C# :: Hide Non-CLS Compliant Code From Projects Using Other Languages?
Mar 12, 2011
This question is more out of curiosity than a project requirement or a problem.I have a Non-CLS compliant code in one language (say C#), and I need to use it like that only in my current language (across projects, so making internal is not a choice), and at the same time want to allow other languages (say VB) to be able to call the conflicting implementations without generating compile time error.
For instance,
//C#
public class SecurityService

I'm an inquisitive .NET student without any commercial working knowledge and I have been puzzled by what exactlty are .NET languages meant for? Q1.If you look on job websites, .NET seems mainly used for web applications, not much for Windows applications? (My dream job is to develop standalone small Windows applications.)

visual basic.net is case insensitive so it allows the coder to write without caring or remembering the casing of variables. it also relieves from the 'undeclared variable' errors if you use the variable in another case than the one used in declaration. The fact that its line termination is a line feed makes it even more readable unlike C# or c++ that need good care in the casing and contineous war with following up with the {}, matching them and figuring out which is for which.my question is what are the advantages of c# over vb knowing that both get compiled to MSIL so there is almost no performance difference between the two languages?

I'm using Real Studio 2011r3.It's just a simple game that's a small maze from a bird's eye view and you've got to dodge enemies and what not.But I've been told to make a map array like this: [code] I've got level1map(13,13) as an integer, and the numbers in the brackets are supposed to be ypos, xpos.Say I make level1map(5,7) as = 1, it'll make both the 5,7 and the 7,5 so that you can't walk into them.. even if 7,5 is still = 0.I could have just left something out somewhere, but I've been trying to work this out for days..Oh, and with the 7,5 will let me walk there if I walk from the left or right.. but not from the top or bottom.

I'm developing a new functionality for web site project with VB.NET default language in VS 2008. As my preferred language is C# I create subfolder for C# code in the App_Code folder and add appropriate codeSubDirectories element to web.config file. The problem is that I can't refer VB.NET classes in my C# code. All VB.NET classes and structures are placed in global namespace in the App_Code. But even if I place some VB.NET class in the same namespace I've use for my classes in C#, I still can't use them.

I'm using VBScript and I'm not sure if this should go here, or in the other VB forum, or in Other Languages, so move accordingly. I'm trying to change my keyboard layout to be Dvorak in Windows XP and so far, I've gotten it to work for the most part with Send Keys.
'*************************************************************************
'*Written By:xTorvos*
'*Purpose: To change the keyboard layout from QWERTY to Dvorak on Windows XP*
'* *
[code]....
However, as everyone knows, using Send Keys for everything can be a little unpredictable at times due to computer speeds and such. Is there a way to do this without Send Keys? Perhaps with WMI or something?

How can I have code-sharing between two projects without making a dll?
The issue is: I have a tool that syncs users & groups from LDAP to a database.
Now the tool is a windows service, but testing it as such is very difficult and time consuming.
Which is why I made a console application where I can test the LDAP syncing, and then just copy the respective sourcecode-files over to the service project.
But... keeping the common files in sync is a bit of a problem. I don't want to make a dll, because this probably creates me a problem with the 3rd project, a windows installer (for the service) where I have to use ExecutingAssembly path...
Is there a way to share the code without making a separate dll? Automagic statical linking, so to say ?

i have one project (let's call it project1) that is going to add properties to another project's class. The thing is I wanted to make it automatically. So in my project there are two lines of code which I want to add at the bottom of the class.vb or class.cs in a project called project2. Is it possible? If so, how?It is a data access builder software which after adding some new columns to our database we use it to generate its properties and its parameter to be added in BLL. Since we do it often (changing our database structure) I did not wanted to copy data from data access builder software and add it to project2 manually.

I have a working Windows Forms app (split into an EXE and a few DLLs). Now I've been asked to look at creating another app (MyAppLite) that has only a very small subset of the functionality. Think of it as similar to MS Word Viewer vs. MS Word.
Everything that I need to build MyAppLite is contained in the main solution - essentially I need to use a couple of the WinForms and whatever bits in the DLLs they call into.
What would be the best way to do this?
I was thinking of creating another Project in my solution for MyAppLite, then adding the necessary source files as links (using Add Existing Item > Add As Link in Solution Explorer).
I definitely wouldn't want to maintain 2 copies of the source code. FYI it's a .NET 2.0 VB app, using VS2008.

