Windows 7 Task Scheduler / System.InvalidOperationException Was Unhandled
Nov 19, 2009
I'm upgrading from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm using VB in VS 2008. Under XP, I used the Task Scheduler to run a program at 3pm every weekday, and it ran fine. Now in W7, when the Task Scheduler runs the programs, it encounters an exception when it gets to the code MyForm.ShowDialog(). The error is:
System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled
Message="Showing a modal dialog box or form when the application is not running in UserInteractive mode is not a valid operation. Specify the ServiceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly style to display a notification from a service application."
Source="System.Windows.Forms"
[code].....
When I run the program from a shortcut with the same parameters as in the Task Scheduler (i.e. the shortcut runs the .exe file with some paramters after it), it runs fine, so I'm guessing there is some setting in the Windows 7 Task Scheduler I need to set, but I can't find it. I've tried checking "Run with highest privledges" (and unchecking it), but that didn't help. I have tried it with the "Hidden" box unchecked and checked and that didn't help. I've also tried it with "Configure for" set either way (Windows 7 or Vista). So how do I get rid of this error?
I have an import program which I run manually everyday. I want to automate it but i'm not sure whether to make it a windows service or add it as a scheduled task. It needs to run at 11:00 and again at 16:00. Please advise
I have set up several tasks on a new installation of Windows 7 and they are working as expected.But when I attempted to run a batch file it fails. It works fine from the command line and I can run it from the scheduler on Windows XP manually (although not on the timer yet).What is about batch files that I need to know to make them run from the Task Scheduler?
I am working on an application with a friend and I am getting an error.The error says:
System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message=An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The process cannot access the file 'C:UsersAdministratorNotesWebSiteNotes.txt' because it is being used by another process. Source=Website Notes
[code]....
Now I know why it is throwing this error but nothing I do will stop it from showing up.At the top of our form we have a module that we use to check if a file exists on the computer and if it doesn't then it will create the file.I have tried accessing that module from the form load event but with no luck as it still throws the error.
at my visual studio class we made a data base program! i was using VB 2008 on a win xp x86 machine i copy the project on a usb stick because i want at home to work on visual aspects! my pc have win 7 x64 and now my project doesnt work! it shows me an error i cant get to the second form from project!here is the error:
System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine." Source="System.Data" StackTrace:
I got the error after I added forms from another project into a new project. Theres no error in my code so it doesn't show where the error occurred.. out and explain what this exception means?
I only know how to add your program to windows task scheduler to schedule automatic execution but what if you wanted to have a particular thread run on a weekly schedule. Someone mentioned windows powershell for all these types of scripting; but it seems too hard to learn on short notice.
A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll It displays in my Immediate Window when i run my program, I'm using a text reader to read a number of XML files using background worker...most the time it stops so something is wrong but sometimes it works fine.
ok so i viewed some other question that are ruffly the same and i am still confused, here is the stacktrace

also, where is game3.my.myproject, obviously its a line of code but what is it in.
automatic scheduler apart from creating windows service in .net or OS batch scheduler?I 'm aware of this two, Is there a 3rd way to create automated process in .net.I having facing limitations in creating windows service like I have semi admin rights so it doesn't allow me to install windows service also I can't view the windows service.
I'm typing this up only to document it and possibly save others the three days of frustration and hell I had to go through. Because this unhanded exception was damned near untrappable (it happens on Form.Show(), but since my primary form was affected, I couldn't tell at the time), it's one I know I lost a lot of hair nailing down.
I have an office application. Standard fare utility program that grew to do lots of custom tricks for my place of business. Lots of database providers to pull data from various unconnected sources and crystal reports to make fancy reports from it all.
When I make a change or addition to it, it usually is only needed by one employee, so I only deploy the new version to one computer at a time. Recently, I had to reinstall the program to the whole company. Everything was going fine, until somebody who had a Windows XP machine tried to run it. It was giving a "clr20r3" "System.InvalidOperationException" on program boot. None of my Try-Catch blocks were catching it. Any Windows XP machine I installed it on was failing, and any Vista/Win7 machine had no issues at all.
I spent the next three days trying to catch what was causing it, pulling out references, reinstalling .NET. Searching for references to this error online was futile since System.InvalidOperationException is one of those ultra-generic errors that pop up for hundreds of oddball reasons.
Finally, by happenstance, I found the cause via a single, obscure post on TechArena by a poster with only that post to his name who decided to chime in with his two cents on someone else's System.InvalidOperationException problem.
About a month ago, I replaced the program icon with a new one. I made up a nice Icon, and compiled pre-sized versions of it into a proper .ICO file from 16x16 all the way up to 256x256. I replaced the program icon with it, the links to the shortcuts in the setup program, and the icon on the main form.
THAT was the bug. Because my .ICO file had sizes larger than 64x64, Windows XP couldn't handle it as a form icon! It works fine for the program icon and for the shortcuts, but the form icons MUST be 64x64 or smaller or the program will throw System.InvalidOperationException on Form.Show(). I didn't know this was the issue since this change was over a month old and I hadn't needed to upgrade a Windows XP machine in that time. Windows Vista and 7 can handle large icon files just fine!
Solution, I made a second, WinXP compliant icon just for the main form. Problem solved. My big icon is still used for my program and shortcuts, so they look great scaling to max size in Windows Vista/7 and XP no longer crashes with a cryptic error message.
I've just started learning VB.NET with VS 9.0; a small application I'm working on keeps returning an "A first chance exception of type System InvalidOperationException occurred in System Windows Forms dll" error from the Immediate Window. The application has almost zero functionality so far, it consists of a menu strip with:
File About |Open |Save |Save As |Quit
The only code I have written opens an Open File dialog, a Save As dialog, an About window with background sound and an OK button, and the Quit button which exits.
Since there is almost no code for me to search through, I can't understand why there would be an error. The program runs just fine when I'm debugging it too.
I would like to know if its possible to check on the result 0x0 if scheduler run ok or 0x1 if it did not, but within .net, I found a post here but no resolutions so I am asking again just in case I get lucky.
When I run my project I get "An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll"
Public Class frmViewReport Dim objForm As New frmViewReport Private Sub frmViewReport_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load objForm.ViewReport("C:a2.rtp", , "@parameter1=testmter2=10")
I keep getting an eroor this error says: An unhandled exception of type 'System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException' occurred in system.windows.forms.dll Additional information: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values.
Option Strict On Public Class frmWeeklyReport Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Form
I am trying to run a vb application on windows server 2008 64 bit. it has an access database and give the error "system.invalidoperationexception the microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0 provider is not registered "
I want to create a task scheduler in vb.net and I want to use the windows schedule wizard to schedule the tasks. So, how to link or call the windows schedule wizard in vb.net?
I have been working for some time on a service that will act as a task scheduler and perform a shutdown action at one of 3 given shutdown times. Before you cringe and ask why not use the task scheduler, I should explain that permissions do not allow users to "create" scheduled tasks and therefore a creative work-around is required. In any case, I am still new to VB, but am including my code below. I want the service to check an alarm time every minute and launch a shutdown application (in the user's context - if logged in) if that time is NOW.
I am running a vb.net win application from windows task scheduler. I would like to show a messagebox from my application in one scenario. How can I accomplish this. Code is getting executed, but messagebox is not getting displayed in my screen.
I have a VB program that is executed each morning at 4 AM by Task Scheduler. If the program returns anything other than a zero result, I would like Task Scheduler to run it again. The Task Scheduler sees my return code in the "Last Run Result" field, but does not invoke the "If task fails, restart every:" action.
creating small task scheduler in vb.net using in built library of vb.net . " I checked out Codeproject's ScheduleTask.dll solution (vb)"But problem is i want to create using inbuilt library of vb.net not using solution in vb.
I'm wanting to create a small application that will allow me to schedule a machine to shutdown at a specific time. Any suggestions on how I can make this .exe run at a specific time besides using the Task Scheduler?
If I create a scheduled task for my vb.net program, and run it under another user, and it runs when logged off, as long as the user has full rights, will the winforms application be able to call web services over the web?
It is a funny problem and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered the same problem using vs 2010 express on Vista Business. I can't tell if the App is running because I do not want to risk corrupting the sql 2008 express database.
All of a sudden, when I built my project, it wouldn't read any changes, then all of a sudden, this error started popping up!The description of the error is:An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.and it pops up when the following code is executed:
frmMain.Show()
on the line prior to it I have the code
frmStats.Show()
and that pops up no problem.These errors happened suddenly, and all I was changing in the code (which was in frmMain) were just a few changes to labels (activated by an event).
I get the following expeption when trying to switch from one form to another (click event):
InvalidOperationException was unhandled
An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture. Make sure "WindowsApplication1.CarDimensions.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "Driver Seat Configuration" at compile time, or that all the satellite assemblies required are loadable and fully signed.
How can i embed one form correctly into the another?
