Overwriting File During A For Each FileInfo In DirectoryInfo.GetFiles Loop?
Jan 6, 2012
I have a project where I am looping thru specific files in a directory using a For Each FileInfo in DirectoryInfo.GetFiles() statement. My question is if I overwrite the current FileInfo object, will it still retain the reference to the object even though the file is no longer the same?
Code Snippet:
For Each fi In folder.GetFiles("*.idx")
Dim reader As IO.StreamReader = fi.OpenText()
index = reader.ReadLine()
values = index.Split(",")
[code]....

If I want to bind the files of a folder to a gridview, I can just do this:
GridView1.DataSource = New DirectoryInfo("C:MyPix").GetFiles
GridView1.DataBind()
...And this asp.net
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server">
[Code]...
...But if I want to bind it to a repeater in stead, I would think I could display the filename like this:
<asp:Repeater ID="Repeater1" runat="server">
<ItemTemplate><%#Container.DataItem("Name")%></ItemTemplate>
</asp:Repeater>
...But that gets me the error "No default member found for type 'FileInfo'."

How do I (i) sort the array of type FileInfo returned by the DirectoryInfo.GetFiles method by (file) CreationTime in descending order and (ii) once the array is sorted efficiently load it or convert into a Queue object (of type FileInfo) for subsequent processing. I thought of using the queue object as it handles things on a FIFO out basis and I'll be adding to the queue as new files arrive.

I checked the contents of the array at the end and it only held the last records within the text file, which suggest that it is overwriting the array, how can i prevent this?

I have the following VB function which takes a FileInfo object as a parameter:
Public Shared Shadows Sub Start(ByVal filePath As FieldInfo)
XmlConfigurator.ConfigureAndWatch(New System.IO.FileInfo(filePath.ToString()))
End Sub
In another class I have the following code calling that 'Start' method. But VisStudio indicates there is a problem with the 'FilePath' argument that I'm passing.

All tutorials I read before used Extension property to get the extension of a file. How can I get the type of file as a phrase? Example: .vb is 'Visual Basic Source File'. Like what Windows does in the Properties window of a file.

the program im working on is a form with multiple controls (textboxes,combobox, etc.) and it goes out and reads in a text file called test2.txt and plugs in values to the controls. the user will be able to change text in the fields and when they hit apply, it needs to overwrite the file.
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim theFile As String = "c:\temp\test2.txt"
Dim lines() As String = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines("c:\temp\test2.txt")
[code]....
with the given code, it errors out and tells me the file is already being used and can't be copied.how can i go about closing the file and THEN overwriting it?

i have made a program that takes info from your registry and uploads it so I can fix it and you can download the new version of a key that makes things work faster.... when someone uploads a file, it works good, and i can look at the ftp's text file and see it, but every time someone ELSE uploads something, it overwrites the previous text file and makes another one, which deletes the first one. i would like so that when another person uploads something, it will just be on the second line then third, so on so forth.

I'm creating an app that will be run via scheduled task, it will save an XLS file with the following naming convention:'S14-PROORDEREXP-Thursday' (the Thursday will change depending on what day of the week it is)I have the following line of code to save this excel file:
VB
If gstrJob = "S11" Then
xlWorkSheet.SaveAs(gstrFilePathS11 & gstrFileNameS11 & gstrFileTypeS11)
Else
[code].....
this will work fine the first time this scheduled task runs and there are no existing files but at the end of 1 week when I will be overwriting the existing files, how do I tell the application to overwrite the existing files without waiting on a yes prompt from me which it does in debug mode?

The program I am making uses a save dialog box and when I save a file it works fine. When I save and overwrite the file it seems to append the data. For some reason it keeps all previous data and just writes the data again. I'm using the XMLWriter to save the files. Is there any way of fixing this?

I am going to handle an event to write all files in a directory to a text file.But only the last file's context is saved successfully, I think that because of overwriting.

I have been having problems with creating a download list of files for a downloader and was getting unexplained "File Does Not Exist" returns. My .avi files were returning found but but .exe and .txt files were getting the not exists.
I have now found by pulling in the whole directory and examining the file contents that my .exe files are showing ".exe.exe". My .txt files are showing ".txt.rtf". Wow, browsing the file directory in Server 2008 only shows a single extension. I don't see an option to display the extension as a column, just the "type". My directory looks like this:
Name Type
File1.exe Application
File2.txt Rich Text Document
File3.avi AVI File
I had renamed some of these files, maybe I just cannot rename files. I will try using originals ans see if I am ok. Maybe I need to rename the offending files without the displayed extensions. Is this just something weird with the server browser?

I have written a program which reads the text from the text file cleans it for some specific letters or phrases and then saves it in another text file. I am having a problem in rewriting the processed or cleaned data (after it has removed some phrases and characters)onto writing the file.
I have successfully written the text on the file except one problem. In each loop when each string is cleaned and is written on the text file, it overwrites the previous string. What I want is that it should write in the next line or in the same line.
My code is given below:
Private Sub btnopen_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnopen.Click
FileOpen.Title = "Please select the file"
[Code]...
how can I write the text in the new line and avoid overwriting of text in my text file.

