Visual Studio - Open A File As Read-only?
Jun 1, 2011
In Visual Studio, how can I open a source file (from another project) in read-only mode? I want to copy some code from it, but I don't want to modify it by mistake.I don't want to change the file's attributes to read-only, as I will not be able to work on it later, unless I clear read-only.

When I'm in VS2008, and I go to File > Open Project/Solution, it won't let me select a .vbp file type when I have it set to Objects of type "All Project Files (*.sln; *.dsw; *.vcw; *.rptproj; *.dwp" (it looks like it's cut off at that point). Why can't I open a .vbp file with Visual Studio 2008?

The setup is running in 32 bit mode and the installer class is made with Visual Basic installer class.
Now the problem is, how to read SQL Server 2008 64 bit registry settings in Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit machine.
E.g. installed instances and the data paths for every instances.
I need to check the SQL Server instance name and read from registry the database location path for that instance.
By default it reads the 32 bit registry so it does not found the settings at all.
Example code that can be set in visual basic installer class would we nice.

I have a VB application that uses databases and writes information onto an Excel-file. I have the Excel-file in my Project folder(Visual Studio 2008ProjectsProjectXProjectXExcel objektitListy.xls)Every time I open up my project I get the following error:[code]The thing is, I don't know why the error starts up in the first place. Why is the VS 'unable to open the module file' even though it exists in that folder and can be opened normally? Also, why does the error disappear when the file is opened manually from the containing folder?

I am developing a next gen App for my Email Client for future Windows 8 users. Now when i used to use Visual Studio (Visual Basic) 2008 to develop for Windows 7, I used the command "FORMNAME.show()" And that command would open the form. The Problem i am having now is that "SHOW" is not included and im guessing that there has to be another way to do this. For the Beta version of my app, i created a test Button that i want to open a "SplitPage1" the button is called " btnOpen"?Now to give you an idea what i wanna do, i made buttons on the top right hand corner that are called "File , Edit , View" and so on, and when the user clicks file, i want a spiltpage to open with all the options the user would regularly have when clicking file on a menu tab in a program. the options would be lined up on the left hand side when you hover over lets say "New Email" on the right hand side there will be a short description that will appear saying "create a new email to send" and when clicked on it will take the user back to the mainPage and it redirect the browser to "SendnewEmail url".

Stupid question, but how do I get access to this Explorer? The says: To create a performance session for Windows client application:
(1) Open the solution in the Visual Studio IDE.
(2) On the <B>Analyze</B> menu, click <B>Launch Performance Wizard</B>.
(3) From the <B>Which of the following available targets would you like to profile?</B> drop-down list, select the name of the application that you want to profile, and then click <B>Next</B>. You can add more binaries later.
(4) Accept the default Sampling profiling method, and then click Next.
(5) Click <B>Finish</B>.
Only problem is that there is no <B>Analyze</B> menu in the IDE.

I have a number of word documents I am converting. Everything is going great until I get a file that is read only. In this case I get a Save As prompt.
Is there any way to open the file in read/write format? I should have admin privileges so access isn't an issue.
I'm using VB.net to open the files. More specifically
doc = word.Documents.Open(path, Type.Missing, False, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing, Type.Missing)

I have to develop an application using MS Visual Studio 2005 or above with the following objective:
* The application should allow users to create as many new forms as they want and each form should behave like a MS Visual Studio WinForm. By saying that it should be a container for drag and drop of controls from the toolbox that I will develop....
* Once the user design's each screen to his taste by placing various controls on the form, he should be able to save the form as a screen. Of course I have to provide functionality for each of the controls such as if he drags a button on to the form, he should be able to specify what action it has to perfom when clicked when the application is put into run mode. Quite similar to regular windows form button.
* My application should have two modes: a DESIGN MODE, where user can drag, drop controls and specify what they should do when put into RUN MODE. This is quite similar to MS Visual Studio designer.
* Last but not least is to be able to access the application via the browser with the same look and feel his desktop version.

I have a Visual Basic project and when working and modifying code, the compiler will crash and then a message will say something like "Microsoft visual studio encountered a problem and was shut down." I've tried editing code from the solution and the project. Both produce the error. Usually occurs when adding an "IF...Then..." condition. May work for hours but then crash. Solution will compile and build.

I have a MS Visual Studio .NET project created. I also went through the basic steps to add a setup project which created both an .MSI and a setup.exe file under the "Release" folder within the Debug folder. When I ran the setup.exe it installed the website on my http:localhost/Program/default.aspx which is fine and all..
My only problem is that the website does not have some of the customized icons that should be displayed, some of the other files are also missing such as "filename.txt" found in the main directory of my program used for specific calculations. I guess my two questions are:How do I add "All" the files inside my project to the .MSI?? The Website works fine, but its missing some files.
My second question, what if I "Remove" the program? Will it delete all directories, even files manually added to some folders AFTER the installation? For example: Lets say that my website contains a folder called "Data" which gathers data for specific purposes. The "Data" folder is often changed to replace outdated "Data", so when I need to make an update to the program the "Data" should not be removed, my 'client' should be able to just Add/Remove the program to update the program but all the other files should remain unchanged.

I am using the book: Programming with Microsoft Visual Basic 2005: An Object Oriented Approach and have a question. It says for instance: "In Visual Studio, open the solution file of the same name appearing in the folder named Chapter.09Chapter09ApplicationLessonPreview." Where in the world do I find this file? Is this something I have to create myself or is it already done and I just don't know where to look.
