VB6 Conversion To Wrapper To Prevent Null Exceptions

Sep 14, 2010

We are converting a large VB6 application to VB.net. The problem we have all over the code is the .NET converter did not "reorder" the "IF" and other statements in the code to stop execution when a DBNull value exists. For example, we have code like this all over the place.

"If rRow.Item("av_election_id") > 0 And (rRow.Item("Challenged") <> "SUSPD" Or IsDBNull(rRow.Item("Challenged"))) Then"

This causes a error when "rRow.Item("Challenged") is dbnull

The line of code below corrects this issue but we have thousands of lines of code to reorder and refactor.

If
dtAVVoterRow.Rows(0)("av_election_id") > 0
And (IsDBNull(dtAVVoterRow.Rows(0)("Challenged"))
OrElse dtAVVoterRow.Rows(0)("Challenged")
<> "SUSPD")
Then

creating a wrapper class or something to allow us to keep the first example of code above where it will not throw an error when encountering a Null value? I don't know if a wrapper that reordered the If statements, or captures the error but continues the execution somehow?

XmlTextWriter.WriteFullEndElement Tags On The Same Line?

Mar 19, 2010

I am using an XMLTextWriter to create an XML document dynamically (in VB.Net).I want empty tags to appear like this - <Tag></Tag>and not this - <Tag /> So, I am using WriteFullEndElement to end the element tag. But it is writing out the tag as -

<Tag>
</Tag>

i.e. with a newline character between the tags. The web service reading this XML rejects it due to the newline character.How do I avoid the newline, and have both the start and end tags on the same line?

.net - XmlTextWriter Responds With System.InvalidOperationException During Creation Of Second Element?

Sep 8, 2009

I am having trouble with XMLTextWriter.WriteStartElement throwing an exception:

System.InvalidOperationException

when trying to write the second element in my XML document. This error comes back as "The Writer is closed". I have not closed it, so I am guessing it has fallen out of scope?? I have created a class to write an XML file using XMLTextWriter as an object within my class. Below is the relevant code. I have found one other post on codeguru that was never answered with the exact same issue.

Function CreateXML()...
Try
_listDocument = New XmlTextWriter(_xmlDI.FullName & "\" & currentFilename, Nothing)
CreateHeader()

[code].....

I am calling these functions after instantiating a dimension from ListXML (the name of my class) with the following code:

Dim xmloutput As New ListXML
xmloutput.CreateXML()
xmloutput.AddListMember(xmloutput.ReturnWhiteList, currentItem.SenderEmailAddress, xmloutput.ReturnAddAction)

Text -> Excel Conversion (with Extensive Formatting Required After Conversion)?

May 11, 2012

I'm creating a program in VB.net that does the following:At a high level I receive a file in email, put the attachment in a monitored folder, import the text file to excel, format the excel, and then email the excel file to a list of recipients.

Here is my plan:

Completed: Outlook VBA to monitor all incoming email for specific message. Once message is received drop attached .txt file in a specific network folder.

Completed: (VB.net) Monitor folder, when text file is added begin processing

Not Complete: (VB.net) Import text file to Excel

Not Complete: (VB.net) Format Excel Text file.(add in a row of data,format column headers with color/size, add some blank columns, add data validation to some of the blank columns that allow drop down selections)

Completed: (VB.net) Save file.

Completed: (VB.net) Send file to list of recipients.

Obviously the items above that are not complete are the bulk of the work, but I wanted to get some advice on what some of you think would be the best way to approach something like this. The import and formatting of the file are causing me some problems because I just can't decide what would be the most efficient way to do this.

The way stated above. Import to excel -> format Having a template excel that contains all of the formatting already done for me and attempting to transition the data to this document (no clue if/how I can do this). Is it even feasible? Have the template already created and then import the text file to a new excel file, then transition that data to the excel template?

Something I thought about, in terms of formatting the document, was to record a macro of me doing all of the formatting that I'm going to need and then attempt to convert that macro into my vb.net code, but I'm not sure if that will work. I will need to verify that the text file comes in the EXACT format every time correct?

Deployment :: What To Prevent Anyone From Using DLLs

Feb 2, 2010

You developing a application named "DemoSoft" which is going to be a shareware or Premium, you use different DLL's in this project and some DLL's are owned by you, they are very useful and valuable, you are selling this software and are charging the customer for what the software does but since this software uses one of your Valuable DLL, actually few functions from it you have to deploy it and cannot additionally charge for the whole dll. since that would be unwize.now i want to ask what can you do so that This DLL in "DemoSoft" cannot be exploited, meaning end user could use my software but if some thief tries to use my supplied DLL in one of his own app he is unable to do it, in simple terms DLL should work only and only with DemoSoft.

Detect Changes To Registry Prevent Changes

How can you detect when the registry is changed? Furthermore, how can you prevent changes to the system registry? I want to create a security tool, but can't seem to find this anywhere.This is in vb.net.I know the registry is stored as files on your computer somewhere, but I have no clue where it is stored, though I could probably use a FileSystemWatcher component to check it.Then, for prevention, would simply duplicating the registry files and rolling back the changes work?

Encoding - Prevent .net From Differentiating à To A?

Mar 20, 2012

We know a tolower function will turn all A to a How to turn all à to a.The purpose is I am creating ids for databases and id need to be unique. Sometimes the same stores are written as à in one place and as a on other places. This will create duplicate id problem.So I need a function that will turn all à and all of it's variation into a. The same way ě should become e.

Basically I would use utf8_unicode collation on my databases. Letters that count as the same letter under that collation should map to the same character under this function.I need to make sure that all other east asian characers are not affected in anyway.

The program also has a GUI.I want it so that when the user clicks the desktop icon, it does not start a second instance of the executable, but instead reveals the currently running background process. Is that possible?i.e. when the application is started with the "-startup" paremeter, it loads a hidden form2, and closes form1. Prevent A Form From Being Minimized?

Sep 12, 2011

I've got this little 'Sticky Notes' type of application and the form I have is a borderless, taskbarless form and for Windows 2000 compatability I'm using VS 2008 and targeting the 2.0 framework. One of the hurdles I have is that in XP, Vista & 7 when you click the Show Desktop button all of my note's windows get minimized and without a taskbar icon, it's not easy to get them back (at least not for a normal user) & I'm looking for a way to either right after the windows minimize I just have them all show again or if I can skip the minimizing message in the wndproc altogether

I've put together a test app that'll show the messages in a listbox for the form, but I'm not sure how to go about skipping sending the message to the form's base class. Here's a snippet, listMessages is the listbox on the form[code]...
