C# - Thread Start In Form1() Crashing Program On Windows Server 2008

May 12, 2011

I'm getting a really strange error. I have a program that needs to run a thread on startup, and for some reason when I do myThread.Start() in Form1() it will crash with "program is not working" (But only on Windows Server, not on my local machine!). However, if I put the same code under button1_Start() it works no problem. What gives?

EDIT A little extra information: In my thread I have a line of code that uses invoke

Invoke(new Action(() => richTextBox1.AppendText(string.Format("Updating {0}..
", DateTime.Now))));

And for some reason the crashing goes away after I make the thread sleep for 2 seconds before it starts executing. Am I using the right method to execute code on the app startup?

Memory Leak In Program - Server (Windows 2003) Is Crashing?

Feb 5, 2010

working on an application which performs a set of operations on Active Directory based on an op code.The application was developed long back and has been working fine. I recently made few changes, which is causing the Server to run out of memory whenever the program is being run. I also modified the code to make sure that the variables being declared in each function are set to "Nothing" at the end of function so that the memory can be collected by garbage collector. To make sure, I'm also forcing garbage collection to take place at different parts of the program. But, I still continue to have the issue. The program is very big and hence I could not upload it.

The code retrieves a list of rows from a table with opcodes in it and based on operation code, it performs a set of tasks. The problem is that when it loops through each row in the table, the size of memory required by the program keeps increasing (> 1 GB) to the point where the Server (Windows 2003) is crashing. I have tried different profiling tools, but none of them have been able to detect any memory leaks in the program. I'm guessing that the resources are being held up and hence causing this issue.

VS 2008 - Dreaded Clr20r3 System.InvalidOperationException On Program Start ONLY On Windows XP

Mar 11, 2011

I'm typing this up only to document it and possibly save others the three days of frustration and hell I had to go through. Because this unhanded exception was damned near untrappable (it happens on Form.Show(), but since my primary form was affected, I couldn't tell at the time), it's one I know I lost a lot of hair nailing down.

I have an office application. Standard fare utility program that grew to do lots of custom tricks for my place of business. Lots of database providers to pull data from various unconnected sources and crystal reports to make fancy reports from it all.

When I make a change or addition to it, it usually is only needed by one employee, so I only deploy the new version to one computer at a time. Recently, I had to reinstall the program to the whole company. Everything was going fine, until somebody who had a Windows XP machine tried to run it. It was giving a "clr20r3" "System.InvalidOperationException" on program boot. None of my Try-Catch blocks were catching it. Any Windows XP machine I installed it on was failing, and any Vista/Win7 machine had no issues at all.

I spent the next three days trying to catch what was causing it, pulling out references, reinstalling .NET. Searching for references to this error online was futile since System.InvalidOperationException is one of those ultra-generic errors that pop up for hundreds of oddball reasons.

Finally, by happenstance, I found the cause via a single, obscure post on TechArena by a poster with only that post to his name who decided to chime in with his two cents on someone else's System.InvalidOperationException problem.

About a month ago, I replaced the program icon with a new one. I made up a nice Icon, and compiled pre-sized versions of it into a proper .ICO file from 16x16 all the way up to 256x256. I replaced the program icon with it, the links to the shortcuts in the setup program, and the icon on the main form.

THAT was the bug. Because my .ICO file had sizes larger than 64x64, Windows XP couldn't handle it as a form icon! It works fine for the program icon and for the shortcuts, but the form icons MUST be 64x64 or smaller or the program will throw System.InvalidOperationException on Form.Show(). I didn't know this was the issue since this change was over a month old and I hadn't needed to upgrade a Windows XP machine in that time. Windows Vista and 7 can handle large icon files just fine!

Solution, I made a second, WinXP compliant icon just for the main form. Problem solved. My big icon is still used for my program and shortcuts, so they look great scaling to max size in Windows Vista/7 and XP no longer crashes with a cryptic error message.

Exchagning Parameters - Able To Start With Form1, Move To LoginForm, Then Back To Form1 Taking 2 Variables And The "values"

Apr 8, 2010

I need to be able to start with Form1, move to LoginForm, then back to Form1 taking 2 variables and the "values" they have in the LoginForm back to Form1 and using the variables. I start with the main form (Form1) and have the user enter some information. Once they click OK I have the LoginForm open. After they enter their credentials I will check to make sure they are legal users, then go back to Form1 (here is where I need to take the Username and Password with me) to log onto a server using the same credentails from the login form.

.net - Why Cancelling 6 WebRequest Using Task.Start Takes Longer That Thread.Start

Jul 24, 2011

I have custom asynchronous WebRequest class that I am testing to find out how fast the request will be cancelled and found some odd results, that starting 6 WebRequests with TPL and cancelling them right away takes 25 sec, but when I used just regular background threads it took only 5 sec.

