Working With Variables Between .Net & Javascript?

Mar 14, 2011

The issue at hand is this. I want VB.Net code to be able to talk with Javascript code, specifically, passing variable values back and forth.A web page contains several DIV elements that actually can open and close kinda like a dropdownlist in it's functionality (there are 8 of these). Initially, when the page loads, these DIV's are closed. However, when a user opens a DIV or multiple DIV's, their are various textbox controls they can make changes to. When any changes are made, they click the submit button to save the changes. Then, when the page reloads, I want the program to remember which DIVs were open so after the page finishes loading, those DIVs that had changes made to them will be opened instead of closed. What would be the best way to handle this. Should it be done all in the code-behind file or javascript alone or both?

Extract Data From JavaScript Variables?

May 9, 2012

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and my software will be a Windows Forms Application.

I know it's possible to retrieve URL source codes, slice and dice them either through VB.NET or RegEx but that only applies to text/code that are in plain text like HTML code. But how do you extract code from JavaScript that in the downloaded source code doesn't display the data inside the variables, but instead the actual variables?

Below I have an example code of JavaScript variables inside a downloaded .HTML source code that, when the webpage is loaded, displays the information/data contained inside these variables in the web browser. But the data itself isn't "downloaded" or stored in the source code.

So my question is: How do you extract/retrieve the data from within those JavaScript variables?

<td>
<div class="showUserText">
<div class="outerRatingBody" style="display:none;" >

[Code]....

Is it possible through VB.NET to get what ever is inside those variables?

Javascript - Function PageLoad Not Working?

Aug 31, 2011

I have the following code which I want to run when the page first loads and then again when an update panel (asp.net) is run. Therefore I need to use function pageLoad() rather than document.ready.

function pageLoad() {
$(".zoomImage").each( function() {
$("<img src='"+$(this).attr("src").replace("-thumb.jpg",".jpg")+"' />").appendTo(".howitworksText > div");
});
};

Problem is I can only get this working with document.ready - so therefore not when the updatepanel is run.

Not sure why this isn't working. There is no js error, but it just doesn't set the display property to "block". If I remove the inner most if statement, the display property for the div control is changed when the last radio button is selected from the group.

Javascript - WebSockets Handshake Not Working

May 5, 2012

Im trying to get a connection between a JavaScript WebSocket and a TCP Server/Client applicat written in VisualBasic .Net . My problem is that the handshake fails. I do get a handshake request from the local website, but it does not accept my response.

The code of the JavaScript file:

<script type="text/javascript">
var ws;
function connect() {

[Code]....

I now get the correct Sec-WebSocket-Accept String (dXOwyU6vuIMy61iK64Xi0VrmyOQ=), anyway the WebSocket seems not to handle the handshake response. I tried debugging it with the Chrome Developer Tools, but I don't get usefull information from it.

C# - JavaScript : Returning NULL In IE But Working In FireFox?

Jun 9, 2009

I have this function correctly linked in an external .js file...

function SubmitAge(age, UpdatePanelID, HiddenAgeID) {
$get(HiddenAgeID).value = age;
__doPostBack(UpdatePanelID);
}

and am calling it like this from an onClick of an a href="#" ... html tag (tags removed, please scroll right as stackoverflow has the greatest difficulty in displaying simple content, 7th display related edit, thanks stackoverflow)

a href="#" onclick="SubmitAge(24, 'ctl00_MainContent_arFrom_upAgeRange', 'MainContent_arFrom_HiddenAge')" runat="server" 24 /a

yet, i am getting this error, and its being called on the first line of the SubmitAge function (line with $get(HiddenAgeID)... etc...)

Error:Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'null' is null or not an object

i've copied and pasted my WATCH windows in visual studio .net (vs2010 beta 2 using vb.net & c#) while the execution breaks inside teh SubmitAge .js function...

age 53 Number
UpdatePanelID "ctl00_MainContent_arTo_upAgeRange" String
HiddenAgeID Undefined identifier Error

Why on earth is HiddenAgeId, clearly passed just like UpdatePanelID, is returning an "Undefined identifier Error"???

edit: Update: turns out it works perfectly (as it should) when i load it up in FireFox, but has the resulting error in Internet Explorer, this is not a browser compatibility issue, it should also work in IE, but it doesn't!

