Asp.net - Reading CSV File With OLEDB Ignores First Line Even With HDR=No In Connection String?
Jan 4, 2011
We're converting a Classic ASP site to an ASP.NET site. One function was to upload a 'template' of data in CSV format for importing into the database. There were several different record types in there (the first field always indentifies the type of data).The task was to get the CSV into a DataTable so it could be validated (new project is to have MUCH better validation rules)
The code seemed pretty straightforward - watered down (taking out comments, Try/Catch, etc) it is as follows:
Dim da As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter
Dim cn As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & strDirectory & ";" & "Extended Properties=""Text;HDR=No;FMT=Delimited;""")
[code]....
The DataTable (dtData) is populated, but only starting with the second line of the CSV file DESPITE the fact that "HDR=No" is in the connection string.

I have this program that uses OLEDB connection to import excel file to data table then use it in other functions.Now I have this question: What are the possible limitations of OLEDB when it reads the Excel file. The File is on xls format, and I want to know if there is such limitations(for example: It has limitation in reading value on a cell).

I want to read a tab delimited file so i set up a data reader with the following connection string: [Code] However when I do this it doesn't seem to delimiter at the tab characters (I cannot work out why it is breaking up the data where it is). the first few lines of the csv are in the attached "dbamstr.txt" - the select statement I am running is: "SELECT * FROM dbamstr.txt".

I'm using vs2010 and can't get this to work. The same code has worked in earlier versions. What has changed?
config file:
<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Data Source=MikeLaptop;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorksDW2008R2;Integrated Security=True"/>
</appSettings>
Code:
Dim strProvider As String = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
strProvider is always = nothing
How to do this now?

I've been trying to fix this problem for days, but I haven't been able to successfully apply any of the code that I've found to my project the way it is right now. Maybe I'll need to change the way it reads the file altogether.
Anyway, I'm trying to read through a text file line by line, reading each line into its own string.

I have a script that checks a version table from one mdb (server) and compares it to the same table in another mdb (user folder), if the version number is mismatched it needs to replace that file from the server, to the user folder. The problem is, how to get the OLEDB connection to the user folder since, the folder destination is
E:Configurator & UserName & Detail2004.mdb
How to set this up?
Here is my code:
Dim UserName As String = Environment.UserName.Substring(Environment.UserName.LastIndexOf("") + 1)
Dim connectionString2 As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" + "Data Source=C:Configurator" & UserName & "Detail2004.mdb"
Dim con2 As New Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(connectionString2)
Dim cmd2 As Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand

My program reads a 3rd party .txt file using OleDb and reads the file into a datatable. It's overall working fine except a user will occasionally have a problem reading a file. At this point.
Line that gets hung up
Try
Dim comm1 As New OleDbCommand("SELECT * FROM " & safeFileName & " Where " & Status & " = '" & StatusClosed & "'", con)
Dim dasold As New OleDbDataAdapter(comm1)
dasold.Fill(dtsold)
AddColsold()
[Code] .....
It can not retrieve a date for one of the fields, then gives error and does not get dates for each records after the one it gets hung up on but the date is in the file. If I open the file in excel and play with the column sizing, for instance just autoformat column width then it read the date and will work fine. I have looked at the file in notepad and cant see anything wrong in particular on the record it gets hung up on. I have no control over the .txt file since it comes form a 3rd party.

I'm reading a text file with StreamReader, line by line. If a condition is met, then I do an operation and then start reading the file again from the first line. I realize I could close and then re-open the file, but surely this would be very slow.
I could do this easily in VB6, but pulling my hair out trying to do this in vB.net. It seems that 'Seek' is the function to use, but it doesn't work.
I've seen other examples, where it works, but you must open it a different way -- with a file number.
Imports System.IO
Dim I as Integer
Dim LineText as String

I'm making a program which has 7 textboxes. I intend the program to be used for classes in school, so the text would be like 2D Art, Geology etc... whatever your classes are. I have figured out how to use the streamwriter to take the text in the textboxes and write them to a .txt file however, my issue is with loading the text from the .txt file back into the textboxes. I did figure out how to write it so that all the text in the .txt file is loaded back into textbox1 but I have 7 textboxes... Here's the coding for the Load button:
Private Sub Button46_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button46.Click
Dim MainWindowLog As String = "V:Users(O.o)~(--_--)~(o.O)DocumentsVisual Studio

Basically, I'm creating an application which takes a list of words in .txt format, such like this:
Abc
Def
Ghi
Jkl
mno
What I want to be able to do is modify the words, one by one, so that I end with
Abc1
Def1
Ghi1
Jkl1
mno1
or whatever the user wants.
I created this app in C++ to get the logic, since I am more confident with that

For example I have a strint containing text with more than 1 line. For example:
"Hello How Are You"
I want to read a specific line of the string, if I choose to read line 1 of the string in a messagebox then the word "How" will probably pop up.

I've been all over the help files and finally patched together a VB OleDb connection string for delimited text files:
Dim connection As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & "Data Source=" & fName & ";" & "Extended Properties=""text;HDR=YES;FMT=Delimited"""
"fName" is passed in by an open file dialog.In every case (for all paths) it throws: 'C:1_2010NormalFileNormal.csv' (or where ever it is pointed) is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.Since no path works, it must be a syntax error, but I'll be darned if I can see it.
Full code of this routine is:
Dim connection As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & "Data Source=" & fName & ";" & "Extended Properties=""text;HDR=YES;FMT=Delimited"""
Dim conn As New OleDbConnection(connection)
[code]....

I'm storing a multi-line text file (in .dir format) in the directory the user chooses, and what I need to do, is when they import it (which my program can already do) I need it to find the end of the file (line) and then read that line, that line will be a number which corresponds with a number system. Basically, the file looks like this
1. Time: 10/27/2009 4:58:09 PM
Title: Title
Author: Author
Entry: Test
2The 2 at the end specifies what the number will be next time. How do I do this?

Code:
' File exists, read file.

i want to ask what is the difference between oledb connection and odbc connection. I have a case, my office used ncomputing then i have to developed an application using sqlserver 2000 and vb.net 2005, i used oledb connection. When i try to implement it in ncomputing, why user must has admin access level and dbo level in sql server, it seems trouble when all users are admin. But there's a rumor that when using odbc connection, we dont need to give admin access level for users.es.

I'm trying to read an .rtf file one line at a time but I'm clearly missing something!The file contains 3 lines and I want each line to end-up in a different RichTextBox, so:
Open File
RichTextBox1 = 1st Line in File
RichTextBox2 = 2nd Line in File
RichTextBox3 = 3rd Line in File
Close File
What am I not understanding? I've tried using LoadFile to load the whole file into another RichTextBox first as I got the impression that RichTextBoxes are indexed - but what I got was strings not .rtf format. I've also looked to see if there's an equivalent of the text-centric ".ReadLine" and nothing seems to fit the bill.
