I have a sql stored procedure that runs for about 3 minutes, I am looking to execute this stored procedure from asp.net, but I know that if I do, that asp.net will most likely time out. I'm thinking of just creating a job within sql to have it execute that stored procedure, and have asp.net call a stored procedure to call that job. I have a table that is updated when the stored procedure starts, and when it ends.
My application will use this to determine when the script has finished, however, I wanted to know if there is another way to run the stored procedure and not have it wait for it to finish to push a response back. I just want to know if there is a more efficient way to do this, or if I should just stick to creating jobs for scripts that take forever to run.

I just had a new, last-minute idea on to take on a task, so I am running to StackExchange for quick help.
What I want to do is execute a series of methods right in a row, each in their own threads. I want the application to wait until all of these threads are completed, after which the program will resume. It also has to use managed threading (thread pool).
What quick examples could you provide to help me along the way? If it's too complex, what things should I know about so that I can Google it on my own?

I am creating a GUI that monitors the entered application and if the application crashes the GUI starts the application back up. Problem is to run this application (WoW Private Server) I need 3 running applications. Is there a way to shell and wait 3 applications all at once. OR if i was to create a separate console application who's only job was to start the three applications at once how would I pass the application variable?
Here is my program thus far: [URL]

While navigating to a series of sites at one site the WebBrowser control's DocumentCompleted EVENT is tripped and no other recorded Browser events occur after that. When this happens the hour glass cursor indicates the browser is waiting. From this point it take 120 to 250 seconds of wall clock time before the browser resumes. I am looking for a way to force an abnormal termination without destroying the control. I have tried "Stop", "nav to about:blank" repeatedly without success. How can I force an abnormal termination when the Cntrl is in a wait state?
Consider the following: The last known Browser event to be tripped is a Document Complete event; nothing else occurs after this. When this transpires the Cntrl is waiting.
1:50:657: ============================= ENTER WebBrowser1_DocumentCompleted EVENT ========================================

I'm trying to add a new feature to some software I have developed but am having difficulty. Essentially I want to add a 'Pause' and a 'Resume' feature.I have a timer which counts down.
Private Sub Timer_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Timer.Tick
Dim togo As TimeSpan = mTestEnd.Subtract(Now)
If togo.Ticks < 0 Then
Timer.Enabled = False
[code]....
When the Start command button is clicked the timer starts counting down from what amount the user inputed. I've added an elseif to pause the timer and this works ok. When I click resume the although the timer text has paused the actual timer has not and continues from where the timer would be if it had not been stopped. Much like a stopwatch lap timer. Could you help me with my Else statement.
If StartButton.Text = "Start" Then
StartTime.Text = Format(DateTime.Now, "HH:mm:ss") 'Hour(Now) & ":" & Minute(Now) & ":" & Second(Now)
txtTimeLimit.Text = HourUp.Text & ":" & MinuteUp.Text & ":" & "0"
mTestEnd = Now.Add(TimeSpan.Parse(txtTimeLimit.Text))

I am trying to find a way to resume a thread after catching the AbortThreadException and calling AbortReset.
My thread is running a loop to control two motors used in a raster scan. Once the button is pressed to begin the scan, I want to be able to click a stop scan button and have the following happen:
1. AbortThreadException is thrown and caught- a window comes up asking if you really want to abort the scan. Click yes for abort, no for suspend, or cancel to continue scanning.
2. Given users answer the program responds accordingly- If cancel, then the scan should continue right where it left off and not restart.
My problem occurs in my understanding of the thread events. I am not sure how to tell a thread to wait for a button event nor do i know how to tell a thread to continue where it left off. I also noticed that the 'suspend' and 'resume' methods have been deemed obsolete and i am not sure of the alternative way of doing those actions.
The following is the code used to catch the exception and execute the task.

I want to make my form freeze for 5 seconds before it resumes to the next form.So I have a form that says : Establishing a connection....
But I don't want it to make a connection, i just want the user to think that it's making a connection.
And I then want it, when the timer reaches zero, that it would resume to the next form.
I just need the code of the timer behavior.

