C# - DotNet DateTime.ToString Strange Results
Dec 15, 2009
Why does: DateTime.Now.ToString("M") not return the month number? Instead it returns the full month name with the day on it. Apparently, this is because "M" is also a standard code for the MonthDayPattern. I don't want this...I want to get the month number using "M". Is there a way to turn this off?

Is the default format of ToString dependent on anything server related? Here's the issue: I'm testing and have tested an application on my local machine and ToString(), by default, is returning in a format of "MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss tt", however on our server it appears to be returning as "dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss tt" which the consuming application is not expecting and causing errors.
Dim uvExpireDate = DateTime.Now.AddMinutes(1)
Dim token = String.Format(fmtString, uvExpireDate.ToUniversalTime().ToString(), [various other params])

I am working on which is displaying "Live" CPU stats for a remote Server.I am creating a SWbemRefresher and everything works great, for about 2 minutes. Then I start getting "Odd" results, almost like the objects in it get corrupt.Let me explain. So I create my Refresher like this and iterate through each item in the collection, writing the results to a database:[code]....
The above works fine but after I while I start seeing strange results.So I may see things like 5 processes with the same ProcessID (which is impossible, or so I beleive?).Processes with apparently the same CPU usage which I know is incorrect.I also see processes with the incorrect ProcessID, so for example I may see ProcessID 123 and Process name CALC and then all of a sudden I will get ProcessID 123 process name winlogon, so the results are out of sync with each other.Attached is an example screenshot of what I mean which only shows two processes, but it does seem the longer I run the code (so say for 5 minutes) the more processes appear like the screenshot.
My thoughts are - the objRefresher.Refresh() does not finishfinishes half way through the loop, resulting in "skewed" results. I dont konw how I can wait or check to see if the Refresh has finished?I have tried everything I can think of and it doesnt make sense to me. Maybe a fresh pair of eyes will spot an obvious mistake .The target server is a Windows 2003 x86 SP1 box, the code is running on a Windows 7 x64 box.

I'm just converting a date to a string but I'm getting this error. It's not listed as one of the normal exceptions to the datetime.tostring method. Googling around, it looks like it's an actual bug where it thinks StartDate is an int--but that's no help to me, as I just need to convert the date.
dim StartDate as nullable(of date)
dim Date1 as string
if not StartDate is nothing then
Date1 = StartDate.tostring("yyyy-mm-dd")
end if

I have a situation in which I want to get the hour component of a DateTime, but I want the 12-hour value that would go with an AM/PM. The only way I could find to do this was to use a date format string. Since h is the format character used for this, I figured I would use the method:
.ToString("h")
However, this would give me an error. But when I used it with a space and trimmed it:
.ToString("h ").Trim()
It would work fine. Why am I not allowed to use "h" as a format string?

I'm trying to create a Windows form application which uses a few data grid views to pull data back from a SQL Server database. I've managed to get the data back okay from the tables but what I want to do is filter that data dynamically based on values input by the user from a combo box and a date time picker. Each of the data grids display production data for a machine but the combo box and date time picker will allow the data to be filtered by shift and date respectively - how to I pass the values of these to the SQL query returning the data?

I'm trying to match a certain DateTime value with the current system DateTime. I have a timer and a label on a form. Timer interval is set to 1000. When the form loads, the timer starts ticking. As soon as the current DateTime matches the value of the variable, it shows a message in the label. When I'm writing the following code, the values don't match even if the current system DateTime is equal to the variable. Label1 isn't showing 'Times Matched':[code]The default format of 'Now' is the same as I have stored in dtmVar variable. So there's no question of format mismatch. Does that mean 'Now' is not actually a DateTime property? Provided, my O.S. is Windows Vista Ultimate and all date/time settings are set to default.

I have a form that allows users to select file and then it reads the contents, parses the data and then executes a sql insert statement to add it to a database. What I am having issues with is showing real-time results. Currently, I have the import operation take place on the import form within the OnLoad event. The problem with this is it only shows the final results instead of the results real-time. Is there anyway to do this without creating a seperate thread and delegates?

I'm looking at a small remoting project in VB.NET. Initial research turns up references to msrdp.ocx which my Windows 7 Ult system doesn't have; a filesystem search on the same platform turns up MsRdpWebAccess.dll which doesn't appear to be well documented; finally hunting through COM references in Visual Studio turns up rdpencom.dll labeled "rdpcomapi 1.0 Type Library" which seems to be best documented via personal developer blogs (which isn't encouraging but is a lot better than other options).
My goal is a lightweight remoting application I can deploy to Windows 2000 Client/Server, WinXP x86/x64, Win2k3 Server, Vista x86/64, and Win2k8 Server.Is there anything DotNET Native I can use instead of one of these COM libraries? Is one of these COM libraries better for the job overall than others; and then am I going to have platform-specific compatibility issues if I don't provide support for more than 1 of them in my app?

I would like to download a file using VB.NET (preferably) or C# via HTTPS.
I have this code to download a file over plain HTTP:
Dim client As WebClient = New WebClient()
Dim wp As WebProxy = New WebProxy("[IP number of our proxy server]", [port number of our proxy server])
wp.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
client.Proxy = wp
client.DownloadFile("http://sstatic.net/so/img/logo.png", "c:logo.png")
How do I change this code to download a file that is stored on an HTTPS-server? I guess it has something to do with adding credentials or something.

Initial tests indicate that GDI+ (writing in VB.NET) is not fast enough for my purposes. My application needs to be able to draw tens of thousands of particles (coloured circles, very preferably anti-aliased) in a full screen resolution at 20+ frames per second.I'm hesitant to step away from GDI+ since I also require many of the other advanced drawing features (dash patterns, images, text, paths, fills) of GDI+.Looking for good advice about using OpenGL, DirectX or other platforms to speed up particle rendering from within VB.NET. My app is strictly 2D.

I try to compare Datetime.Now with a Datetime variable I set, using the Datetime.CompareTo() method. I use a timer to compare these every second and display the result, but as the current time approaches the time I set, the result changes from 1 to -1, but never 0, which means these two are never equal. I'm suspecting the Datetime structure contains milliseconds?

I've got an assembly (loaded as ReflectionOnly) and I want to find all the namespaces in this assembly so I can convert them into "using" ("Imports" in VB) statements for an auto-generated source code file template.
Ideally I'd like to restrict myself to top-level namespaces only, so instead of:
using System;
using System.Collections;
using System.Collections.Generic;
you'd only get:
using System;
I noticed there is a Namespace property on the System.Type class, but is there a better way to collect Namespaces inside an assembly that doesn't involve iterating over all types and culling duplicate namespace strings?