Is there a way that I can include code or other files from other projects WITHOUT referencing them? I am trying to combine our projects into 1 EXE without DLLs. I do not want to use a self extracting EXE either. Let me know if there is a way to do it similar to the C++ #Include.

I recently inherited a nice size projects with about 100k lines of code and would like to find out what code is actually being run. I've found a number of routines that are not called at all and looking for a fast and automated way to explore the Business Layer to see what other code can be refactored out quickly.
This is an ASP.NET website with VB.NET codebehind and Business Layer.

I'm using LINQ to SQL as my data access layer for a new project.I have added my database tables to the designer and all is well.Whenever I use one of these classes in a function, Visual Studio warns me that 'Type xxxx is not CLS-compliant' or that 'Return type of function xxxx is not CLS-compliant' Is this a problem with the classes that LINQ to SQL generates? Does it matters? Can I disable these warnings anywhere? My VS error list is clogged up with these warnings making it hard to see anything else.

I have a base class with a static function that returns a typed dataset. I have several classes that inherit the base class with a non-static function that returns the same typed dataset. On these methods I get the 'Return type of parameter yadda
is not CLS-compliant' I don't understand where this is coming from. I have non unsigned integers/etc. in this dataset.

I have 2 projects
UI
Functionality
UI references Functionality to call specific functions. Functionality needs to call certain functions that operate UI. This is what I mean by Duplex communication. Is there any way to do this without causing circular dependency?Should there be 1 main project which simply does all the calling acting as a "wrapper" between UI and Functionality?

As an OSS library author, I've always tried to make my stuff CLS compliant. But MS doesn't make this easy. They often put you in catch-22 situations, such as the following:You cannot have a protected variable differing only in case from the public property. You cannot have protected or public variables starting in an underscore or 'm_'. If you want to make a class really extensible, you often need to have protected variables matching public properties. Your least ugly exit is to add a suffix to the variable, like "Var" or "Value". That's nasty and unacceptable to me. I like clean code.I know of no .NET languages that don't support variables starting in an underscore, and I've used them in many places where the variable needs to be visible to subclasses.
I'm tired of the warnings, and I'm planning on turning off CLS compliance at the assembly level on my 30+ C# libraries. Are there any actual problems with turning off CLS compliance on libraries? Any real problems with doing this? Microsoft has issued unheedable guidance on software for decades, with less that 5% of it being worth the bytes it was encoded in. I can't find any evidence that this best practice has any real effect on anything. But, to be careful, I'm checking. And no, this is not a duplicate of the inverse of this question: Any reason not to mark a DLL as CLSCompliant?I'm looking for actual results and effects here, not the advice of a MS intern. For example, if IronPython, IronRuby, or F# are unable to read or write a variable starting with an underscore, that's an effect, although it would only cause a problem for users subclassing certain objects. If a language or tool is completely unable to use an assembly unless it is marked CLS compliant, now that's a big deal.

I'm running Visual Studio 2010 on a terminal server, and have been, with relatively few problems, for some time. This morning I fired up my PC and over the UK's long weekend, the following issue seems to have developed.I've got a bunch of projects (but not all of my projects, and not all of the projects in a given solution) complaining that a particular file (which does not exist on the computer) cannot be opened, and so those projects will not compile anymore. Here's the error:
Error 31 Unable to open module file'C:Users[username]AppDataLocalTemp2.NETFramework,Version=v4.0.AssemblyAttributes.vb':
System Error &H80070003&
I could simply copy the file into that directory and be done with it, I'm pretty sure that will work,EDIT: Okay, now things have gotten to a whole new level of weird. I've rebooted the server, I get the same error message, only now the file it is asking for exists and can be opened in Visual Studio with no problems. another part of the IDE still insists that it's unable to open the module file.
EDIT 2: Can't delete the file because it claims to be open in another program, but I've logged off and logged on again, and there shouldn't be anything accessing it.
EDIT 3: Because there's a wall of comments below his answer, I'll mention here that Jared's suggestion to delete the SUO file for the solutions having the problem (not files specifically to do with any of the problem projects, strangely) was what solved this, eventually.
