I'm working on an ASP.NET application that uses VB. I'm using a SQLReader/SQLCommand/SQLConnection within the VB file to try to pull data values.I was mystified to find out that the reason why the query wasn't returning any values, and someone here showed me how to troubleshoot the query to verify things were being returned, which they weren't.
I talked to a co-worker, and he asked if it would match because I was feeding a string, and the Text field for the database is an nvarchar. How can I declare the variable in VB so that when fed in as a parameter for the query, it can match?The types of data it looks to match are just basic things like "2", "2a", "1a", and so on.If there's no way to just declare the nvarchar, does anyone have a suggestion on how I might workaround that?
Side note: This is a continuation, of sorts, of this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/768052/sql-reader-saying-no-values-exist-query-seems-fine
Edit: I set things up like you guys said, but now I'm getting an error that "No mapping exists from object type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter to a known managed provider native type. "I have the parameter as a form-wide variable like this:
Private travelParameter As New SqlParameter("@trip", SqlDbType.NVarChar)
And then inside the main form,
travelQuery.CommandText = "SELECT [StartLoc], [EndLoc],[TravelTime], [AvgSpeed], [Distance] FROM [TravelTimes] WHERE [TripNum] = @trip"
travelQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@trip", travelParameter)

I'd like to get some values from nvarchar column (SQL Server database). My code looks like below:

con2.ConnectionString = "data source=AAA;initial catalog=DWH;integrated security=SSPI;"
con2.Open()

It works fine only when there are numeric values in the column. But in this column are stored variable characters values and this types of values are not being displayed on the page. I don't know what is the reason.I've tried to use getValue.ToString instead of getString but it doesn't work either.
I'm trying to write some generic code in VB.NET that determines whether or not a SQL server database table contains an identity column and, if so, to return the name of that column.I'm working in Visual Basic 2008 Express and have created a SQL database, "MyDatabase" with 1 table called "MyTable". Within that table, I've got 3 columns, "ID", "Column1" and "Column2". I know, I know... inventive names. Under column properties in the Database Explorer, I've set the "ID" column "Identity Specification" to "yes" and have set the "Is Identity" value to "yes"
View 3 RepliesI don't know how to convert the nvarchar value into an int, but that is the way it needs to be set up. I've found other posts about this but I don't know how to use CAST in the INSERT statement I have. All the posts I could find were about converting to int in SELECT statements. I need this statement to change the field @Duration to an int in the database. @Duration is an amount of time. (01:00, 02:00...) They will all get rounded up to the next int value. So if a user enters 0:45, it should be converted to 1. how to get this INSERT to work?

I have a weather station from a company called BIOS that comes with a program that reads the data from the USB port of the weather station and then displays it on the computer screen. The GUI interface is very simple and I need to be able to come up with a beefier application. Mainly, I want an application that e-mails me when certain limits are exceeded (Indoor temperature for instance). My question is, any exmples of code that might interpret information from a USB port so that I can write the rest of my application around it?

I want to merge or import a column of data from one data table created in VB.NET to another data table's 'same-named' column.The destination data table has all the required columns created before hand but the source data table contains one column at a time, whose name is the same as that of one of the columns in destination data table.Whatever coding I have done for the same till now, results in blank rows at starting. View 3 RepliesI have already binded a data source from Access to my visual basic program but need to add a True/False column to two of the tables. I could do this manually in access and re-bind the sources but that would take up too much of my time so I wanted to know if I'm using the proper code to add a column to the data table directly from VB? Here is the code I want to try but I don't know where to place it?
OleDbCommand = OleDbCommand("ALTER TABLE tableName ADD
FieldName DataType");
(something).Connection = OleDbConnection;

I'm not sure what goes into the "something" parenthesis and where this code must go. I already tried editting through the data designer but although it shows the column in the DataGridView, it does not save any data or the column into the actual access file.
Attempting to run an SQL statement to UPDATE a column in a table with new data. The column being updated is defined as varchar(40) and the new data is 41 bytes (varchar(41)). I get a generic 'data will be truncated' error message, but no detail on which column caused the problem. I've attached a sample VB program to illustrate the issue. In this scenario, Company is defined as varchar(40).
My question: Can I get a more detailed error message? i.e. can I get an error message that tells me the row and column that the truncation occurs in? Often times, I may be updating hundreds or thousands of rows and only one value in one column from the source file is too large for a database cell. As a related question, does each OLEDB provider create its own error messages. i.e. will the MS SQL Server OLEDB provider potentially give different text in the error message than say the MS Jet OLEDB provider?

View 7 RepliesThis should be an easy one, looks like I got myself too confused.I get a table from a database, data ranges from varchar to int to Null values.
