Why Are Types Found On An Imported Namepace But Not On A Fully Qualified Namespace After Retargeting The Framework
Mar 27, 2012
We've just re-targeted a VB.NET project from .Net 2.0 to 3.5.Various framework types are now missing from our project. Wherever the type is referenced using a fully qualified namespace it's missing. If the relevant namespace is imported for the type; it's found. For example, this doesn't find the type Object, with compiler error "System.Object is not defined.":

The scenario is I would like to be able reference two similar 3rd party assemblies (e.g. assem1 and assem2) which both define a type with the same fully qualified name (e.g. Example.MyType). Is there any way to distinguish between these and refernce them seperately? I believe the answer is no but confirmation or correction would be handy. Edit: Answered for C# 2.0 and higher below but need an answer in VB.Net 1.1

Suppose I want to write a generic function that will return the fully qualified name of the data type. In other words, how would you implement the following: Public Shared Function Foo(Of T)() As String ' Return the fully qualified name of T End Function

I am using Visual Studio 2008 and created an ASP.NET 3.5 project and solution. I added another project to my solution, a class library. I added a reference to my class library. Now when I click on the properties of my class library, the Default Namespace is set to "HRCommon", which is correct. Now for some reason, from my ASP.NET application, it's automatically importing the HRCommon namespace. So when I want to reference a class out of my class library, I just need to type the classname. I want to have to specify the whole name, like HRCommon.<ClassName> instead of just <ClassName>.

We are migrating our applications to VB.Net 2008 from Classic VB and I need to create a base namespace and business layer. My method of approach is going to be to visit our top BA and identify the common areas of our (Fixed Income) company and try to form a decent inheritence model with as much of the code in generics as possible. What's everyone's experience of doing this and also as a second part of the question, we are looking at incorporating Web Focus into the OLAP side, how would this affect the design of the corporate namespace and it's derivatives?

When you develop a class library that will be used by others, are there any guidelines on how you decide what namespace to put it under? I often find third party classes just use the company name as the root namespace but I was also wondering if it is frowned upon (or even possible) to add one of your own classes to an existing framework namespace.

I'm setting up a simple XML read-write demo (VB Winforms) in Visual Studio 2010 Premium (tried in both the RC and RTM) and added:
Imports System.Xml
Result: Error Namespace or type doesn't contain any public members or cannot be found...
VS 2008 equivalent example recognizes the Imports statement fine.I know this has to be me, but I'm stumped.
Note: I tried this with the app targeting both .Net 3.5 and 4.0. Same result.

Is there an exhaustive list of all of the "base" (not used in an object-oriented sense but more in a common sense) generic types in the 4.0 .NET Framework? I have found this list that I often send newer/mid-level devs to so they can understand how non-generic types map to generic types, but this is by no means exhaustive. I'm looking for something that also includes things such as KeyValuePair<>, Tuple<>, and other basic generics that may not be very-well known. Interfaces such as IObservable<> would be nice but not necessarily required.

I have a WPF VB.NET project in Visual Studio 2008. For some reason, Visual Studio thinks that it needs to add anImports MS.Internal.Xaml.Builtinsto every auto-generated XAML partial class (= the nameOfXamlFile.g.vb files), resulting in the following warning:warning BC40056: Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'MS.Internal.Xaml.Builtins' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases.I can remove the Imports line, but, since this is an auto-generated file, it reappears every time that the project is rebuilt.

In one of my forms witch I imported from VB2008 there are all properties saved in the *.resx file. One Property, of the Type System.Windows.Forms.Keys, can contain the Value 'Ctrl+F1' witch compiles fine in VB2008, but not in VB2010. To reproduce, simply add the following to any resx file:
<data name="cmdFenster.ShortcutKeys" type="System.Windows.Forms.Keys, System.Windows.Forms">
<value>Ctrl+F1</value>
</data>
It will compile fine with VB2008, but not with VB2010. Notice: The VB2010 also generates this Code in the resx file

What can I do to resolve this problem? The classes in this class library will be used to validate forms data input in a number of varied projects.

I have written an application which manages some bookings, and want to use Crystal Reports to provide the reporting engine. I have used it before with datasets with no problems.
I am using EF4, and have a LINQ query and report datasource assignment as below:
Code:
Dim ActiveCustomers = From Customer In FMEntities.Customers
Where Customer.Status = 1
Select Customer
[Code].....
I have read up that I may need to convert the incoming data, but I am confused as to what it needs to be converted to. Should it be a datatable?

I've started to use a Vista machine for development. In case it is significant: I'm using MSBee so that I can code in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE while still building against the 1.1 framework. On the Vista machine, when I tried to build a particular vb project, I got this error:
error BC30464: Namespace or type'Compatibility' in the project-level Imports 'Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility' cannot be found.
The same project built fine on my old XP machine. I checked in this folder on my Vista machine:
C:windowsmicrosoft.netFrameworkv1.1.4322
...and sure enough, "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility.dll" was missing. So was "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility.Data.dll". Copying them from my XP machine to my Vista machine allowed me to build the project successfully.I'm just a bit puzzled as to why this happened. Why was "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility.dll" missing? I'm also not very comfortable with my chosen solution - copying the DLL manually. It works, but surely there must be a better way.
As far as the configuration:
Vista:
.Net Framework 1.1
.Net Framework 1.1 SP1
.Net Framework 1.1 SDK

I have 2 projects, one built in VB.NET and another in C#.NET. I want to use certain functionality of VB.NET into C#.NET and hence I have added the dll file of VB.NET solution into C#.NET as a reference by browsing the dll from my system. Say dll name for VB.NET is myData.dll. In my C#.NET project I am trying to declare it as a namespace i.e. "using myData;" and its giving me an error of "Type or namespace name could not be found"

This class is located in the namespace Acme.Infrastructure.Interface.A class with the same name EventArgs exists in the System namespace. In another project in my solution I have a class Acme.BusinessModules.MyModule.MyClass.When attempting to use the EventArgs class I have to fully qualify the class name or the compiler thinks I am using the System.EventArgs class. My understanding of namespace resolution was that the compiler would first look for the class in the current namespace, and then its parents. It seems that the compiler checks in System before it checks in sibling namespaces. Is it correct that System is checked before the sibling? Or is this behaviour caused by other issues (Imports order?)?

I have a class with a Property called 'Value' which is of type Object.Value can be of any type, a structure, a class, an array, IList etc.My problem is with the setter and determining whether the value has changed or not. This is simple enough for value types, but reference types and lists present a problem. For a class, would you assume that the Equals method has been implemented correctly, or just assume that the value has changed every time the setter is called? If I did assume it's changed, then perhaps I should assume it for value types as well, so that the behaviour is consistent.