Javascript - WebMethod Not Working When Returning Relatively Large String

Dec 9, 2011

I am using Virtual Basic with ASP.NET in Visual Studio 2008. I am using Webmethod to communicate from/to the server with the client. Data can be queried and returned in small amount, but when I try get a relatively large amount of data, it's returning me a Server 500 error. My data is 226561 character long, so it's not that large, but it's relatively larger than my other working testing set, which are about 10k character long.

JavaScript:
PageMethods.my_func("context", success);
function success(result, userContext, methodName) {

[code]....

Is there anything I can change to increase WebMethod returned string length limit? Is there even a length limit or is it some other problem I could not see?

Javascript - __doPostBack Not Working In Safari Or Firefox, Works In IE

Jun 19, 2012

in my asp.net application, two buttons call a javascript function called refreshView, below is the function refreshView.

function RefreshView() {
__doPostBack('ButtonApply', '')
window.parent.location.href = "dashboardtree.aspx"
}

In IE, this is working correctly, but in firefox and safari the page refreshes (due to the window.parent.location) - but never calls the doPostBack (i was able to tell this using tracepoint and the sub that is called stores values to the database, the values are not being stored as well, sub is never hit). Below is the first line of the sub.

Private Sub ButtonApply_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ButtonApply.Click

Can anyone see why this would not work? I figured I could always replace the doPostBack with pageMethods and create a new sub/function - but I'd like to complete this the way it currently is.

VS 2010 Working With Boolean Variables?

Jun 16, 2011

I am working with a multi form project. The long and short of it is that when i originally load form 1 ... all bool variables are false. Once i load form 2 and perform my operations some of my bool variables will be set to true.

I need to have some sort of object to listen for those changes. What i have come up with so far is the following. Private Sub patient_frm_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

[Code]...

The if statement will work but i need a way to make it keep looking for changes in the boolean variables.

Define Some Global Variables Of A Class - Variables Occupy Memory?

Mar 23, 2012

I define some global variables of a class as follows:

Private Class MyClass
Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....

But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.

Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)

Multithreading: Reading/setting Variables, And Passing Variables?

Question 2: I noticed while using, AddressOf _Function_, variables cannot be passed; what would be an efficient solution to this?

Question 3: While using multithreading is it required to invoke before setting variables, or only form properties?

Question 4: While using System.Net.Sockets is it safe/efficient to use Application.DoEvents while waiting for new data; or would be using a Do While loop be fine without DoEvents since the action would be multithreaded? Note: there can be up to 2000-3000 sockets in use at a time.

VS 2008 Cannot Seem To Get A Working Filter In Working Order

Jun 18, 2009

It appears that my favorite thing in the world is tackling projects that are beyond my current knowledge and abilities. I have a little project that I am working on which is a simple image viewer stocked with (upon completion) your standard Load..., Next/Previous, Zoom In/Out, Actual Size, and Full Screen capabilities. However, I am running into a few snags:

(1) I've been able to get my "Load..." button to display a file dialog box, but I cannot seem to get a working filter (with which only image file types are allowed to be selected) in working order.

(2) I have a PictureBox object (entitled PictureBox1) that displays the image selected via the file dialog box, but it loads images in their full size (1:1/100% zoomed) state without scrollbars, etc. to allow me to navigate the loaded image. I would like to have it load the image, initially, to fit within the dimensions of PictureBox1 and from there be able to zoom in/out via my "Zoom In/Out" and "Actual Size" buttons and be able to scroll if the zoom level is beyond the dimensions of PictureBox1.

(3) It dawned on me that I haven't the faintest idea how to get my "Next/Previous" buttons to allow the user (me) to navigate, in succession, the images contained in the folder in which the currently loaded image is stored. [code]

If it is deemed that this thread is inappropriately requesting help, I ask that it be locked/deleted quickly as I recognize that this is a large community with many discussions going without need of unwelcome posts.

Asp.net - JavaScript Can't Get/set Cookie In Ie7

Sep 14, 2011

I have to store, in 2 cookie dictionary/keyed cookie, a user's preference for hiding certain sections of each form on the app. It would appear that IE7 has reached some limit for the number or size of the cookie in javascript. I mean that the cookies are only inaccessible on the client-side js, but can be read just fine in our asp.net/vb code-behind.

The functions that need to read the value of these cookies must be on client side because I can't run a postback everytime the function needs to update the cookie. How should I go about getting and setting the cookie without triggering postback? I thought about storing the value of the cookie onload in a textbox, but I don't know when I would read it back and update the cookie.
