Asp.net - Execute Sql Script And Not Wait For Completion

Aug 26, 2010

I have a sql stored procedure that runs for about 3 minutes, I am looking to execute this stored procedure from asp.net, but I know that if I do, that asp.net will most likely time out. I'm thinking of just creating a job within sql to have it execute that stored procedure, and have asp.net call a stored procedure to call that job. I have a table that is updated when the stored procedure starts, and when it ends.

My application will use this to determine when the script has finished, however, I wanted to know if there is another way to run the stored procedure and not have it wait for it to finish to push a response back. I just want to know if there is a more efficient way to do this, or if I should just stick to creating jobs for scripts that take forever to run.

WebBrowser Control Is In A Wait State : How To Kill The Wait

May 27, 2009

While navigating to a series of sites at one site the WebBrowser control's DocumentCompleted EVENT is tripped and no other recorded Browser events occur after that. When this happens the hour glass cursor indicates the browser is waiting. From this point it take 120 to 250 seconds of wall clock time before the browser resumes. I am looking for a way to force an abnormal termination without destroying the control. I have tried "Stop", "nav to about:blank" repeatedly without success. How can I force an abnormal termination when the Cntrl is in a wait state?

Consider the following: The last known Browser event to be tripped is a Document Complete event; nothing else occurs after this. When this transpires the Cntrl is waiting.

File Operations Return Before Completion?

Jun 5, 2011

The file operation calls are returning before they are actually complete, or the disk is being cached somehow. What is happening here is that a zipped file containing a number of files to be updated on the users machine has been unzipped and the filenames are returned in an array called 'newfiles'. Each actual file unzipped is temporarily preceded by a '~' character. We rename each existing file to <filename>.old, then delete all the old files. However, sometimes when the code runs, the old files are not deleted. The only explanation for this I can think of is that the second 'Fileexists' is not seeing the files because the filesystem has not caught up at that point. I've never seen this behaviour documented anywhere, though. It works fine when single-stepped.

For Each fn As String In newfiles
If .FileExists(fn) Then
'rename existing file to .old
delpath = Path.ChangeExtension(fn, "old")
.RenameFile(fn, delpath)
End If
'rename the new file to correct name i.e. remove "~"

Forms Completion Using Windows Authentication?

Apr 6, 2009

I am reading the article at: [URL].. Forms Authentication in ASP.NET 2.0". I am using VS 2008 and .Net Framework 3.5. I don't know if this makes a difference, so please let me know.

A user logs on to our system in the morning Based on their Windows Authentication, they can access several intranet applications. For a particular application, the user has to select their Organization or Position or Location.

Based on the user's Windows Authentication, once the user selects one of the three above and clicks a "Submit" button, a second page is launched that shows certain information about the selection based on the User's authentication.

For example, if User selects Organization, the following information will be returned based on the Organization THEY are a member of. They can not access information from OTHER organizations, ONLY their own based on their login credentials. This information returned as a result of the dropdownlist selected value includes: street address, city, state, zipcode, Bus. Unit #, etc. appears in labels on the second page.

The labels can be dynamically created at runtime. (I dont know if a User control can be created to do this, since the "Position" and "Location" will contain the same address information, and it doesn't matter at the moment). I just want to populate the labels on the second page (or on Postback) based on the User's log in credentials after they click the "Submit" button. Or, if they don't have to click a button, just have the information complete based on the selected value of the dropdownlist control.

Timing A Method From Execution To Completion?

Mar 6, 2012

So, I got an SSD drive for my computer the other week, and decided to have a little fun. I wrote a program which starts every single program in the Windows Programs folder in the Start Menu, via clicking the "Go" button on my Form. It works beautifully. Only thing I would like to add to it is some sort of timer, which I have never tried in any programming language. I would basically like for a timer to be running, counting in real time (seconds), until my loop ends, and then display the total time taken at the end. I was thinking about setting a variable equal to the current time, before the loop starts, and then another equal to the time right after it ends, and then taking the difference of the two.

How To Report Result Back To Control Class Upon Completion

Aug 22, 2011

I need a few threads working simultaneously with URL requests in a VB.NET 2010 app. Once one of them finishes, it should continue with the next task in a list. I'm new to using threads. Since it seems like I can't declare an array of BackgroundWorker, I thought I'd have a control class that creates an instance of a task class for each task, which in turn starts a BackgroundWorker in its constructor.

However, with this approach I'm not sure how to report the result back to the control class upon completion. I had this vague idea that I could send a reference to an object in the control class (or to a public event I can trigger, is this possible?), but then I have to somehow store this address until the work is done. And I don't know how I can store the address from a ByRef for future use.

