Asp.net - Why Is FileInfo Showing An Extra File Extension
Sep 6, 2009
I have been having problems with creating a download list of files for a downloader and was getting unexplained "File Does Not Exist" returns. My .avi files were returning found but but .exe and .txt files were getting the not exists.
I have now found by pulling in the whole directory and examining the file contents that my .exe files are showing ".exe.exe". My .txt files are showing ".txt.rtf". Wow, browsing the file directory in Server 2008 only shows a single extension. I don't see an option to display the extension as a column, just the "type". My directory looks like this:
Name Type
File1.exe Application
File2.txt Rich Text Document
File3.avi AVI File
I had renamed some of these files, maybe I just cannot rename files. I will try using originals ans see if I am ok. Maybe I need to rename the offending files without the displayed extensions. Is this just something weird with the server browser?

I'm using this query:
Dim FilesDirsQuery = From file In
_directory.EnumerateFileSystemInfos()
Select file.Name, file.Extension
It gets all files and directories in the _directory. But how to order the query by extension and name?
So I found that I have to use this to order by extension:
Dim FilesDirsQuery = From f In
_directory.EnumerateFileSystemInfos()
Select f.Name, f.Extension Order By Function(f As IO.FileInfo)
Return f.Extension
End Function
And I have to use "ThenBy", but it can't be used in my example. So I tried:
FilesDirsQuery.OrderBy(Function(f As IO.FileInfo)
Return f.Extension
End Function).ThenBy(..)
But it say's that my nested function doesn't have a compatible delegate. So what should I do?

I have the following VB function which takes a FileInfo object as a parameter:
Public Shared Shadows Sub Start(ByVal filePath As FieldInfo)
XmlConfigurator.ConfigureAndWatch(New System.IO.FileInfo(filePath.ToString()))
End Sub
In another class I have the following code calling that 'Start' method. But VisStudio indicates there is a problem with the 'FilePath' argument that I'm passing.

I have the code as below:
Dim xdTest As XDocument = XDocument.Load(GetXMLPath())
Dim objResult = From xe In xdTest.Elements("Some Element") _
Where xe.Element("strName").Value = strInput _
Select xe.Element("intValue").Value
objResult.
I cannot access any extension methods for objResult, like .ToList() or .First(). The file imports System.Linq and the project is targeted to .NET 3.5. How do I get the extension methods back?

All tutorials I read before used Extension property to get the extension of a file. How can I get the type of file as a phrase? Example: .vb is 'Visual Basic Source File'. Like what Windows does in the Properties window of a file.

2 - Saves the server XML file it into a folder separate from the root folder of the application.3 - Deletes the local XML file in the root folder of the application.4 - Copies the server XML file to the local folder of the application.5 - Opens the application.6 - Closes the updater.Now when the application opens, it reads this XML file in the local folder. When I run it stand alone, it works fine and can find this XML file. However, my problem is when the application is opened by the updater, it can't read the XML file in the local folder. I check for this file doing File.Exists(XMLfilename) and it returns false but like I said, if I close the application and reopen it it works fine.
I'm thinking that for some reason the updater is "locking" this file so my other process can't read it? I can't close the process before I open the original application so I'm not sure what's happening here. My Update Folder is the users ApplicationData folder and the root directory of the application is in the Program Files folder.
This is my code in the updater:
Dim ImageDir As DirectoryInfo
Dim fi As FileInfo

I have a project where I am looping thru specific files in a directory using a For Each FileInfo in DirectoryInfo.GetFiles() statement. My question is if I overwrite the current FileInfo object, will it still retain the reference to the object even though the file is no longer the same?
Code Snippet:
For Each fi In folder.GetFiles("*.idx")
Dim reader As IO.StreamReader = fi.OpenText()
index = reader.ReadLine()
values = index.Split(",")

