Asp.net - Validator Disappears On PostBack Inside Composite Control
Jul 17, 2009
This should be a simple problem to fix, as it uses the same way I fixed my last problem with FooControl (below).
Basically, I want to add a derived validator I made to this composite control. It works fine but on postback it just disappears in the markup, making me think it's lost its ViewState.
I am probably doing something wrong with instantiating it, but I've tried setting only the ControlToValidate, moving things around, and nothing works.
I've provided some surrounding code to see what's working and then what's not.
Private FooControl As IFooControl
Private Validator As MyValidator
Protected Overrides Sub CreateChildControls()

Let's say we have a composite web control with a combobox and a textbox. Is it possible to build into the control functionality such that when the text in the textbox changes, it posts back and adds the value as an option in the combobox?
I know that I could add an "onchange" handler to the textbox and make something work with Javascript, but that's not really what I'm looking to do. Is there a way to just put like:
CODE:
In the web control code and it connect to the TextChanged event of the textbox?

I'm trying to create a composite control that will look like a ComboBox with a TreeView style. I'm new to this topic and I have an urgent need to create such control. I know it's not an easy task but please I need your advice to complete what I already started to build. My approach was to combined a TextBox, button and a treeview into a UserControl and make them work together as one control to achieve the control that I'm looking for (A ComboBox with a Treeview style).
So I started by creating a new windows forms control library project and I added a text box and a button as a starting point. The text box will display the name of the selected node text of the treeview and the button will show the treeview under the text box when the user click on it.
Now I'm facing tow problems with my custom control:First when I drag the custom control to a test form the resizing of the control doesn't work properly even after I used the anchor property of the text box and button controls. If I try to resize it horizontally its working find but it's not vertically.
Second I don't know how and where should I place the treeview control and how I'm going to show it exactly under the text box when the user click on the button and hide it when the user click on one of the treeview nodes.

My question is on how custom controls should be updated.
I downloaded this owner drawn custom control, which I built, then copied the DLL to the Debug folder of the project and loaded it into the toolbox from there.
I decided to use this button on another project. I was mildly surprised to see the control was still in the toolbox but it seemed to work just fine. I decided to change this custom button's behavior. The button in the toolbox referenced the old version number. So I deleted it and loaded the newly rebuilt DLL.
Now come the problems. The first application--the one where the DLL was added to the toolbox from--still runs okay, but the second application is throwing errors, saying, Type 'CButtonLib.CButton' is not defined. When I add the button to a form, it appears okay. I can change its properties and it shows up in the code windows and in the object browser. But as soon as I try to run it and it throws the errors, it no longer appears in the object browser. References in the code window lose their intellisense.
Things I've tried include:
Copying the DLL to the project's debug and release folders and loading them into the toolbox from there. Removing it from the toolbox altogether and just adding a reference then copying and pasting a button directly from the first project. Copying in a form with a CButton on it from the first project. I'm having a weird problem with a custom Web Control in an ASP.NET forms application. For a web application, I figured that it would save me a lot of time to create a class which inherits from CompositeControl which combines a label with some other control such as a TextBox or DropDownList. This composite control has several properties that wrap properties of the underlying properties (e.g.: EnteredText wraps TextBox.Text). The controls can be used for databinding in the same way as the regular ones, but instead of txtBox.Text = someObject.someProperty you use compositeControl.EnteredText = someObject.someProperty. These controls are then used on ASPX pages and ASCX user controls.

I am making an invoicing application. I have a label (lblCost) inside of a UserControl (InvoiceEntry) inside of a FlowLayoutPanel (pnlEntries). InvoiceEntry represents a line item on the invoice, and pnlEntries is the "body" of the invoice. pnlEntries can hold several InvoiceEntry controls.
I am attempting to sum all of the lblCost values from each InvoiceEntry control to make a subtotal, and I want that subtotal to change automatically if costs are changed (e.g., a change in quantities being ordered). Is there a way to handle when the lblCost.Text property of any of the InvoiceEntry controls contained within pnlEntries changes?

