Asp.net - Escaping Html Character Strings From Dropdown List Box With Datasource

Aug 15, 2011

I have inherited a database that is moving to the web. Problem is that some of the string fields have html characters....

One example is....

"" without the quotes, IT WON'T SHOW UP IN HERE EITHER, trying something else. At any rate it has < and the > signs with text in the middle.

How can I escape any possible combination of html references.

SelectCommand="usp_getSingleStringData" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"
<SelectParameters>
<asp:SessionParameter Name="shrtText" SessionField="shrtText" Type="String" />

[Code]....

VS 2010 Escaping And Unescaping In HTML.

Mar 30, 2011

I've got to generate html files with text data containing > < " and other punctuation and special characters. I 'manually' replace them with < > and " and I wonder can it be done using some .Net Framework class?

Also I'll be interested in 'unescaping' such sequences back to characters.

How To Write Raw Block Of HTML To File Without Escaping Each Line

Oct 17, 2010

I have a block of HTML which I want to write to a file. It contains about 30 lines and it's difficult to escape all the double-quotes in individual WriteLine statements. In PERL, I can do something like the following to write inline HTML and print everything upto <<OUTFILE to outfile as-is, is that possible in VB .Net 2008?

print <OUTFILE
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>GSC Signature</TITLE>
<META content="text/html; charset=windows-1252" http-equiv=Content-Type>
<META name=GENERATOR content="MSHTML 9.00.7930.16406"></HEAD>
<BODY><<OUTFILE

I could save the HTML in a template file and copy it into a new file each time, but that's not very flexible.

Shared Dropdown Datasource Updating?

Aug 15, 2011

I have a goal to have dropdowns populate using a string array as the datasource. Re-binding works well in the dropdown event, but if I make a change to a currently selected line item it won't change until I make the box dropdown again. Is there a way to keep this updated without re-binding the data?

Also, this is one of several dropdowns on an MDI child form. I'd like to make sure they're all synced. For instance if one has "Bob" selected and I change Bob's name to "Chris" I need all the "Bob" dropdowns to change to "Chris". Is there a way to do that without having to cycle through all the windows and call a rebind function?

Finally, I want to know if there's a better way to do it than the way I'm doing it. Since all these children have to be synced, the MDI parent holds the String array as a public property and the children each leech off of it.

VS 2008 Using A Listbox As A Dropdown Datasource?

Jun 14, 2009

I gather MATTER NUMBER and PATENT NUMBERS in a listbox on a dialog form - that I pass to the main form after the dialog closes.I then ask for CASES on subsequent dialog forms and want to have drop downs for MATTER NUMBER and PATENT NUMBERS that "have the suggestions" of what was entered in those list boxes earlier.So - I've been using DATASOURCE for binding to datatables and thought to myself - heh - I can probably set the DATASOURCE of the DROPDOWNS - and it works!

Public AddMatterNumber As ListBox
Public AddPatentApp As ListBox
MatterNumber.DataS

VS 2008 Random - New Character Out Of The String And Then Remove The Character From The List Of Characters

Dec 12, 2010

[Code]...

For each character of this string I want a new character out of the string and then remove the character from the list of characters that still maybe used for other characters. It may not get the same character, you could basically just call this encryption, but it's not what I am making. I don't want to waste my time doing this one hour while VB can do this for me in <1 second.

Prepend A String To All Strings In A List Of Strings?

Aug 5, 2010

I have a list of strings. For each string in that list, I want to prepend another string. I wrote a method to do it, but I was wondering if there was something already in .NET I could use to do this. It seems like something that could be built in, but I was not able to find anything.

Here is the method I wrote:

Private Function PrependToAllInList(ByRef inputList As List(Of String), ByRef prependString As String) As List(Of String)
Dim returnList As List(Of String) = New List(Of String)
For Each inputString As String In inputList
returnList.Add(String.Format("{0}{1}", prependString, inputString))

[code].....

It works, but I would rather use built in functions whenever possible.

VS 2008 Using List Of Strings Or Array Of Strings?

Oct 16, 2009

I'm migrating from VB6 to VB.NET, in hence my questions below:

I have to write a function that returns array of strings.

How can I initiate it to empty array? I need it since I have to check if it's empty array after it returns from this function.

Is list of arrays better for this purpose? If I use a list - Is it empty when it firstly defined? How can I check it it's empty?

Character Replacement In Strings?

Nov 30, 2010

How fast can I replace characters in a string?

So the background on this question is this. We have a couple of applications that communicate with each other and with client's applications through sockets. These socket messages contain non printable characters (e.g. chr(0)) which need to get replaced with a predetermined string (e.g "{Nul}"} because the socket messages are kept in a log file. On a side note, not every log message will need to have characters replaced.

Now I started off on this little adventure reading from This MSDN link which I found from a different post from this site.

The current method we used...at the beginning of the day...was using string builder to check for all the possible replacements such as...

Public Function ReplaceSB(ByVal p_Message As String) As String
Dim sb As New System.Text.StringBuilder(p_Message)
sb.Replace(Chr(0), "{NUL}")

[Code]....

This so far has been the fastest way I have found to process these messages. I have tried various other ways of going about this as well like converting the incoming string into a character array and comparing along with also trying to loop through the string rather than the chrArray.

Preventing CheckBoxList DataSource From Rendering HTML?

Oct 28, 2011

I am using a CheckBoxList in a VB.NET web project. The elements are pulled from a DataSource which is populated elsewhere in the system.

The problem is, if someone put in some raw HTML, the CheckBoxList seems to render it rather than assume plain text.

In this screenshot, for example, I entered <a href="http://www.google.com" onmouseover="alert('123');">hover here</a> so now whenever you hover over that CheckBox, an alert window pops up. This seems like a potential for XSS and I would like to disable it altogether.

I have tried googling and searching SO for someway to disable HTML rendering such as this, but haven't found anything relevant, so my apologies if this already has been answered elsewhere.

IsNumeric Returns True For Strings Containing A D Character

Nov 25, 2011

I had a strange error in a VB6 app this morning and it all stems from the fact that IsNumeric is not working as I expected. To me this seems like a bug.

This code displays 4.15877E+62 in a message box:

Dim strMessage As String
strMessage = "0415877D57"
If IsNumeric(strMessage) Then

[Code]....

I am guessing that the runtime engine is incorrectly thinking that the D is in fact an E? I think this is a bug though as the exact same code in VB.NET outputs not numeric Is this a known issue with IsNumeric?

Communications :: Send 8-10 Character Strings From The PC Serial Port?

Dec 1, 2011

I have quite a bit of VB6 experience but now am trying to create my first VB.Net project. The project is very simple - it just needs to send 8-10 character strings from the PC serial port. The problem I'm seeing is that VB.Net is always sending out a 0x0A character after each 'WriteLine' call. Using VB6 it was necessary to manually send out any End Of Line characters. My application requires that no extra EOL characters be sent after the string.

I've inherited a VB website (I'm a C# developer by trade) and need to do some changes. On loading it into VS2010 it won't compile/run because it has a <!-- --> pair surrounding some code in the style section of each form and VS is saying this is an unexpected character sequence.I'm assuming it's a vb comment tag, but I've Googled it to with either making VS accept them, or advice on what to change them to so the original intent is not lost. NB I've tried <%-- which I use in C# but that doesn't appear to work either.

Example:
<html>
