I find it hard to manage tracking my time on multiple taks..esp when it comes time to charge How would i track time? ie if i click on a start button, then click on a stop button...how would i work out diff in hour mm secs....

I've just completed my first multi-threaded task under windows. Historically I am a VMS Engineer. You could multithread in drivers in VMS but VMS never had formalized threads. Which means it never had applications threads. Threads will become increasing important in the future. I thought this maybe a good time to discuss them. Not having access to sources hurts in terms of the amount of depth one can achieve in Windows. Some of the topics for this thread might be...compute resource regulation, how to do multi-threading and of course things to watch out for.

Basically, users are checking in and checking out items and the database keeps track of all that.My boss wants a notification system to email us when a item is overdue. I already have most of this figured out.I was able to create a service and have it read registry values that the app sets and then it reads the check outdate from the database. If it's overdue, an email is sent out.
But, I've only done testing for 10 seconds at a time. I'm currently using a System.Threading.Timer to run every 10 seconds. That was only a test, it won't actually be that way.Instead, I want the task to run once every day. I was thinking to just have it run every hour, but if it runs every hour, then we'll be constantly bombarded by emails when an item is overdue. And sending it every "x" hours brings it's own issues and isn't ideal.Normally, I'd run a task via the Windows Task Scheduler, but the app has to read the database. I guess I could create a separate app and launch it via the task scheduler, have it complete the tasks and then close when done.
I'm wanting to create a small application that will allow me to schedule a machine to shutdown at a specific time. Any suggestions on how I can make this .exe run at a specific time besides using the Task Scheduler?

What I want this to do is listen for the key stroke combo of CTRL-ALT-T no matter what program they are in. When they hit this key stroke I want the program to do is hide the task bar on the bottom of the screen. you know how you can change the hight to two rows one row and so on but you can also drag it down so it has no rows and can't see it. Then when they hit CTRL-ALT-T it will then display the task bar with what ever the hight wa set to. Just don't know what direction to go to do this.
View 3 RepliesI found some great code on capturing webcam images but the problem is the client PC will need to initiate the communication to this server (click Connect to server IP). This is like 2 way communication.How can i do something like this (door Kiosk system):when a visitor press a button on the LCD that come along a web cam (this will be the server), it will send the signal the client PC that is installed with the application i've created (window form) and pop up the images to the client PC (more like a 1 way communication). This image is captured through the web cam on the server to capture the visotor's image waiting outside of the door. How to do this?I'm really stuck as i'm not familiar with window API programming yet.

ok.. just as it sounds.. I'm kinda making a document portal app for work.. has 4 list boxes going to 4 different drive locations.. for cosmetic reasons I want only the last box you clicked in to show a selected item.. so if you selected box 1 item and it was hilighted and then you went to box 2 and selected something I wanted box 1 to then dissapear.
I have some code written to handle this.. but its not working so well.. since I use the SelectedIndexChanged trigger to fire off another piece of code to unselect all the other windows.. those listboxes fire their triggers also because I have to call lstWord. SelectedIndex = -1 to make it not have something selected anymore.. and when you do that.. it calls its SelectedIndexChanged and ends up deselecting everything.. so wasnt sure if anyone had done something like this before.. seems like something that would have been done before.. but as you can imagine searching the web for "multi list box select only one at a time" or something similar..gives you some strange results..
I want to create for a game an external program that can give advice about what to do but I have no idea where to start.First off all I am not an unexpericend programmer but simply never did something like this before.Its about the game called PoxNora, this is some kind of advanced chess with so called 'runes' that can level, you can upgrade and collect.
The game send data to the client while you are playing. This data(is what i expect) contains information about what you are playing and what your opponent is playing. I know there are programs(forgot the names and cant find them that fast anymore ) that can listen to proccesses and detect network packages(wich is usually done for cheating in a lot of games). I want to do the same for this game and then let the program give advice.
Example of advice even when you dont know the game.I have 2 so called 'runes' and the enemy has 1. I want my program to calculate if it is better to attack firstly with one unit, maybe it causes debuffs, and then with the other one to maximize the damage output.
However it will take some time to create a program like this I really want to make it. I can create all those calculations myself but have no idea where to start with the network part.
Suppose I have 4 different forms form1-4. If I open form1 from form 2 and close form2 how can I know that form2 opened form1 and not other form. Is there any function that does this or we need to pass the form_name during the transition and which one would be efficient.