Update: Running them without cancelling takes with Task.Start 9 sec and Thread.Start 3 sec accordingly.

With this icon you can maximize the app or exit it.If you exit the app and start it again using the Menu (Start/programs etc) than the application start in minimized mode (and in this case I would like to have it in normal mode) because the setting autostart is still true.Is there a way you can detect when the application start when windows startup using the above registry or when people click on an icon in the programs menu (or desktop)?

Accessing Form1 Properties From Thread

Sep 26, 2011

I have an exceptionhandler function that basically just writes a line to a textbox on Form1. This works fine when being run normally but the second I use a thread to start a process it cannot access the property. No exception is thrown but no text is written to the textbox:

Public Sub ExceptionHandler(ByVal Description As String, Optional ByVal Message As String = Nothing)
' Add Error To Textbox
If Message = Nothing Then
Form1.txtErrLog.Text += Description & vbCrLf
Log_Error(Description)
[Code] .....

Is it possible to access a form's properties from a thread this way or would it be easier to write to a text file or similar and refresh the textbox properties every 10 seconds or so (Don't see this as a good option but if it's the only way it will have to do!).

Get A VB2008 Multi Thread Application Working That Connects To A Local Server Program Using Sockets?

Sep 30, 2009

I'm trying to get a VB2008 multi thread application working that connects to a local server program using sockets. Server requests for this particular system can be more quickly handled by a number of connections, so I've written some code to run any number of data request threads that I choose. The problem that I'm having is that the data returned from the server is getting mixed up and is often returned to a different thread/socket than the one that requested it. Other than that, it seems to work okay. If I use just one thread, then the system works as it should. Pls. see incuded code, which is heavily edited to remove all the other fruit salad. Is there any way to set up the sockets so that data returned to the socket/thread that requested it?

Module StaticDeclarations
Public WithEvents g_SD As New SocketDataClass(New MainThread.MTCallback(AddressOf MainThread.MTResultCallbackSub))
Public WithEvents g_MT As New MainThread(New SocketDataClass.SDCallback(AddressOf SocketDataClass.SDThreadResultCallbackSub))

No Errors But Program Crashing?

May 11, 2012

for our culminating activity we must make a program that uses a bunch of things etc.

i decided to go the extra mile and make sudoku.

The problem lies in generating the puzzle, the program always crashes, but there is never an error. im sure there are easy ways to make the generator, but from what we've learned this is the only way i know how to do it.

Private Sub FirstBlock()
Randomize()
intNumber(0, 0) = Int(9 * Rnd() + 1)

[Code]....

i made a function for each 3x3 square, and what happens is the block its currently on, checks for interferences horizontally, vertically, and within each 3x3 square, because computers process in order, i set it so that it only checks for previous block interferences, since this is the first 3x3 quadrant, there are no previous horizontal/verticals to check.

The code works fine, the problem is when i run it, it says its running but no form appears, i learned to use a progressbar to try and separate each 3x3 block to generate individually, to try and split the processes up 1 second at a time. the problem is, it does run, but it only generates a certain amount before it crashes, and every time its different, sometimes it generates half the puzzle, sometimes 1/3rd, sometimes only the first quadrant.

Program Crashing Using Treeview?

Feb 20, 2011

In a program I have written I have FileSystemWatcher pointed two directories. When there is a change it keys up and using a listbox rewrites the files in the folder to the listbox. This all works just dandy.. however..

I wanted to change the listbox out for a TreeView. When I first initialize the TreeView on program start, no problems, but when the FileSystemWatcher kicks in the program crashes. I have tried running the debug but it crashes without any error, just the windows error that the program has stopped working.

I am running Dual XEON Quads with 8Gb RAM and Win7 Pro up to date on all patches so there shouldn't be a problem there.

Here is the code for the listbox:

'Setup Filewatcher for Scan Folder List
Public scanfolder1 As FileSystemWatcher
Public scanfolder2 As FileSystemWatcher

Program 2010 Constantly Crashing

Jan 12, 2012

This is an annoying issue that started less than a week ago and couldn't come at a worse time, as I have a major project deadline to meet. At least once every TEN minutes, the program crashes with the error "Microsoft Visual Studio has stopped working" -- it only occurs when I am writing/editing code while execution is paused (Edit and Continue), which I do all the time since I am stepping through rather complex subroutines line-by-line. I literally have trained myself to save after each line of code I write, delete, or change, so thankfully I never lose much, if anything, when I restart, but it is irritating and time-consuming having to set up everything in the program and get to the place in the code that I was before. I have installed VS 2010 SP1, tried deleting the .suo file, and a few other supposed fixes that I came across online, to no avail.[code]...