Modify .net's BackgroundWorker Class So That It Fires A Custom Event Upon Method Completion?

Nov 16, 2011

I have a BackgroundWorker in a vb.net program that is doing a lengthy data import routine. I want to modify its RunWorkerAsync method so that it fires a custom event on completion of the method. (So that a method in an automated process can respond to the event and resume its work). In a sense I want to 'extend' the RunWorkerAsync method to add an extra line of code--but I can't 'see' the code in the method (to just add the line raising the event) because BackgroundWorker is an MSDN class from Microsoft.The only solution that I can think of is to 'wrap' the background worker class in a wrapper that calls the .RunWorkerAsync method and then raises the event.

Public sub wrapperMethod()
myBackgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync()
raise customEvent
end sub

Is there a design pattern that I might use? An easy way to address this with the .net language?

PS: Unfortunately, I'm automating some clanking legacy software and backgroundworker is used in many locations, so wrapping the backgroundworker will be a bit of work and may open bugs.

Xaml Editor In .Net Express / Visual Studio: Auto Completion Annoyance?

Mar 23, 2012

As I'm typing out Xaml in VB.Net Express 2010, it helpfully finishes certain things for me. Most of the autocomplete is fine, but some of it annoys me and it leads me to wonder if I'm missing something or doing it wrong.

If I type:

<GroupBox Header=

It automatically puts a quotation mark before and after my cursor. I've gotten used to the quotation mark before the cursor - I immediately start typing in whatever property I wanted. But now there is a quotation mark after my cursor! I have to reach over to the other side of my keyboard and press the right arrow key to move past it. I find this insanely aggravating, because it breaks my "flow" while I'm typing. Are you supposed to be able to press a close-at-hand key (like tab, but that doesn't work) to move to the other side of the quotation mark or do they really intend for you to have to constantly use the right arrow key?

Office Automation :: Excel Program Leaves EXCEL.EXE Floating After Completion

Feb 24, 2012

I am writing a program that loops through all of the sheets in an Excel workbook and saves each sheet as its own workbook. It turned out to be a bit trickier than I expected, since the Sheet.Copy method creates a strange object (see here for the MSDN discussion that I believe is relevant: [URL]. Anyway, I found a Stack Overflow post [URL] that got me to where I am, which is essentially complete, outside of one hanging EXCEL.EXE process that is left after the program completes, which I believe is a result of the sheet.copy method creating a new workbook (potentially a new application as well?). The other thing I run into, which I believe is related to this, is that even though I have my application set to visibility off, when I run the program, excel still opens up and is visible going through the steps.

Here is my code:

Code:
Imports System.Data
Imports System.IO
Imports Microsoft.Office.Interop

[CODE]...

Now I think the problem comes from the end of the loop, where I try to close the export file and the new worksheet it creates:

Code:
'close excel and release com objects
System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(exportsheet)
exportsheet = Nothing
xlApp1.Workbooks(fileNames(counter - 1)).Close(False)

I can't figure out what to do to release the `ComObject` for the new worksheet that is created. I have been trying all sorts of things, but it always throws a COM error when I do it and if I try to define it as nothing (like I do with exportsheet) is says that it is read only by default, so I can't do it. It seems like it should be something as simple as: System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(xlApp1.Workboo ks(fileNames(counter - 1))) But that is not the case. I have tried a few variants of this and I am thinking it has to do with the MSDN link above, but I can't quite sort out what to do. So the code works for my purposes, outside of leaving one EXCEL.EXE after it is done. As far as a test file, I am just using an Excel file with 3 sheets and I put some information on each and change the sheet name, so it is easy to see if it is working or not.

.net - Excel Program Leaves EXCEL.EXE Floating After Completion

Feb 24, 2012

Anyway, I found another Stack Overflow post that got me to where I am, which is essentially complete, outside of one hanging EXCEL.EXE process that is left after the program completes (check the update for one more issue that came up, but I think they are related).

Here is my code:

Imports System.Data
Imports System.IO
Imports Microsoft.Office.Interop
Imports Office = Microsoft.Office.Core

[Code]......

Final Update: On the off chance that some poor soul ran into the same issue I was running into, the first update should solve it, but it is also important to note that the excel.exe will hang until you close the application. I am report automation code as a windows form application (so coworkers can give the file location and such) and there is going to be an excel.exe process running until you close the pop up window from the program. Maybe garbage collect does not run until you close the application window or it just hangs on to an instance of excel.exe for some other reason.
