It is possible to catch an exception and throw a new exception which wraps the first exception as an inner exception: [URL] Also, if I call a function and it throws a certain error, but I catch it, will the calling code's catch handler execute? If so, and it is of a higher exception type, is this not wrapping the exception? eg I can throw exception ex of type IndexOutOfRange, log it but rethrow, catch a higher up exception and do something, or I can throw a new exception and wrap an inner exception like:

View 6 RepliesI'm developing a very simple app that does nothing more than launch two other apps. I'm developing this under the .NET 2.0 framework for WinCE 5.0 in VS2005.No matter what I do, I keep getting file not found exceptions not handled, and the program crashes. (Yes I should probably have a try/catch block, but this isn't the issue.)
Here's some code
fullPath = Path.GetFullPath(drivePath)
Me.Label1.Font = New System.Drawing.Font("Tahoma", 6.0!, System.Drawing.FontStyle.Regular)
Me.Label1.Text = fullPath & strDrivePath
Now, the label change here is not important, I only do this to output the full path of the directory, and strDrivePath is "whatever.exe"
If Directory.Exists(fullPath) Then
If File.Exists(fullPath & strDrivePath) Then
Me.Label1.Text = "EXISTS!!!"
[code].....
The irritating thing is after getting and displaying the full path (I know it's there) I check with the first IF to prove to the program it's there. No problem.I then use the second IF to prove to the program that the executable is there, and change the label output on screen to prove to myself the code is executed. The label changes. The file is there.
Then when I run the program, File not found exception. It's driving me insane. I've tried in multiple OSes (Vista and CE 5.0), I've tried in directories with spaces and no spaces, I've tried using Process.Start() and setting up the file details through the info command.I've tried putting a path in there directly instead of using variables. I've tried wrapping the whole kit and kabodle in quotes like this Shell("" & fullPath & strDrivePath & "" ) and like this Shell("""" & fullPath & strDrivePath & """").I've searched high and low on forums around the globe, including multiple threads here and I just cannot get it to work.

View 6 RepliesI am using Visual Studio 2008 on Windows XP SP3. User has Windows 7 Pro (32 bit). The IO code below works for me. The read code works for user, but the write code only works for new files. If the user tries to overwrite a current data file, then no data is written to disk. I have done all the usual IO checking (valid file name, etc.) and have excluded it from my same code. In my app, FileSave and FileSaveAs both call WriteDataFile(FullFileName). Any reasons why FIleSave would work on Windows XP, but not on Windows 7 Pro (32 bit)?

View 1 RepliesI have an issue where I need to load a fixed-length file. Process some of the fields, generate a few others, and finally output a new file. The difficult part is that the file is of part numbers and some of the products are superceded by other products (which can also be superceded). What I need to do is follow the superceded trail to get information I need to replace some of the fields in the row I am looking at. So how can I best handle about 200000 lines from a file and the need to move up and down within the given products? I thought about using a collection to hold the data or a dataset, but I just don't think this is the right way.[code]....
View 1 RepliesI am working on a program with multiple collections related to one another for a school project. Each collection needs to have its own defined properties and have the objects written (1 per line) to a text file.
I have all of that working.
When reading the comma-separated line from the file, I want to place one of the properties of the object in a listbox (so that all the objects' names will show up in the listbox). I think I have this part figured out...
My problem is that when you click on the name in the listbox, I would like multiple text boxes to be populated with the appropriate, corresponding properties of the particular object in the collection...is there a way for this to be done?

View 2 RepliesWhat my program does is load a file (password list), then progressively reads each line of text in the file whilst writing each line to a new file. After X amount of lines have been written, it should start writing the lines of text to a new document until the initial password list has been split into X amount of password lists. The problem I have is that after hours of tweaking, all I can get it to do is write either blank ocuments, or write all of the lines to only one file. I really need it to be able to split into multiple files, preferably at runtime rather than loading a whole text document into the program in a textbox or array then writing it to new files.Below is the source:

View 1 Repliesfor the program I am creating I want the computer to check if the configuration file has been created or not. I wrote this function to do that but I don't how to handle a file exception. Here's my code currently but obviously it returns an error if the configuration file doesn't already exist. So how do I add a check for an exception?

Dim StreamReader As New IO.StreamReader("C:\VRAI\Conf.txt")

On an error (thrown exception), the file being processed should be moved to the folder for files with errors (app.config setting).
The problem: The only way that I can of handling this is to have a nested Try/Catch inside of the main Try/Catch to try to move the file, that way if the move fails, another exception is thrown. I know that I can do my best to make sure the directory exists, rights are given, but since it is a network drive... I just know an error is bound to happen at some point.
Example
Try
(Do Some Logic, but an error happens)
Catch ex As Exception
Try
[Code]....
Actually that came out even more horrible than what I was thinking it would look like.
How should I really be trying to handle a possible error occuring in the catch, so that I can still move files and try to call my event?