Originally it was written without threading, but now the requirements have changed and I need to collect data simultaneously from 4-6 sites at a time. I have never used threading, TPL, etc. Can anybody tell me where to begin so that I can concurrently run multiple collections?

However i need to be able to stop the expression when I enter a stop date so it would look like this "start date 1 to today= x amount of days" but i need to be able to add a stop date to end the counter. and if they go down again start date 2 to today and add number of days from start date 1.

View 2 RepliesI have an Excel based algo-trading app that needs to take in lots of real-time data, and make trading decisions based on the calculations driven by the data. It is not one of those "read-only" stock ticker kinda spreadsheets.I created a COM object with VB.NET that runs in its own thread space which collects data from a socket, and when the data is read it raises an Event with data attached. In Excel VBA, the event handler parses the data, puts them to the right places on the spreadsheet to feed calculations (so far it sounds like a stock ticker app), and then, based on the results of the various calculations it does something.The problem is that when the user starts to click around the spreadsheet while there is large amount of data coming, the event handler's cell updating breaks apart. If the app is left alone without user action, it stands well. My frustration comes from not understanding what happens to the main thread when a user clicks around. Either the event handler blocks the user action, or the user action blocks the event handler (under which case I will put in some queuing facility). But I just don't see how user action can break the code (like causing VBA to stop executing)

What I want to know is this: How do I make a simple name and address tracker file that I can enter data and save it as a file. The book does not cover this proceedure but It is what I want to do.
IE: Start VB2005 start new windows app. Name (whatever) drag 2 label's and 2 textbox's and one button for saving data entry. I want this program to enter name in textbox1 (press enter) then enter address in textbox2 (press enter) then save file (whatever name) when you click the button.
I'm adding multi-threading facilities for the first time. I have a function that is wrapped to be run in a separated thread. This function retrieves data (text) from a combobox and it works for sure without multi-threading.
When I call it as multi-threaded, I get the following error when I try to retrieve the data from the cmobobox: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'cmb1stBL' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
It looks like a restriction of thread-safety... I assume that the child thread cannot read from his parent, to make sure that he doesn't change his parent data. So how can I read the data from the combobox? Should I read the comoboxbox data before calling the child thread?

View 2 RepliesI have an ASP.NET application with a SQL Server back end. I am storing all my dates in UTC format and doing the appropriate conversions to the local time zone of the browser viewing it. One of the pages asks for a start date and end date (no times).
I am taking the start date and setting the time to 00:00:00 hours (midnight) and I'm taking the End time and adding a time of 23:59:59, so that the date range covers the whole day. Now what I'm trying to do is do a SQL query to do a search for records in this date range. The problem is, the data in SQL is in UTC time and the user is typing their dates and times in their local date and times. My quickest solution was to convert the date and time to UTC, then search the records. However, by doing this, I am to believe ASP.NET converts the given time and date to UTC based on the server time zone. How can I convert a date and time to UTC time based on the time zone of the user?
I am having fun working with System.Threading.Tasks. Many of the code samples I see, however, look something like so:

That's the extent of the sample.Tasks implement IDisposable, so obviously I'm supposed to dispose of them, but what if I just want to "Fire and Forget"?If I don't dispose, will I leak threads/handles/memory/karma?Am I using tasks "wrong"? (Should just use a delegate and leave tasks alone?)

My application displays a Splash Screen. In the Main form load event , we show another form in which user has to be select something. On the basis of that selection , the main form is loaded.
The scenario in which the main form is not shown in the task bar is :
1. Application runs , Splash screen is displayed.
2. a new window is shown to user to select something. this window comes over the splash screen.
3. Clicks ok on that window.The window is closed . Only splash screen is showing.
4.Now click on the space outside the Splash screen , the splash screen goes in backgound.
5. The main form is loaded. It comes for a moment in task bar but does not stay there. when i do alt+tab , it is there .
I have a MDI WinForms application that can perform several tasks. Each task is running as a backgroundWorker.What is the good approach to control the running threads:check whether the specific thread is running stop specific thread ?For example it shouldn't be possible to run the same task simultaneously.May be I need a separate class where I can store isTaskRunning variable?
