VS 2010 Time From String - Define As UTC?

Apr 6, 2012

I parse time from string. The time in string is always GMT (you may say it equals UTC).Now I need to convert this time to local time, but there is a catch!For some reason the time parsed from string is being assumed as local time. I need to tell the bloody machine that this time is UTC/GMT, but not local.

Some examples:My string looks like that:

06 Apr 2012 16:27:00 GMT

I parse it like that (eventtime is my string - like above):

vb
Dim eventtimeobject As DateTime = DateTime.Parse(eventtime)
Dim eventtimefriendly As String
eventtimefriendly = String.Format("{0:dd MMM yyyy HH:mm}" + " GMT", eventtimeobject)

and now if I would like to convert it to local time nothing will happen as it is assumed that the above time is actually local.obviously if I tell it to convert the above time to UTC/GMT it will change it, as it does not know what this time is in GMT already.How do I do it? How to I tell the computer that it is dealing with GMT already?

Define A String Literal Containing Non-ASCII Characters?

May 19, 2010

I'm programming in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008. I need to define a string literal containing the character "÷" equivalent to Chr(247). I understand that internally VS uses UTF-16 encoding, but when the source file is written to disk it contains the single byte value F7 for this character.

This source file is processed by another program that uses UTF-8 encoding by default, so it fails to interpret this character correctly, attempting to combine it with the following single-byte character. What encoding would correctly interpret the single byte F7 as the single character ÷?

Alternatively, is there a way of expressing a non-ASCII literal that uses only ASCII characters - like using some kind of escape sequence?

VS 2010 : Define IO.FileInfo Object As Private

Apr 23, 2010

In the following code as you see I am defining myFile inside the timer sub; which of course is not a good idea. The FilePath is derived in form load before the timer kicks in. How can I declare myFile globally so it can be used in timer sub as well as in form load?

Private Sub tmrInterval_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles tmrInterval.Tick
Dim myFile As New IO.FileInfo(FilePath)
If myFile.Exists Then
...
...

I want something like this:

Public Class Form1
private myFile As New IO.FileInfo()

'but I do not have strMessageFilePath value yet, that will be achieved in form load.

VS 2010 Comparing Current Time To Stored Time?

Mar 27, 2011

I'm writing a report scheduler that is somewhat of a clone to the backupexec scheduler and the layout can be seen in post #10 here: [URL]..It works great and saves/edits/deletes records just fine, but now i need to compare those records one at a time in a windows service that i'm writing in order to trigger automated report creation and emailing - i already have the report and i already have the code for the emailing, i'm just looking for the most efficient way to loop through the table (that i've pulled in to a dataset) and compare its records with the current date and time - if true, the event fires.

[Code]...

1stSun, 2ndSun etc are bit fields, time is a datetime, and the remainder are varchar. My service checks the database every thirty seconds.The english version of what i'm trying to do is "Connect to the database, grab the entire table (it will always only have 5-6 entries max, so i felt 30 second sweeps was okay), and If today is the 1st Sunday of the month, and it is currently 11:00:00 a.m. (could be any day or time, this is just an example) - loop through the dataset to identify if any records match the time field or greater - if they do, fire the report

String Search - Parse The String Of Characters One At A Time

May 5, 2012

I have written a program that uses an array of the english alphabet and Morse code. I also built a form with a input box for the alphabetic information and an output box with the Morse Code. What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. Do i need to Parse the string of characters one at a time, and then run it through a loop like i have created?

VS 2010 - Applications Made Using VB 2010 Express Expire After Some Time?

Nov 3, 2011

Here are my questions concerning VB 2010 Express:

1. I've registered my VB 2010 Express, will it still expire?

2. Will the applications I made using VB 2010 Express expire after some time?

3. Is it OK to write my code in the designer.vb file? I don't know why, but when I started writing my application it took me to the designer.vb instead of form1.vb code.

4. I've been working on an application for a week now, but suddenly I can no longer access my Design View(Shift-F7). All my codes are written on the [form name].Designer.vb. I can still view my codes but I cant access my form layout. On the solution explorer, my forms no longer have the 'form icon'. When i press Shift-F7 nothing happens. Right-clicking the form on the solution explorer doesn't show 'View Designer' option. How can I fix this?

String.Split Method - The Error Is Occuring Only At Run-time?

Mar 12, 2010

I'm trying to use this overload

Split(ParamArray separator() As Char, count As Integer) As String()

However, when I use this

Dim tokens() As String = e.Node.Text.Split(New Char() {":"c}, 2)

I'm getting the ArgumentException (Illegal enum value: 2)

I tried using named arguments with no effect:

Dim tokens() As String = e.Node.Text.Split(New Char() {":"c}, count:=2)

Using this overload didn't weed out the error either:

Dim tokens() As String = e.Node.Text.Split(New Char() {":"c}, count:=2, options:=StringSplitOptions.None)

The error is occuring only at run-time. Intellisense swallows it without problem.
