loop. Data is written to a new text files. Each file is read one by one and written in the same way. Now, my speed of execution is very slow. I am using a Quadcore processor with only 20-30% of CPU utilization when my code runs. Is there anyway I can increase the speed of reading and writing? To read only 125 files it takes 10 minutes or more, which is very slow indeed, because in the end I need to read thousands of files and write them. Each file is approxiamately 30-50kb.
Here is my code.
Public Sub ReadRMRDataFileIntoTextFiles()
'Read in the customerids once up front
Dim customerids As Collections.Generic.List(Of String)

Problem 1: I am running into a problem with my program that when UAC is active on Vistaaccess to C: and Program Files is not allowed. My program writes text files as a user types. Is there a safe place to write files to that may be some sort of standard instead of throwing files all over the place? Like maybe somewhere in the user's default folder's or something?

I have tried many different storage methods (Array, List, etc) but always without success.Before anyone asks 'why load it all at once', let me say the nature of my app is speed critical and it must be so.
View 3 RepliesI'm working on my very first VB 2008 Express program, having a little bit of experience with VB 6.For my first VB 2008 program, I'm starting out simple. I have two text boxes, named Title and Director.You input text into each text box.I also have a button named GENERATE, which generates a text file named c.est.txt and stores the text box material.[cod]I know how to do this with VB 6, but not with VB 2008, and my research hasn't come up with an explanation of how to format this correctly.So how do I revise this code so that there is a line for each text box string, how do I get rid of the System.Windows.Forms.TextBox stuff and replace it with my own headers, and how do I double-space between lines?
View 13 RepliesI have a quick question. One of the functions in the program I am writing is to take all of the data entered, compile it into an HTML document, then place that document into a folder.For the past few days, I have just been using a random folder on one of my hard drives to dump the file in, but the problem is that, in my code, I have supplied the folder location as a string ("E:Practice FilesDocuments"), and therein lies the problem. Trying to test my program on a separate system brought the bug to my attention; obviously, this program can only write this file to a location of E:Practice FilesDocuments, and if any other computer that runs this program doesn't have E:Practice FilesDocuments then there is going to be a problem in the program working the way I have intended
So what I would like to do is instead of having it write the file to "E:Practice FilesDocuments," have it write to the default My Documents folder so that the program is no longer specific to my machine only. The problem is, though, I have no clue what the right code is to use. I first tried using
System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location to write the file to the default installation directory. This would have worked, but since this is a VB.NET program, the default installation directory isn't in Program Files and doesn't seem to be meant for users to browse through for their documents, plus it seems that trying to write back to this directory causes some unhanded exceptions and whatnot. I figured it would just be easier to create a folder in My Documents rather than use the install directory (and probably smarter).

I created a telephone number form where the user enters the telephone number in a text box as (nnn) nnn-nnnn. The first 3 digits in parenthesis are the ISD code, the next three are the area code and the last four are the local number. I need to separate out these three fields of the phone number and display in three separate text boxes labeled appropriately. Now, suppose the user enters the phone number in a text box as a continuous string of 10 digits, where the first three represent the ISD code, the next three represent the area code and the last four represent the local number. I'm lost as how to change this string into the form (nnn) nnn-nnnn. This is what I have

View 16 RepliesNeed to design a program that can encrypt and decrypt messages stored in simple text files using a private key stored in a separate file. Software should also be able to allow the users to enter simple messages that either displays the encrypted or decrypted message. The encryption method should use a simple substitution method. It should be set out in the following format:
Example (the "@" is the separator):
@
The character The Code End of line
A @ 4gh EOL
B @ 84!9 EOL
Has to use the 256 ASCII character codes. The separator will be used to separate the character and its corresponding code.Here are the pseudocodes I have come up with:
