How To Make .exe Run At Specific Time Besides Using Task Scheduler
Jun 8, 2011
I'm wanting to create a small application that will allow me to schedule a machine to shutdown at a specific time. Any suggestions on how I can make this .exe run at a specific time besides using the Task Scheduler?
I have an app that relies on a database. Basically, users are checking in and checking out items and the database keeps track of all that.My boss wants a notification system to email us when a item is overdue. I already have most of this figured out.I was able to create a service and have it read registry values that the app sets and then it reads the check outdate from the database. If it's overdue, an email is sent out.
But, I've only done testing for 10 seconds at a time. I'm currently using a System.Threading.Timer to run every 10 seconds. That was only a test, it won't actually be that way.Instead, I want the task to run once every day. I was thinking to just have it run every hour, but if it runs every hour, then we'll be constantly bombarded by emails when an item is overdue. And sending it every "x" hours brings it's own issues and isn't ideal.Normally, I'd run a task via the Windows Task Scheduler, but the app has to read the database. I guess I could create a separate app and launch it via the task scheduler, have it complete the tasks and then close when done.
I would like to know if its possible to check on the result 0x0 if scheduler run ok or 0x1 if it did not, but within .net, I found a post here but no resolutions so I am asking again just in case I get lucky.
I want to create a task scheduler in vb.net and I want to use the windows schedule wizard to schedule the tasks. So, how to link or call the windows schedule wizard in vb.net?
I have been working for some time on a service that will act as a task scheduler and perform a shutdown action at one of 3 given shutdown times. Before you cringe and ask why not use the task scheduler, I should explain that permissions do not allow users to "create" scheduled tasks and therefore a creative work-around is required. In any case, I am still new to VB, but am including my code below. I want the service to check an alarm time every minute and launch a shutdown application (in the user's context - if logged in) if that time is NOW.
I am running a vb.net win application from windows task scheduler. I would like to show a messagebox from my application in one scenario. How can I accomplish this. Code is getting executed, but messagebox is not getting displayed in my screen.
I have a VB program that is executed each morning at 4 AM by Task Scheduler. If the program returns anything other than a zero result, I would like Task Scheduler to run it again. The Task Scheduler sees my return code in the "Last Run Result" field, but does not invoke the "If task fails, restart every:" action.
creating small task scheduler in vb.net using in built library of vb.net . " I checked out Codeproject's ScheduleTask.dll solution (vb)"But problem is i want to create using inbuilt library of vb.net not using solution in vb.
If I create a scheduled task for my vb.net program, and run it under another user, and it runs when logged off, as long as the user has full rights, will the winforms application be able to call web services over the web?
I have an import program which I run manually everyday. I want to automate it but i'm not sure whether to make it a windows service or add it as a scheduled task. It needs to run at 11:00 and again at 16:00. Please advise
I'm upgrading from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm using VB in VS 2008. Under XP, I used the Task Scheduler to run a program at 3pm every weekday, and it ran fine. Now in W7, when the Task Scheduler runs the programs, it encounters an exception when it gets to the code MyForm.ShowDialog(). The error is:
System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="Showing a modal dialog box or form when the application is not running in UserInteractive mode is not a valid operation. Specify the ServiceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly style to display a notification from a service application." Source="System.Windows.Forms"
[code].....
When I run the program from a shortcut with the same parameters as in the Task Scheduler (i.e. the shortcut runs the .exe file with some paramters after it), it runs fine, so I'm guessing there is some setting in the Windows 7 Task Scheduler I need to set, but I can't find it. I've tried checking "Run with highest privledges" (and unchecking it), but that didn't help. I have tried it with the "Hidden" box unchecked and checked and that didn't help. I've also tried it with "Configure for" set either way (Windows 7 or Vista). So how do I get rid of this error?
I have set up several tasks on a new installation of Windows 7 and they are working as expected. But when I attempted to run a batch file it fails. It works fine from the command line and I can run it from the scheduler on Windows XP manually (although not on the timer yet). What is about batch files that I need to know to make them run from the Task Scheduler?
I only know how to add your program to windows task scheduler to schedule automatic execution but what if you wanted to have a particular thread run on a weekly schedule. Someone mentioned windows powershell for all these types of scripting; but it seems too hard to learn on short notice.
It is a funny problem and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered the same problem using vs 2010 express on Vista Business. I can't tell if the App is running because I do not want to risk corrupting the sql 2008 express database.
So I wrote a VB.net project in Visual studio.I have a scheduled task that is set to run the program every morning at 10AM. If I use windows explorer and double click the application, it runs fine.If I open task scheduler, open the task properties, and browse to the application, then choose run, the program fails, due to Runtime exceptions.I know I have the path entered correctly, since I can debug the instance when it crashes from the task scheduler. VS2010 pulls up my source code. The exception is System.IO.FileNotFoundException, remember, it works fine when I double click the app. If attach a debugger to the process after it is executed from the task scheduler, I can then restart the debugger, and Voila!, The application runs fine.
I found some great code on capturing webcam images but the problem is the client PC will need to initiate the communication to this server (click Connect to server IP). This is like 2 way communication. How can i do something like this (door Kiosk system):when a visitor press a button on the LCD that come along a web cam (this will be the server), it will send the signal the client PC that is installed with the application i've created (window form) and pop up the images to the client PC (more like a 1 way communication). This image is captured through the web cam on the server to capture the visotor's image waiting outside of the door. How to do this?I'm really stuck as i'm not familiar with window API programming yet.
1) how to do the mentioned 1 way communication? possible in .NET?
2) how to make my application to be at the tray icon just next to the time displayed on the right bottom corner of the task bar? When a visitor press a button o the server, it will pop up a window form on the client PC showing the image captured via the server's webcam outside of the door.
Now what I want to do is, when I Enter something on Textbox1 and click Button1, Label1 should be visible and blinking.
Label1.Visible = True
But, when I type something on Textbox1 again (before even hitting Button1), Label1 should not be visible anymore and continues this way.Another way is to make Label1 visible for a specific time, say 5 seconds (blinking) and goes invisible. I prefer the first one though I would love to learn both?
automatic scheduler apart from creating windows service in .net or OS batch scheduler?I 'm aware of this two, Is there a 3rd way to create automated process in .net.I having facing limitations in creating windows service like I have semi admin rights so it doesn't allow me to install windows service also I can't view the windows service.
I have been asked to create a program to create schedules for the Hospital where my wife works. Right now they do it in excel with a few macros. One question before I start, can multiple dates be selected from a DTP. Say for the month of July, my wife has to work the 3,4,5, the 10,11,12, the 17,18,19 and the 24,25,26. Can I select multiple dates for the month?
I have created a database in SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. Can I write a program in VB.net express to take a daily backup at a specified time? What code do I need to write?
I need to have a windows service that capable of monitoring constantly whether my application is running or not. If not, the windows service will RUN it for me.
I find it hard to manage tracking my time on multiple taks..esp when it comes time to charge How would i track time? ie if i click on a start button, then click on a stop button...how would i work out diff in hour mm secs....
I want to verify if the current system time falls within the specified time range between 7:30pm - 9:00pm. If it falls within the specified time range then display a message.
what I would like to do is create a program that runs in the task bar next to the time. What I want this to do is listen for the key stroke combo of CTRL-ALT-T no matter what program they are in. When they hit this key stroke I want the program to do is hide the task bar on the bottom of the screen. you know how you can change the hight to two rows one row and so on but you can also drag it down so it has no rows and can't see it. Then when they hit CTRL-ALT-T it will then display the task bar with what ever the hight wa set to. Just don't know what direction to go to do this.
I have a program that allows a user to select a program to run at a certain time for a specific amount of time all choosen by the user. Everything works with the exception of if my program has launched the other program, my program become non-responsive. Meaning I am not able to look at that window again. Not that one really needs too, because when time is up my program closes the program it opened, then closes itself. I just want to be able to see my program when the other program is running. how to do this and perhaps drop me some links, that would be wonderful. This is what I have coded, but like I stated there are no code errors.
I'm trying to make a program that will allow people to queue certain tasks at certain intervals. (i.e. the task is done every 15 minutes, etc.) They can make as many tasks as they want, at whatever intervals they want. How can I possibly make a task queue? Like, how can I queue up code that I already have made to be run every so and so often, according to what the user inputs? And, if 2 tasks are started at the same time, they will both still be done, it's just that one will be done as soon as the first one is complete.