I am developing a Windows Service in VB2008 and am in the testing stage. What I have noticed is that if I Pause it while it is busy doing something and then resume it, the process generates an error. While I am debugging this I wanted to determine exactly what the difference is between Pausing/Resuming and Stopping/Starting a service.I searched, but most results simply told me how to Stop/Start/Pause and Resume a service, a hurdle that I jumped over many years ago. Does any one know of any resources that go into detail what happens when a service is stopped vs when it is paused?From some experimentation, it seems that if I do not place any code in the OnPause and OnContinue events the Pause/Resume commands have no effect.

The file operation calls are returning before they are actually complete, or the disk is being cached somehow. What is happening here is that a zipped file containing a number of files to be updated on the users machine has been unzipped and the filenames are returned in an array called 'newfiles'. Each actual file unzipped is temporarily preceded by a '~' character. We rename each existing file to <filename>.old, then delete all the old files. However, sometimes when the code runs, the old files are not deleted. The only explanation for this I can think of is that the second 'Fileexists' is not seeing the files because the filesystem has not caught up at that point. I've never seen this behaviour documented anywhere, though. It works fine when single-stepped.
For Each fn As String In newfiles
If .FileExists(fn) Then
'rename existing file to .old
delpath = Path.ChangeExtension(fn, "old")
.RenameFile(fn, delpath)
End If
'rename the new file to correct name i.e. remove "~"

I am reading the article at: [URL].. Forms Authentication in ASP.NET 2.0". I am using VS 2008 and .Net Framework 3.5. I don't know if this makes a difference, so please let me know.
A user logs on to our system in the morning Based on their Windows Authentication, they can access several intranet applications. For a particular application, the user has to select their Organization or Position or Location.
Based on the user's Windows Authentication, once the user selects one of the three above and clicks a "Submit" button, a second page is launched that shows certain information about the selection based on the User's authentication.
For example, if User selects Organization, the following information will be returned based on the Organization THEY are a member of. They can not access information from OTHER organizations, ONLY their own based on their login credentials. This information returned as a result of the dropdownlist selected value includes: street address, city, state, zipcode, Bus. Unit #, etc. appears in labels on the second page.
The labels can be dynamically created at runtime. (I dont know if a User control can be created to do this, since the "Position" and "Location" will contain the same address information, and it doesn't matter at the moment). I just want to populate the labels on the second page (or on Postback) based on the User's log in credentials after they click the "Submit" button. Or, if they don't have to click a button, just have the information complete based on the selected value of the dropdownlist control.

So, I got an SSD drive for my computer the other week, and decided to have a little fun. I wrote a program which starts every single program in the Windows Programs folder in the Start Menu, via clicking the "Go" button on my Form. It works beautifully. Only thing I would like to add to it is some sort of timer, which I have never tried in any programming language. I would basically like for a timer to be running, counting in real time (seconds), until my loop ends, and then display the total time taken at the end. I was thinking about setting a variable equal to the current time, before the loop starts, and then another equal to the time right after it ends, and then taking the difference of the two.

I want to link sql server and vb.net (ADO.NET) . I'm using visual basic 2008 express edition and sql server management studio.
My problem is how to perform a search starting from the completion of a form (in vb.net ). On pressing the button search it verifies if the records are in the table (in my case FoaieParcursMasina).
SQL Server:
Step1: Create the table and insert into them the values (full DDL):
-- creating the table FoaieParcursMasina
CREATE TABLE FoaieParcursMasina

I've created an application that sends an email to a user on completion of a form. This works fine for me with my credentials but for other users they are getting a "The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure" error.We use outlook and exchange and the email doesn't need to go outside only internal - so is smtp the right choice and is SSL needed?

After installing SP1 of Visual Studio 2008, code completion shows all types when an object member shows the parameter list. Before SP1, parameter list would only show related types.Take a look at this image for an example: This happens on a Windows 7 and Windows XP machines I have, all services packs installed.

I need a few threads working simultaneously with URL requests in a VB.NET 2010 app. Once one of them finishes, it should continue with the next task in a list. I'm new to using threads. Since it seems like I can't declare an array of BackgroundWorker, I thought I'd have a control class that creates an instance of a task class for each task, which in turn starts a BackgroundWorker in its constructor.
However, with this approach I'm not sure how to report the result back to the control class upon completion. I had this vague idea that I could send a reference to an object in the control class (or to a public event I can trigger, is this possible?), but then I have to somehow store this address until the work is done. And I don't know how I can store the address from a ByRef for future use.
