I tried DbNull.Value but no luck. How do I assign a default value as null to a string parameter that is null in VB.NET? Its litte strange to see that VB does not have anything like plain null as most of the other languages do. Also what is the difference between null and DbNull and Nothing.

What is the standard way to implement optional query parameters in a .NET WinForms application?In other words, only query on a field if the value of a corresponding control is not null.
EDIT: I use a FillBy method which calls a query in my Access database. In the TableAdapter query editor, I just used WHERE (field1 = ?) AND (field2 = ?) ... I just can't find the "hook" to bind form controls to the table adapter query parameters and so that if a form uses the default value to not query on it.

I have an object, called 'PERSON' This person object has a title, firstName & Surname property as well as many other which are at the moment irrelevant. It also has a read only property called Fullname which concatenates the two or three parameters mentioned above depending on an optional parameter 'withTitles' passed over when you call PERSON.FULLNAME
PERSON.FULLNAME(true) <- Will add titles if there are any
PERSON.FULLNAME(false) <- Will give the name without the title

I get an error: PERSON does not contain a property of 'FullName'. If I change this to any other property that does not take a parameter it works as expected. Now I'm guessing that the binding procedure can't handle optional or mandatory parameters for object properties, is this right? Is there a better way to do it? I thought about looping through the collection to add them manually but that kinda defeats the object of DataBinding!
Is there an equivalent in Java to VB.NET's optional parameters?Also is it possible to switch on anything other than integers in Java?

Well, I thought, perhaps Attributes don't support named parameters. I know they can behave a little weird (they don't support all types in their arguments for example I think), so I thought little of it.But then... I noticed something else. If you take a look at my code of the attribute class again. Notice that I am using an attribute on that class as well... And what do you know: named parameters. Working just fine... The AttributeUsage attribute has the exact same configuration: one fixed parameter and two optional parameters. I seem to be able to call them using named parameters just fine, where I cannot call my own attribute constructor with named parameters...

I'm using a stored procedure to updateinsert data into a table using MERGE. One of the items being inserted is a VarBinary file. Now if I wish to add a new file it's just a case of using ReadAllBytes as below, to remove the file I pass DBNull. Now what if other fields are being updated but the file is not being changed? I want the field to remain untouched unless I'm replacing the file or deleting it as above. I cannot add the file via the parameter again as it may only exist in the database, unless I read it first and write it back which seems pointless. [Code]

I have a search function de build.We are using pure ASP.NET w VB.NET We have multiple DropDownLists and we're building a search query with whatever was selected in those DDLs. My question is, how can I handle the blank values (unselected dropdownlist values) with the SQL Query ? I'm using AND operators in the query so if anything is blank it'll fail the search. If the dropdownlist has no selected value, i don't want the value to be part of the search. It would be easy to code with just 2-3 parameters, but we're looking thru at least 10 items and doing a SWITCH CASE or multiple IFs would soon become mayhem.
View 1 RepliesI am hardcoding an insert statement to a database, based on certain details a user enters into a windows form. The form has a few textbox and datetimepicker controls for the purpose. This form enters a single row in a single table in the database.The table has a few possible null columns defined, in those cases where the user does not have any data for those columns at that particular time.
I have to provide controls for passing data to those null columns nevertheless. In my case, I have two such columns that accept null values, and two corresponding controls - a textbox and a datetimepicker. The datetimepicker has a checkbox added to it so that if it is supposed to be null it doesn't pass the default current date value, and remains unchecked to explicitly specify that it is supposed to be null. By default it is unchecked.

I think the value of 'Nothing' from the subprocedure's paramter is not being assigned to the sqlcommand's parameter as a database NULL, which is what I need to pass to the database.I know instead of using optional parameters I can easily create overloaded subprocedures where one sub allows not passing values where the column(s) is supposed to null and other overloaded subs permit combinations of which column(s) are null or not. But it is simple as long as there is just one, or at the most two null columns in a table. If I have dozens of null values in a table that the user can choose to enter or not in a data entry form?

If you assign a value to a nullable integer via a ternary operator, it can't become null..While this question may seem like a duplicate of many, it is actually being asked for a specific reason.Take this code, for example: Dim n As Integer? = If(True, Nothing, 1) In that code, the ternary expression should be returning Nothing, but it's setting n to 0. If this were C#, I could say default(int?) and it would work perfectly. Now it looks like I am going to have to ditch the ternary and use a regular If block, but I really want to use the ternary. If Nothing were truly VB.NET's equivalent to C#'s default, how can you explain this behavior?

More specifically, I want to do something along the lines of this:If x = 0 Then
x = DBNull.Value where x is declared by Dim x as Object. I would rather use Double, but I can't assign DBNull.Value to this, and using Object works quite well, too. But every time I hit this condition, I get an exception: A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll This is not a major show-stopper, since the database value I write x to in the next step, is NULL by default - most of the time! So I need the ability to write NULL to it. If that was not the case, I would have been able to work around this by catching exceptions, I think - but sadly, this isn't really of use then.
I have a property called ReplacementTo and I set a value to it based on the selecteditem from the combobox, like this:

I am using an EntityDataSource with a FormView on VB.NET application. The FormView contains an AjaxControlToolKit TabContains with multiple tabs. Due to the fact that each tab is a naming container, Bind doesn't work properly for updating values (as discovered from reading other posts on stackoverflow). I instead have to declare UpdateParameters on my EntityDataSource.
Example markup is as follows:

This works great, until a customer is edited and their name is set to nothing (assuming in this case, a null name is allowed). The Name UpdateParameter is set to Null but the ObjectStateEntry is not set to modified for Null properties, even if previously the Entity had a value specified. As long as the name is changed to something other than Null, everything is updated correctly. I found a workaround by putting the following code in the Updating event of the EntityDataSource.

This makes sure that each property in the UpdateParameters has its state set to modified. It works, but it seems like a hack and I can see it causing problems down the road. Is there anything else I could do?
I am having the same issues as per this question: WCF not deserializing JSON input..I am at a loss and desperate for a solution. I have scoured the net for answers, but I have found only this question that matches my exact problem. If I use Function Contains (q.FirstName & " " & q.LastName).Contains(employeeName), I will not get any result back if employeeName is "John Clark" Function Contains looks only for next words from left to right.
