Asp.net - Declaring A Nvarchar In VB/Matching An Nvarchar In A SQL Query?

I'm working on an ASP.NET application that uses VB. I'm using a SQLReader/SQLCommand/SQLConnection within the VB file to try to pull data values.I was mystified to find out that the reason why the query wasn't returning any values, and someone here showed me how to troubleshoot the query to verify things were being returned, which they weren't.
I talked to a co-worker, and he asked if it would match because I was feeding a string, and the Text field for the database is an nvarchar. How can I declare the variable in VB so that when fed in as a parameter for the query, it can match?The types of data it looks to match are just basic things like "2", "2a", "1a", and so on.If there's no way to just declare the nvarchar, does anyone have a suggestion on how I might workaround that?

Edit: I set things up like you guys said, but now I'm getting an error that "No mapping exists from object type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter to a known managed provider native type. "I have the parameter as a form-wide variable like this:
Private travelParameter As New SqlParameter("@trip", SqlDbType.NVarChar)
And then inside the main form,
travelQuery.CommandText = "SELECT [StartLoc], [EndLoc],[TravelTime], [AvgSpeed], [Distance] FROM [TravelTimes] WHERE [TripNum] = @trip"
travelQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@trip", travelParameter)

I'd like to get some values from nvarchar column (SQL Server database). My code looks like below:
Dim value1 As String
Dim con2 As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection
con2.ConnectionString = "data source=AAA;initial catalog=DWH;integrated security=SSPI;"
con2.Open()

It works fine only when there are numeric values in the column. But in this column are stored variable characters values and this types of values are not being displayed on the page. I don't know what is the reason.I've tried to use getValue.ToString instead of getString but it doesn't work either.

I don't know how to convert the nvarchar value into an int, but that is the way it needs to be set up. I've found other posts about this but I don't know how to use CAST in the INSERT statement I have. All the posts I could find were about converting to int in SELECT statements. I need this statement to change the field @Duration to an int in the database. @Duration is an amount of time. (01:00, 02:00...) They will all get rounded up to the next int value. So if a user enters 0:45, it should be converted to 1. how to get this INSERT to work?

I'm using a SQL Server 2008 stored procedure to create a new record with this syntax:
cmd.Parameters.Add("@photo", DBNull.Value)
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
but the result is a:
Operand type clash: nvarchar is incompatible with image
Photo is not the only parameter but is the only image one, I am not passing a nvarchar but a null value, am I missing something?

What I'd like to do is write this to a DB as-is by adding wholeThing as a parameter using to SqlCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue, but all of my painstakingly-inserted newlines go away (or appear to).
I saw this and was hoping I didn't need to concern myself with CHAR(nnn) SQL stuff.

Solution at the bottom. I receive the following error when trying to update records: Must declare Scalar Variable @PaymentTermID Problem is, @PaymentTermID should be defined already in the Update parameters. The 2 functions for onrowdatabound and onrowupdate are tweaked versions of the ones found here for the DropDownList: GridViewRow.DataItem Property. Delete works fine. No new lines are added, just names changed around. I am not exactly used to working with asp objects.

I don't need the criteria to be case sensitive, but I do need only the first letter of textData to match alpha. I have tested the LIKE comparator and it does not return all records that begin with alpha.

We have a great book written for Visual Basic 2005 that we type code that is prepared in advance. We are using Visual Basic Express 2008 and normally this works really great; type the code run the program and it works, however I am running into a snag.
The textbook shows the following code: IN THE(General) (Declarations)AREA we are told to type the following:

Ok, basically i have 3 different classes: one is a NormalUser, one is a SuperUser, and one is an Administrator. I have on one of my form loads an if statement like this:

So based on an item in a list, i want to create a new instance of that class to be my player. now i know that code doesn't work, because the variable is only present within the if statement. my question is, how can i declare "player" as a new instance of the correct type, and still be able to access it in other subs?

I've got a problem in the display of controls on a form. The form controls are fine on my development system, but when installed on another machine, (same operating system, but evidently some other installed objects), the textbox controls in some of the forms have a black backcolor. Some of the tabs are pure white with the blacked out textboxes, some are the normal color. Some of the textboxes in the other sections are fine, some are not.
Is there any way that I can declare that all my controls are to be the 'standard' .NET Framework 4 variety?

I am now facing the part II confusion with dll files. I would wanna load a custom built unmanaged dll that someone completely built, and load it within Visual Basic. I cannot reference it, because it doesn't seem to work. I wanna figure out how to use coding to load those dll's. Here is what I mean. If you have heard of irctunes. At first i thought it was the padding since mcrypt uses zero padding but i changed the php to use PKCS7 and get the same exact results.I think it has something to do with the padding in the php.Test output from .Net:
