I have built a vb.net web application. I have tried to make it secure, with all users requiring a password to get in. The only problem is that if anyone can guess (or detect using some kind of hacking tools) the url of the javascript file, they can download it and read it, without even having to log in first.
Is there any way that this can be prevented?
I have written a program in VB 2010 that dumps documentation info into an Excel file. Basically, the Excel file is a log file that keeps track of revisions for design drawings at an engineering firm.
There are approximately 20 people that have access to this program. However, I've run into issues where multiple users may be using the program and trying to send info to the Excel file at the same time. The Excel file is set to read only. My program opens the file with write access, and dumps the info into the appropriate cells, then closes the file. If one person is in the process of using the program, it causes an error with another persons system if they try to use it at the same time.
In some cases, it causes my program to crash, and it leaves the Excel file open on someones system.
Typically, my program would only have the Excel file open for a couple seconds. So, the issues mentioned above are rare, but they do happen.
I'm looking for ideas to prevent this issue from occuring.

This program is going to submit GET data to our webpage. However, we don't want users accessing the webpage any other way than the program. We can prevent users from sharing the program using HWID authentication, but nothing prevents them from using a packet scanner to get the URL of the webpage. We thought about user-agent authentication, which we will implement, but user-agents can easily be spoofed.
how can we prevent users from accessing the webpage directly, instead of through the program?

A lot if the info entered is used in calculations and so must not contain alpha characters, only numbers. Currently, users can highlight a combo box control defined as shown above and begin typing anything they like. For example, I have one combo box that offers the user a selection of integers between 1 and 9. I can highlight the combo box cell and enter "Hello, World!" if I'd like.What does it take to disable this ability? I'm sure there's a property, but I have yet to find it. I have searched the Internet, and have found only the ability to have user-entered values added to the list and a stream of data-binding tutorials.

I have created a scrabble game that generates random letters. For the user to type in a word using the random letters they have to type it in a text box.
I want my program to prevent users from typing in letters that are not provided in the text box and to allow them to type in the random letters that are provided.

Now upon this data is viewed in csv the trailing zero from column_A is gone. it becomes 14.I revise the writing of data from Column_A which if the start of it is zero i insert a single quote. Upon viewing it in csv i got a '00014 which single quote is visible. how can i remove this single quote? which i expected to view it 00014 only in csv file.
The user will be selecting a file to be read into the program. At the top of the form is a button that says "View Hourly Data File". This button is to be a link to open the data file in a text viewer. However, I would like the button to be deactivated (grayed out) until the user selects the file. Once the file is selected, it will then be an active button.
The Second:Once the user selects the file, and the button is activated, I want the user to be able to open and view-only the text file that they have loaded. It should be opening into a pop-up window.

I am trying to move from the old ADO to the new ADO .NET . However , no matter how many tutorials I read over the internet , I still can't find a way to do something which , as I believe , has to be very simple I tried to mimic the way the graphic control did but I am missing some things ... I noticed that , in the graphic way , the wizard created 4 controls :- a DataGridView control- a DataSet control- a BindingSource control- a TableAdapter controlI recreated all of them and filled their correspondent properties , but yet I can't make it work . In my program I allow the user to copy a file from one folder to another. If the file already exists in the target folder I want it to be overwritten.
All that works just fine - I'm not asking how to copy files.
But here's an example
Source file is:-
\SomeMachinesomeFolderfile.xyz
Target is:-
P:file.xyz
This might at first look like two separate files but in this case P: is mapped to \SomeMachinesomeFolder so the source and the target are actually the same file and the file copy will obviously fail.
Of course I want it to fail but my problem is that the windows generic error message seen by the user is not very helpful. It says something simple like "... can't be copied because it's busy". If the user isn't very bright he doesn't realize he's selected the same file both as source and target and he doesn't understand why it's busy.
What I want to do is detect in advance that the source and the target are the same file and display a more meaningful message to the user and not even bother trying to copy.
So, is there a way to detect that
\SomeMachinesomeFolderfile.xyz
and
P:file.xyz
are actually the same file?
I created an application that when a user logs onto their Windows account, a Form is displayed outlining the current Computer Usage policy set by the insitution and gives the user two options either Agree or Dis-Agree. The two options are in the form of buttons, with events that depending on what the user clicked, will create a log text file at a specified location, with enteries of Date,Time,CurrentUser, and if they agreed or disagreed. If they agreed the application after creating/amending the file will then terminate, otherwise it will update the file and then force Windows to logoff the current user.
Now I made a shortcut of the .exe of the application and placed it in the startup for all users, and yes the application loads at startup for all the users following the procedures mentioned above. The problem I am facing is, that if the current user logs off, or is forced to log off, and another user logs onto Windows, goes through the whole ordeal mentioned above, the application is denied access to the logfile that was created under the previous user, and thus crashes.
So my question is, how can I created a text file using vb 2008 application, that is accessible by multiple Windows users. I have even tried changing the location of the created file to the shared folder, but the end result is the same.

3) Using the above keys from a remote computer through a shared folder
And instead of deleting move it to another folder in the same computer. Basically when a user tries to delete a file or folder it should move it to a specified folder instead of deleting it.
I want to prevent file opening (temporarily) on certain files. I've tried encryption, which is fine, but a bit slow for my purpose. The actual end product doesn't have to keep some computer hacker type from getting in, just the lay user. I was wondering if it was possible to encrypt only part of a file and reverse this after or what options I had.

This method has the annoying problem that any code after this line does not execute correctly.
It pretty ancient code, so I'm guessing there are probably better ways to do this these days.
The following function copies a file from Source & Path to Dest & Path, normally setting file attributes to normal before copying.Yet, a user of my app has reported it to fail when copying readonly files, returning a permissions-related error. The user is however running the code as administrator, and the error happens - quite strangely - on the SetLastWriteTimeUtc line.Although the code reports that the file attributes are set to normal, windows explorer shows that they are set to read only.