2 - Saves the server XML file it into a folder separate from the root folder of the application.3 - Deletes the local XML file in the root folder of the application.4 - Copies the server XML file to the local folder of the application.5 - Opens the application.6 - Closes the updater.Now when the application opens, it reads this XML file in the local folder. When I run it stand alone, it works fine and can find this XML file. However, my problem is when the application is opened by the updater, it can't read the XML file in the local folder. I check for this file doing File.Exists(XMLfilename) and it returns false but like I said, if I close the application and reopen it it works fine.
I'm thinking that for some reason the updater is "locking" this file so my other process can't read it? I can't close the process before I open the original application so I'm not sure what's happening here. My Update Folder is the users ApplicationData folder and the root directory of the application is in the Program Files folder.
This is my code in the updater:
Dim ImageDir As DirectoryInfo
Dim fi As FileInfo
[code].....

I'm trying to load the most recent file from a directory, but my following code doesn't work. Am i getting something obvious terribly wrong?!
Dim myFile = Directory.GetFiles("C:UsersJoeDesktopXML Logs").OrderByDescending(Function(f) f.LastWriteTime).First()
I get two error messages:
Data type(s) of the type parameter(s) in extension method 'Public Function OrderByDescending(Of TKey)(keySelector As System.Func(Of String, TKey)) As System.Linq.IOrderedEnumerable(Of String)' defined in 'System.Linq.Enumerable' cannot be inferred from these arguments. Specifying the data type(s) explicitly might correct this error.
And:
'LastWriteTime' is not a member of 'String'.

I have built a recursive file system crawler that amasses file system data from a file share. I use the FileInfo object to get my metrics, however, I am finding that in especially deep file structs, that the ol' 260 character MAX_PATH MS bug crops up ':8-0:'. This puts me in my angry place, since I do not seem to be able to get around it no matter what kind of programmatic tom-foolery I try.
So far, I have tried:- converting to 8.3 format --> no good path + filename STILL is > 260 (believe it or not) - tried to go with a Straight low-level API approach
What I have found is some pretty Sketchy information regarding VB implementation of the kernel32 api's in this regard (just try & find a createfile port for vb.net, I couldnt)
Anyway, I guess I was hoping that someone else has run into this pain, and knows how to make a surefire way to get a file's information (size, dates esp), regardless of how long and painful the path may in fact be...

I'm doing a project now. I'm having a problem on getting specific file type from my computer using the .getfiles function.
Here's my codes.

Dim filepath as String = "C:"
dlgOpen.CheckFileExists = True

What I wanted to happen is when the openfiledialog prompted and once I've selected the file, the file information I've specified above must show on the application as a label. But nothing appears. The file name only appears on the text box beside the open button. It should also appear above the button and the text box as a label. How could i possibly do that? And how could I select just one file at a time from a folder with 150 other files in it? When I use getFiles, it only gets all at the same time everything that's in the folder even if i've only just selected one file.

I have a directory 'C:Test' with three files in it:
A23456789.txt
A1.txt
G 5.txt
And I run this command:
Dim FileArr = Directory.GetFiles("C:Test", "*1.txt", SearchOption.AllDirectories)
All three files are returned.I understand that this is by design and .NET searches the 8.3 short file names as well.But is there any way to override this and search the actual file names only?Surely, in this day and age there must be a function to do this. Or do I have to write my own?I would like the search function to have the same behavior as the Windows Explorer for consistency.

I have a utility that is a simple exe that is not installed compiled with VS2005 and works well. But when I upgraded to VS2008 the utility can no longer locate files in the active system folder. I have UAC turned off and am logged in as the Administrator and it still can not locate a file that I can see in Windows Explorer. The file I am looking for is PakMgr.exe.

When I use the code Dim di As New IO.DirectoryInfo("C:")it works fine, but when i use a string variable named "infos" i.e.Dim di As New IO. DirectoryInfo(infos)which takes an input from user, it gives me an ArguementException "Illegal Characters in Path".I tried replacing the variable, checked its value in the msgbox which is fine, but the double quote is added directly when it executes the IO.DirectoryInfo line and throws an exception. (Check the attachment)I have also tried infos.Replace("""",String.Empty) to remove the possible double quote, but it still holds that double quote.And when I use the same variable "infos" with substring to get the Drive, it works fine

I'm making a timer program, that I want to be able to store "unlimited" timer profiles, that someone can load and use. Now I've created a form that you fill with data, which then gets saved to a .xml file in a pre-defined directory. I'm now working on some sort of code that will:
1. Search the directory for .xml files
2. Find any .xml files and convert names to strings
3. Store the strings in a dropdown menu, so that when one is chosen, it loads that profile.
I think I have 1 down:
System.IO.Directory.GetFiles("C:Simple Timer")
Dim di As DirectoryInfo
di = New DirectoryInfo("C:Simple Timer")
di.GetFiles("*.xml")

First I want to tell u all I am an absolute beginner at using VB.NET and other programming languages and am going to start learning VB.NET.What I am trying to accomplisch I couldn't find trough Google I am trying to make a Windows GUI based tool in VB.NET (2010) which deletes files by fileage with some other settings.I have a Form1 with:
TextBox1 - Where I have the output of a slectfolder button
TextBox2 - Where I want to input the File Extention (comma seperated)
DateTimePicker1 - Where the date can be set to delete files before that date
Checkbox3-5 - FileAttributes (Hidden, System and Read-Only)
CheckBox1 - Run in SafeMode (No delete takes place)
This is the delete script I made
For Each file As IO.FileInfo In New IO.DirectoryInfo("C:YourDirectory").GetFiles("*.txt")
If (Now - file.CreationTime).Days > 160 Then file.Delete()
Next
