I'd like to block unwanted application from running in my system, mostly setup until given access by my application. I would have a white list of allowed application.

I heard that vista already contain the .net frame work so didnt installed .net frame work in machine. I checked in vista it shows .net frame work is in machine. We have a current implementation of a log file manager where it's two main purposes are to 1. rename files generated by other programs with a date/time stamp so they create new ones, and 2. delete files older then X amount of days from a specified folder. The program also makes it's own log file which records when these events happen.Do you think the Logging Application Block would be useful in this instance? The old file manager is written in VB 6.0 and an upgrade to VB .Net would not take too long, but is it worth it to try and implement LAP into it?
View 1 RepliesI'm having a problem with some users, my vb tools always check at the splash screen a response from a server with a simple:

This actually works for most users but in some clients the firewalls I think they block this call or bypass or something like that, I found that after telling the user to turn off the firewall everything works ok, now I have some users that according to them they don't have a firewall or they already disable and still they have the problem.
You can see from the image the error message they receive, so my question is do you know any kind of free tool that I can send to the user to maybe log what program or whatever is blocking the program to connect?
So I created an application with vb.net, I added Messenger type Api in preferences, compiled my program and everything was fine. However I can't run the program from other directories. It says that the .dll is missing. I'm trying to include the .dll to the program somehow - no success, how that should be done? Friend tried to help me and said I should add "Application block" something to the references. I can't find that though.

For this discussion, let's say the MsgBox Title is "SQL Application" and the Message is "SQL Error - Try Again".
I have found some examples of looking for the MsgBox to pop-up (by watching for the Window title) and then sending key(s) to press OK, but I was curious if the whole process could be avoided. Otherwise, the user still sees a MsgBox or a "flash", even if it's only temporary.

Currently i am using Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition and whenever i try to debug my program the window it's supposed to run in is just a gray block. When using WCF together with Enterprise Library 5.0's validation application block, is it possible to customize the error messages which are sent back to the client? I've added the ValidationBehaviour-attribute to my service contract and the FaultContract-attribute to the operation:

The service returns ValidationFault as it should, but instead of having the error message and tag which I've defined, it uses some generic values. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Which is the best way to store application and user settings of an application running with multiple instances?My problem is that using the vb's "Application Settings" one instance would overwrite the other one.I want to identify each instance with a number passed via command line argument. I could use this number to identify the appropriate settings of the running instance, but I see in a local INI o XML file a better way to handle that.

We are trying to store DateTime values in an Oracle Date field. However, the precision is being lost. Currently only the year, month, and date are being stored. We need better precision than this.

Let's say 10 desktop shortcuts, all with different names/icons, point to and can start the same exe application from the same directory. Is there any means for the application to know the distinct name of the shortcut that was doubled_clicked. Also is there any means for a running application to know if it was started by command line, by a double_click on the exe, by a double_click on a shortcut that points to it, or by another process' call?

I'm thinking that I should be using a global mutex in the services app and checking for it's existence in the other apps. Is this the correct way to proceed?

But whenever I press a button to start some process, it does what it does except I can't click the window until it's finished. Otherwise the whole thing freezes. This essentially stops me from doing more than 1 thing at a time, because if I click another button (or anywhere) when something's running, it just freezes my program.
View 1 RepliesAt user login, launch an app I have created. This app opens a web site in a webbrowser control, logs the user in to the web site, and parses links from the resulting web page. These links are links to launch citrix sessions on another farm.
Create another app that appears on the start menu for the logged in user. User clicks on this app, it communicates with the launch app to basically click the href associated with the citrix app within the webbrowser control. Then this app will go away...
I have already coded the first app and figured out how to click links within the webbrowser control. What I can't figure out is how to go about implementing the second app, that runs as a separate app, but communicates with the first app to do its business. I see a plethora of options such as MFC, AppDomains, RPC, and so on. My question is which is the best practice to have one app interact with another and have the other app take actions based on that interaction? I prefer to stick completely to vb.net.
A good example of how I would like this to work - a web browser (IE, FF, whatever) is open on the desktop, user clicks a link in an email, link opens in running browser. An action in the mail client causes action in the browser.
