Allow Users To Download A File?
Apr 15, 2011
I'm using the following code to allow users to download a file.
Dim myFile As FileInfo = New FileInfo(strPath & strFile)
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" & _
Replace(myFile.Name, ".resources", ""))
Response.AddHeader("Content-Length", myFile.Length.ToString())
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
Response.WriteFile(myFile.FullName)
This method has the annoying problem that any code after this line does not execute correctly.
It pretty ancient code, so I'm guessing there are probably better ways to do this these days.

I want to download thousands of files from the web and save them locally. What is the most efficient way? It is important the failures timeout within 10 seconds.
Is there a better way to stream one stream into another? Maybe a smaller buffer, like 1024 bytes at a time, is more efficient for large files?
Dim w_req As System.Net.HttpWebRequest = CType(System.Net.HttpWebRequest.Create("http://blah.blah.blah/blah.html"), System.Net.HttpWebRequest)

Reading a .txt file in VB.net. My file path is C:UsersMyLilMulePepeDocumentsVisual Studio 2008Projectscurtain_calls.txt.
This is my line of Dim LoanOptionsFile As String = "C:UsersMyLilMulePepeDocumentsVisual Studio 2008Projectscurtain_calls.txt"
I can read the file when I run the program, but how do I write the file path so that someone else can download my program and file and read the file on their system?

I created an application that when a user logs onto their Windows account, a Form is displayed outlining the current Computer Usage policy set by the insitution and gives the user two options either Agree or Dis-Agree. The two options are in the form of buttons, with events that depending on what the user clicked, will create a log text file at a specified location, with enteries of Date,Time,CurrentUser, and if they agreed or disagreed. If they agreed the application after creating/amending the file will then terminate, otherwise it will update the file and then force Windows to logoff the current user.
Now I made a shortcut of the .exe of the application and placed it in the startup for all users, and yes the application loads at startup for all the users following the procedures mentioned above. The problem I am facing is, that if the current user logs off, or is forced to log off, and another user logs onto Windows, goes through the whole ordeal mentioned above, the application is denied access to the logfile that was created under the previous user, and thus crashes.
So my question is, how can I created a text file using vb 2008 application, that is accessible by multiple Windows users. I have even tried changing the location of the created file to the shared folder, but the end result is the same.

I have an asp.net web app that uses forms-based authentication, a SqlMembershipProvider (using an encrypted password format), and a SqlRoleProvider. I need to know if it's possible to administer the users (create new users, assign them to roles, etc.) from a windows application - the powers that be don't want any administrative functionality in the web app itself.Here is the membership provider definition from web.config:
<membership defaultProvider="MyProvider">
<providers>
<add name="MyProvider"

1.Id like to publish a free vb.net desktop application for the users to download and use meanwhile Id like to collect usage information ex: user ip address, users registration information, used features, time spent if the user allows the report to be sent back.
2.Also , in order for the user to be able to use the application, hell have to register it then, everytime, before the application loads, it gets verified online that it was registered, maybe validate the registration information or a valid user name and password, no critical personal information. The target of this step is for the application to be used exclusively by the registered user and maybe on his computer only.

I am writing a Windows Form program to automatically download and store generated PDF reports from a web site using the WebBrowser Control. The web site uses Ajax to link an icon back to the source aspx file which then returns a PDF file.
The problem I have is that the WebBrowser control brings up the File Save As dialog box when the PDF file is returned and I can find no way of handling this to cature and save the returned file. I have found other examples of how to manage this using the Navagating event to validate the extension of the file that is being accessed (e.g. [URL] and, if not an HTM, file then use the HTTP Web control to directly download the file. Unfortunately this will not work as the call references a .aspx page.

I'm looking for a way to (easily, by preference ;)) create a download link to a file on a separate file server.The situation is as follows: the application I'm developing (asp.net 2.0 in vb.net but I have a similar issue in c#, either solution works for me) will be run internally for a company.As is good practice, the file storage and web application are on two separate servers.I basically need to be able to create a download link to a file, the only available URL i have to access the file is servernamefolder1folder2folder3file.txt (can be any sort of file)[code]Which doesn't work for obvious reasons. It used to be set up to write that file to the application path itself and that worked perfectly, but it isn't good practice and that's why I'm changing it (or trying to).I read solutions about creating a download page and then having a table in your DB which holds the links and returns the proper web URL for download but the time constraint I am faced with unfortunately doesn't allow me to develop that.
Assuming I can provide a string with the full filepath to the file like the above, what is the easiest way to just create a link that, when clicked, downloads the document? I have 0 admin rights in this environment. That really isn't helping me. Let's assume I am given the correct link like above and have the appropriate file access rights and such.The above example does work in IE, but not in Firefox and Chrome. IE converts it to a file://servername/... link which does what it's supposed to, but FF and Chrome both actively decided that this is unsafe and have disabled it from their browsers.

I have built a vb.net web application. I have tried to make it secure, with all users requiring a password to get in. The only problem is that if anyone can guess (or detect using some kind of hacking tools) the url of the javascript file, they can download it and read it, without even having to log in first.
Is there any way that this can be prevented?

how to save the users radio buttons choices to load into a file. I have a button which controls the If statements to determine the price of the configuration. I was wanting to save these choices that the user made. I thought I could do this by altering the If statements but I don't know if thats the right way. I've got 3 different groupboxes with 3 options in each.
Heres a part of the code for the IF statements:
Private Sub UpdateConfig_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles UpdateConfig.Click
If Choice1Option1.Checked = True And Choice2Option1.Checked = True And Choice3Option1.Checked = True Then
PriceShow.Text = Prices(0, 1)
TextBoxProcessor.Text = Choice1Option1.Text