Private mItem As New Items

I have several UserControls in an ASP:Repeater. They are 'Add to basket' User Controls with a text input for quantity and a button to add the item to the basket.
My problem is the value is being reset to 1 whenever I enter a value into the quantity text box. I think this is happening because the containing page reinitialised the repeater (which holds the UserControls) and the quantity is one again before the UserControl's click event is fired.
how to capture the value in the textbox before the Postback occurs, I am happy to stick this data in a session for now.
I am thinking I need something along the lines of PreLoad? But that didn't work for me

I have read through many of the questions related to my situation but I have not found one that does. I currently have a repeater with 4 bound items to it, clicking on a button in the repeater causes my error, below is the markup and codebehind. Can someone explain to me why this is happening and the fix for it? (I have excluded the page decleration and just included the page_load event. let me know if i should cut and past full code in)

I have a drop down menu, and based on which item is selected, I call a web service and then dynamically create some text boxes. The first time I drop down the menu and select an item, it works perfectly, and the text boxes are created and populated dynamically. However, the next time I drop down the menu (after the first postback), and select something different..fter the second postback, the original values remain in the textboxes.

Im new to .Net and I wondering if you have to re-create a table server control on every postback. I'm having a problem when a user clicks a button which adds a row to the table. It works fine up to about 50 rows being added then the page is extremely slow. [code]

I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs. As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup.
The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases."
I thought I had found a solution by using. ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False) which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered."
How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?

I'm trying to make a composite application.Lets say there are two regions with a view in each that interact with each other via drag and drop, view A contains a list of tasks that view b (which contains a list of People) doesn't really know about. When I select some tasks in the list from view a and drop it to another list maintained by view b which module should know what happened? does the module that maintains the tasks need to know about the module that maintains the people, or vice-versa? Where should I start?

I want to be able to get an instance of a class based on two fields in that class. I was hoping to use something like a dictionary, because I thought indexing would be the best for performance. Should I just use LINQ or go back to a strongly typed dataset? Here's an example of what I'm trying to do[code]...

VB.NET .NET 3.5 I have an aggregate class called Package as part of a shipping system. Package contains another class, BoxType . BoxType contains information about the box used to ship the package, such as length, width, etc. of the Box.
Package has a method called GetShippingRates. This method calls a separate helper class, ShipRater, and passes the Package itself as an argument. ShipRater examines the Package as well as the BoxType, and returns a list of possible shipping rates/methods.
What I would like to do is construct an Interface, IRateable, that would be supplied to the helper class ShipRater. So instead of:

However, ShipRater requires information from both the Package and its aggregate, BoxType. If I write an interface IRateable, then how can I use the BoxType properties to implement part of the Interface?

I have a dictionary that I want to access with a key that is the combination of a string (AcctNum) and a date (BalDate). It seems to me the simplest approach is to create the key by simply converting the date to a string and concatenating:MyKey = BalDate.ToString & "|" & AcctNum
I know I also have the option of creating a composite key by writing a separate class and overriding GetHashCode() and Equals() a la this solution. To me, the concatenated string is a simpler, if somewhat less elegant, solution. Am I missing some compelling reason why I should go with the composite key class approach?
This lookup is the crux of the project I am working on, so performance is my main objective (with readability a close second).

i have a project where I need to concatenate strings from 4 different tables based on a sequence of numbers. I created a 5th table that holds the number sequence and dictates in what order the strings get appended. I have created primary keys on the tables, but 3 of the tables are composite primary keys. I have written up to where I start referencing the primary keys, but am not sure how I should reference the keys on the actual tables. I saw some examples for creating composite keys from an array which I did. The main questions are did I declare the composite keys correctly, am I creating the composite key reference from the array correctly, and how should I reference it all to append to the stringbuilder variable.

I want to use a validator to compare 2 text box in such a way that ,
If V is in Text box 1, means User must type any of the numbers prefix V in Textbox 2 (V00001 to V00050).Other than V ,if they type any other Letters means error message must be shown.
Just like that if C is in TextBox 1 means user must type C00001 in TextBox2.(or any number from C00001 TO C00050) iF S is in textbox 1 means,User must Type S00001(S00001 TO S00050)

I have a .NET ActiveX/COM Object which has a WebBrowser control (among other controls such has buttons, etc) inside it.
This object seems to load fine, the buttons are displayed and working but, for some reason, the WebBrowser control doesn't show up!
Is there some limitation for this in IE (e.g., is IE afraid of something recursive, etc.)? Is there a way that I can overcome it?
