Windows Service Access To User Files?

Aug 1, 2010

I've been developing in .NET (VB, C++, C#) for a number of years, but I am finally creating my first service application (in VB). I need to read/write to a file contained within a user's documents. As a service is not associated with a particular user, would a service have access to a user's documents? ...regardless if that user is signed on or not?

Use Windows Search Service Instead Of The Old Indexing Service To Index Files?

Jul 7, 2009

In the past I had the indexing service installed on a Windows Server 2003 and used it to index files for my website. I did this by executing an OleDbCommand with a query and a connection string. How do I accomplish the same thing with the new "Windows Search Service" (Windows Server 2008) by using VB.NET? Does this work the same way so that I only need to change the Provider name which has been "MSIDXS.1" up to now? Case true, what is the new Provider name?

Windows Service To Copy Files?

Jul 19, 2011

I have written a service to run an exe. What I have also tried to do is check if the file is present on the local computer, and if not copy it from a networked drive to the local computer.

If File.Exists("\\static1\software\testapp.exe") = True Then
File.Copy("\\static1\software\testapp.exe", "C:\Program Files\Testing\testapp.exe")
End If

I have previously ensured that the directory exists. When I run this as a service, it doesn't work. No errors are thrown up, but the file is not copied. When I put this into a windows forms application it works fine.

I have used:

Imports System.IO

In the header. why this won't work?

I have also tried:

My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile("\\static1\software\testapp.exe", "C:\Program Files\Testing\testapp.exe")

And that also does not work.I am trying to run this on Windows XP Professional.

Starting Windows Service As Standard User

Aug 4, 2010

My app (which runs ok as a standard user) requires updates to be installed, but I don't want to have to input the administrator username/password each time nor do I want to increase user privileges to administrator.

I have a windows service which handles the downloading of updates etc (running as Local System) but the start command needs to come from the main app (running as a standard user). This is not permitted and I get Access Denied.

I understand why this is happening but is there an alternative way to achieve this? I want to handle program updates as the standard user without using ClickOnce or installing to a non Program Files folder.

Windows Service Detecting User Log Off Event?

Aug 15, 2011

Recently while I was playing with VS 2008(VB), I have created an application for folder sync purpose... which is working fine. Then, I have created a windows service that does the same thing and it is also working fine(from application perspective). But, I have been trying to add some additional functionality to that new service. It keeps on running as long as System is ON.

But I would like to change the functionality to... as soon as user logs off Service should STOP, and should START when user logs into that PC. I tried to find some useful info online(related to my task) and all I could come up with was to add OnSessionChange(...) method to the service. But for some reason it is not working out for me(when I've logged off or other system events such as 'system lock').

Windows Service Not Able To Read Current User's Registry?

Sep 9, 2009

I developed a windows service project using vb.net and windows service is installed with logon account as admin's user name and password. Target of windows service is to read the pst file path location from windows registry for currently logged user by accessing the following registry key

"HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfilesOutlook52a407cf2e436a4d8fe252d1d257465501f6700".

The problem is , windows service can able to read the admin pst file path location if admin is logged in windows. When other user logged in windows, service is not able to read currently logged user's pst file path location from registry because of windows service is configured with admin user name and password. so it always reads admin's pst file location.

Windows Service To Import Data From CSV Files Dropped Into A Directory?

Jul 26, 2011

I am writing a Windows service to import data from CSV files dropped into a directory. One of the steps is to load an XML file with validation rules which I load into a List(Of T). It will pull the data, and then I have it pass the list to a class that monitors the folder and processes the files. After that I clear the list and read in the next file configuration. Now I have noticed that the validation rules aren't matching up and it seems that the list is being passed as a reference type even though the signature is of a value type.Is there anything I can do to get around this?

[Code]...

So here when I pass it, at first it will have 3 validation rules in the new ImportService class I created, but when I call fields.Clear(), it wipes out the class member of the ImportService class.

If there are not, should I use a file for both the service and the web app where both can read and write on, like a settings file in xml or are there better methods? Is there a way to get the messages in the corresponding eventlog, how do I access them?

Windows Service Won't Select From Access Mdb File?

Jan 5, 2012

I'm trying to do a simple select query from a MS access database from my service. Has anyone managed to do this in the past using their Jet eninge?

I had originally debugged and tested the code in a windows form and it worked fine. Once I moved the code into a windows service and installed it, it bombs out and doesn't generate any errors.

Thing is, I just found a .mdb file on the net so not entirely sure of the database version. I'm running office 2007 and read that if you used the .accdb version on a machine that didn't have access 2007 installed (which is going to be 99% likely), you had to install some drivers etc. in order for it to work. That is not an option unfortunately which is why I went with the old .mdb that could use Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 without any drivers to be installed.

Do I need to import something into this project to get this to work? I've attached the code below. I've added a comment after the problematic line.

Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection
Dim dbProvider As String
Dim dbSource As String

VS2010 .NET And Windows 7 Access Denied On Writing To Or Creating Files In Project Files Folder?

May 22, 2012

Ok I know this question has been asked to death but I still have not seen a good answer. I have created an application in VS2010 using VB.NET. In my application I have an error log that is an XML file located in the Public gstLocalErrorLogLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "ErrorLog"that gets written to in the event of an error so I can trouble shoot application easier. My application also downloads files from our FTP site and puts the files in Public gstLocalDownloadLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "download"So I have files that get read and written to as well and created and deleted all in the Application.StartupPath which is either "c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" or "c:Program Files (x86)(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" depending on 32bit or 64bit Windows 7.

After creating the setup I install it on my test machine that have both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.Everything in the application works great till I have to write to, delete or creat a file in those directories above. I know it is an access issue and the UAC. This will get installed on numerous systems so the options I have seen to change file or folder permission on the computers manually is not an option. What has to happen is after I install the application it just works like when you install it on XP. Some post have suggested that you us a user with administrator privilages or group which is all fine and dandy but the user I have used to test the application has all of that.

So what I am asking is how do you create an application with VS2010 in VB.NET that after creating a setup package and installing on Windows 7 will just work with out "Access to the path c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File) is denied." If I have to install this on 100 Windows 7 computers it has to be a concreate no manually doing anything just install and work like when we installed on XP.

"Underlying Connection Was Closed" Error On Windows Service But Only Occurs When A User Is Not RDP'd Into The Server?

I have a windows service I created that checks for data to post to an off site webservice over SSL. The service checks every 10 seconds for data to send, if there is data it opens a connection to the remote webservice, and closes the connection after 120 seconds (still checking for data to send during this time). The service works fine if a user is RDP'd into the server, but as soon as no one is logged on and the service attempts to push data, I receive the following error:"The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send."I have tried running the service as a local service, network service, under my login, and under a service account, but nothing seems to work.
