C# - Area Of Focus In .Net Programming?

In an article in techrepublic about 10 tips to go from a beginner to an intermediate developer
one of the auther's suggestion was "try to become an expert in at least one area of focus" and learn advance idea in depth about that area. With this in my mind I have programmed for about a year mainly for database application in .NET envirnoment (VB/C#), Currently I want to focus or be an expert in at least one area of .NET environmt. As a resutl I had skimmed some area in .NET such as WCF,WPF, ASP.Net MVC ...etc (just reading an overview of different books). My current job . also demand on database programming mainly for desktop application.
So can you suggest me a list of areas of focus in .Net where I can delve on it beside my current job.
I am not sure whether they can be an area of focus I had some ideas such as SOA with WCF
MVC web application Database design and modelling
Edit @sajoshi I have some strength on data modeling and objected oriented design and mainly I like to work in domain modeling and object persistance with ORM tools.I have little interest on UI design.

The dilemma I am having is what programming language to focus on for development. Currently the options are Java, C++, C# and VB.Net. I plan on filling in some gaps of my undergrad by taking some high level math courses, data structures, algorithms and will probably take all 2 or 3 levels of one programming language.

Trying to set the viewable area to a smaller screen area and have it cycle through as the person moves using collision detection to move the backgroudn image. Here is the start but its off to a bad start so far.

Dim Mapy As Integer = 2000

Basically the forum size is set to 600x2000 but the client should only allow you to view 600x600. I want it to add +1 once you "collide with a invisable box I'll add and this will redraw the screen.

I designed a form and managed to fit graphics inside it. Picture box is 465 pixels high. Form1 is 500 pixels high. SnapShot of the screen verifies that the 500 pixel height is the overal height. It includes the upper Bar and lower frame. Is there an instruction to set the From's inner pixel size and not overal?

Is there a more efficient/easier way changing the backcolor of a control when it has focus and lost focus? Let's say I've got 10 text boxes. Right now I would have 20 different events...10 for Enter event and 10 for Leave event. Of course, entering would change the back color to "green" and leaving would change it back to "white".

Here is what I've done:1) Created an Excel COM add-in for Excel 20032) Added a NotifyIcon to the Windows taskbar notification area (aka system tray) during ThisAddIn_Startup3) Added a ContextMenuStrip with a ToolStripButton to the NotifyIconWhy is it when I right click on the NotifyIcon, Excel gains focus? If after clicking on the NotifyIcon to display the ContextMenuStrip I choose not select an option on the ContextMenuStrip and instead click back on the Excel window, I get a weird flashing cell in Excel.I've created a video of the problem to help you see what I [url] anyone know how to prevent this? Ideally, I'd like to be able to click back on Excel and only have the ContextMenuStrip close and Excel regain focus.

I guess thats what I need to do, Im trying to allow the user to right click on the top of my form, and my custom Context Menu Strip is displayed, not windows context menu strip. I guess somehow i would need to get the size and draw a rectangle on the non client area and see if the user has right clicked in that rectangle? if so how would I get the area of the non client area?

I have two forms in an application. One is he background and then I show another keypad form called with the show() method (not showDialog) because I need to perform some validations on btn click.
The kepad has 10 buttons and an Enter Button. The problem is that the form keeps loosing focus (I checked this with a messagebox which keeps poping up once for focus=true and again for focus=false, it continuously keeps losing and gaining focus) so it does not process any keypress events untill i click somewhere on the form. I tried using me.focus() in form load event but to no avail. The forms TopMost property is also set to true.

I have a textbox on a form that when it loses focus it updates other text boxes on the form. But before it updates the other textboxes I check the input value in the textbox lostfocus event if it is undesired I return focus to the the textbox and alert the the user with a msgbox. However where my problem is, is that when the cancel button is clicked I don't care what the input in the textbox is because the changes are being canceled but if the value is undesired the it keeps returning focus to the textbox instead of canceling the changes. Is there a way to see what control was clicked on before or in the lost focus event? Can't seem to figure it out tried enter and leave events but no luck!
So for example something like this...

I am having problem setting focus on specific cell in my Datagridview1 . On Form1 when clicking on cell 3 in any row, I am callig a Dialog1. However, when done working with it, and closing the Dialog1, the focus returns to cell 3 in my Datagridview1 . I like to set the focus on the next cell(4) making it the current cell.
I have tryed :
DataGridView1.SelectionMode = DataGridViewSelectionMode.CellSelect
DataGridView1.CurrentCell = DataGridView1.Item(4, e.RowIndex)
DataGridView1.CurrentCell = DataGridView1.CurrentRow.Cells(4)
And few other things, I am always getting this exception: Operation is not valid because it results in a reentrant call to the SetCurrentCellAddressCore function.

I avidly create games in VB.net. Being a hobby programmer I give my games away for free. Since I'm a hobbiest without formal training I do try and educate myself on proper programming principles and follow them when programming such as OOP. There are however some things I have obviously missed being self-taught that perhaps I would know if I were formally educated. Once such issue that has really been my bane is how different classes (from now on referred to as objects) 'know' about each other WITHOUT programming specific interaction.
Okay imagine this, you have a space game and the following objects

Now each one of these objects has a Health, X,Y and Z private members and properties that are all inherited from clsSpaceEntity for argument sake. Now one way of programming collision between them would be to code out the following logic in the main game loop

Now this might seam okay if your talking about the simple example above but some of my games have tens or even HUNDREDS of objects that interact in this basic way. Is there a way in OOP to do the following... for each thing that inherits from clsSpaceEntity check against every other object that inherits this type (except itself) and if they collide then reduce health next? This sort of ability for a type of objects/class or whatever to be 'aware' of another and how they are the same/different and interact would save me tonnes and tonnes and TONNES of coding.

I have the latest versions of VS 2010, .NET 4.0 and MVC 3 and I have a problem using areas in asp.net mvc 3 when using vb.net.
I do the following:
Create a new visual basic asp.net mvc 3 project. Select Razor as the "View Engin" and call the project "TestApp".
Create a new area called "Test", it will be in the folder: /Areas/Test.
Add a new empty controller called "PageController.vb" in /Areas/Test/Controllers/".
Add a new folder in /Areas/Test/Views/ called "Page".

These are identical with what you get if you repete steps 1-7 and use c# (only difference is that you will get c# code that is equal to above vb.net code).
I repete: If I do the steps 1-7 in C# it works, but it will not work in vb.net!

I would like to use Graphics.FillRectangle or Graphics.Clear with semi-transparent colour (e.g. ARGB=128,0,0,0) to darken entire area of the Graphics object except some specified (rectangular) area:I know this can be achieved with four FillRectangle calls, but I wonder if it cannot be done easier.I am aware of simple clipping (Graphics.SetClip), but this allows me to clip everything outside the specified area and I would like to achieve the opposite.

Im working on 'Virtual iPod Touch' project and I'm almost done..but one thing annoying me..im using drag 'n' drop to make lock slider..1 got 1 picturebox with lock arrow and 1 black (transparent/invisible) with allowed dropping...and its all ok but I want only I can slide (move mouse) in area for sliding (see a picture, but I think all of you understand).

I'm currently using the following code to take a screenshot of my desktop:

I have an application (chat) that I am developing for our company (special requirements). We are mostly using WinXP computers. I want it to be topmost and docked to the right, the problem is, I don't want it to overlap other windows that people are working on.
Is there a way to change the default area that other programs can maximize to? Basically, I want it to look something like this: Is something like this possible? I'm using VB.net so all .net answers are accepted.