I have built a recursive file system crawler that amasses file system data from a file share. I use the FileInfo object to get my metrics, however, I am finding that in especially deep file structs, that the ol' 260 character MAX_PATH MS bug crops up ':8-0:'. This puts me in my angry place, since I do not seem to be able to get around it no matter what kind of programmatic tom-foolery I try.
So far, I have tried:- converting to 8.3 format --> no good path + filename STILL is > 260 (believe it or not) - tried to go with a Straight low-level API approach
What I have found is some pretty Sketchy information regarding VB implementation of the kernel32 api's in this regard (just try & find a createfile port for vb.net, I couldnt)
Anyway, I guess I was hoping that someone else has run into this pain, and knows how to make a surefire way to get a file's information (size, dates esp), regardless of how long and painful the path may in fact be...

what im trying to do and what i have done so far is probably a little backwards not sure sure how to id it any other way.when the user generates an error because a particular file doenst exist ive got my dialoge box to generate an .txt file for each file it errors on, so that the administrator can check and update missing files as an when - shouldnt be many files missing in the first place, should just be new product ranges or item just launched.what im stuck on is:
1. is there a better way
2. how do i open a .txt file and add the extra lines to it, so i re use the file but keeping the previous data.

Public Sub WriteTextFile(ByVal SourceToWrite As String, ByVal LocationToWrite As String)
Dim file As System.IO.StreamWriter
IO.File.Delete(LocationToWrite)
[Code].....
This is a module I made to write to a .txt file. Every time it adds a new line with null value. wouldn't really bother me but it adds but then something that only suppose to have like 3 lines in it ends up with 5000 over time, anyone know how to not add that extra line while writing file?

I have an array called lines() which is basically an array indicating which lines to read from a file. for example lines(1) = 0 means 'read the first line from the file', lines(2) = 4 means 'read the 5th line from the file' (counting from 0 not 1) The program first reads the file (which has a lot of random lines) so it can identify which lines match my criteria. The way I store the line positions is this:
For i = 0 to noOfLines -1 'total num of lines in file
If count = match Then 'this is my match criteria
lines(x) = i 'store the line in the array

I am using VB 08 running an openfiledialogue wanting to get the result of the GDS file (*.gds) to be the default extension at the drop down menu instead of All file when the openfiledialogue box opens.
I coded it with:
OpenFileDialogue.Filter = "GDS File(*.gds)|*.gds|All files|*.*"
but the results i get in the open file dialogue box remains as all files being in the drop down menu as the default file extension. How to i set it to ".gds" format?

I've been asked to re-write an application that was written sometime ago by another programmer. This application reads data from a database table, massages it, and then writes out the results to a text file that is later shipped off to another company. When I run my new application, it generates a file that, according to the byte count, is twice the size of the file output from the old application. However, to look at the two files with note-pad they look identical. I found that by using 'Ultra-edit' that the new records have a low-value byte hex '00' between each real character.

I have UAC turned off and am logged in as the Administrator and it still can not locate a file that I can see in Windows Explorer. The file I am looking for is PakMgr.exe.

I am writing a program that will read and write to a file using the My.Computer.Filesystem namespace, and when I append my data file with the code shown below under SaveFile subroutine, it sometimes places extra ControlChars.Newline at the end of the appended text. Sometimes it places one extra newline, and sometimes it adds 3-6 newlines. I have tried everything I can think of to make it add just one newline at the end of each append, as I will be using the newline char to flag each entry on retrieval. I am working out some algorithms in this project to use in a project that will keep track of data in a file using csv format(just practicing saving/retrieving data from a file). The extra newline characters that are added will become a problem when I start to sort the data to display. my xSaveButton click event:
Private Sub xSaveButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles xSaveButton.Click
Dim boolAppendData As Boolean
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists("myData.dat") = True Then

\root\Folder1\abc.txt

Why would I use an extension method instead of just creating non-extension sub or function?
For ex, I could have an extension function called IsNullOrEmptyOrAllSpaces on String, which does a check as its name implies. Or I can write a stand alone function that does the same thing. Other than having the extension show up in Intellisense, is there any advantage? Is a call to the extension quicker/more efficient than a call to a regular function?

Using the below code I want to set the '*' to any file. This folder (C:ewtemp) will only have one TIF file in it at a time so I want it to use that file as TextBox1, but that filename is dynamic, but always with extension .TIF.
TextBox1 = Convert.ToBase64String(StreamFile("C:
ewtemp" * ".TIF"))
Know how to do that?
