Code Organization - .NET Circular Dependency / Duplex Communication Between Projects?
Oct 16, 2011
I have 2 projects
UI
Functionality
UI references Functionality to call specific functions. Functionality needs to call certain functions that operate UI. This is what I mean by Duplex communication. Is there any way to do this without causing circular dependency?Should there be 1 main project which simply does all the calling acting as a "wrapper" between UI and Functionality?

Assuming an architecture as such.MODEL > BLL > DLL
Trying to implement lazy loading in my MODEL I have run into a circular dependency between my MODEL and BLL..Basically imagine a property in my model that I want to implement as follows
Public Readonly Property ProjectCategory As ProjectCategory
Get
If Me._ProjectCategory Is Nothing Then
Me._ProjectCategory = ProjectCategoryBLL.GetProjectCategoryByID(Me._ProjectCategoryID)
End If
[Code]...
I have my MODEL, BLL and DLL in separate projects and because of the fact that my BLL references my model I can not reference my BLL from my model as this would create a circular dependency.

I have 2 applications that needs to talk to each others. After some research, I wanted to go with managed pipe (namespace system.io.pipes). The problem is, the client must send commands to the server but need to also wait for incoming message from the server at the same time. I tried to go asynchrone but it doesn't work.

I have a TCP connection code for client and server communication. It's not meant to be malware but it collects the clients computer information and then connects to the server.
It successfully "connects" but then immediately disconnects.Here is the code for the server:
Dim Listener As TcpListener
Dim Client As TcpClient
Dim ClientList As New List(Of ChatClient)
Dim sReader As StreamReader
[Code]...
I have port forwarding all done and it works if I run the client and server on my own machine. If I run the client on another machine though It gives me a message box saying that it connected with the clients remote IP and at the same time it tells me it disconnected. The client never sends the system information. What is the problem?

I've seen this great example of serial communication in VB.NET
[URL]
I try to use it in a project I am working on but somethings are not clear to me.
1: Now the send and received data is shown in one RichTextBox but I would like to split this into two RichTextBoxes (RtbSend and RtbReceived).It is unclear to me how and were data is assigned to the RichTextBox?
2. the received data is shown in the Richtextbox as one long line, I would like to get a new line for every send message.So for example: I I send "test" four times, I would like to see:
Test
Test
Test
Test
now I see: Test Test Test Test I've tried ctrlf but this does not work.The example describes that "comPort_DataReceived" is executed when data is waiting in the buffer. Where can I see the eventhandler responsible for this? How does it know data is waiting?The problem is this kind of coding is a bit to difficult for me. I want to understand the code before I implement it into my project.

What do I want to achieve: I want to perform some time consuming operations from my MDI winforms application (C# - .NET). An MDI child form may create the thread with the operation, which may take long time (from 0.1 seconds, to even half hour) to complete. In the meantime I want the UI to respond to user actions, including manipulation of data in some other MDI child form. When the operation completes, the thread should notify the MDI child that the calculations are done,so that the MDI child can perform the post-processing.Should I use explicit threading (i.e., create explicit threads), thread pools? Or simply just propose your solution. Should I create foreground or background threads?And how does the thread communicates with the GUI, according the solution you propose?

How can I have code-sharing between two projects without making a dll?
The issue is: I have a tool that syncs users & groups from LDAP to a database.
Now the tool is a windows service, but testing it as such is very difficult and time consuming.
Which is why I made a console application where I can test the LDAP syncing, and then just copy the respective sourcecode-files over to the service project.
But... keeping the common files in sync is a bit of a problem. I don't want to make a dll, because this probably creates me a problem with the 3rd project, a windows installer (for the service) where I have to use ExecutingAssembly path...
Is there a way to share the code without making a separate dll? Automagic statical linking, so to say ?

i have one project (let's call it project1) that is going to add properties to another project's class. The thing is I wanted to make it automatically. So in my project there are two lines of code which I want to add at the bottom of the class.vb or class.cs in a project called project2. Is it possible? If so, how?It is a data access builder software which after adding some new columns to our database we use it to generate its properties and its parameter to be added in BLL. Since we do it often (changing our database structure) I did not wanted to copy data from data access builder software and add it to project2 manually.

I have a working Windows Forms app (split into an EXE and a few DLLs). Now I've been asked to look at creating another app (MyAppLite) that has only a very small subset of the functionality. Think of it as similar to MS Word Viewer vs. MS Word.
Everything that I need to build MyAppLite is contained in the main solution - essentially I need to use a couple of the WinForms and whatever bits in the DLLs they call into.
What would be the best way to do this?
I was thinking of creating another Project in my solution for MyAppLite, then adding the necessary source files as links (using Add Existing Item > Add As Link in Solution Explorer).
I definitely wouldn't want to maintain 2 copies of the source code. FYI it's a .NET 2.0 VB app, using VS2008.

This question is more out of curiosity than a project requirement or a problem.I have a Non-CLS compliant code in one language (say C#), and I need to use it like that only in my current language (across projects, so making internal is not a choice), and at the same time want to allow other languages (say VB) to be able to call the conflicting implementations without generating compile time error.
For instance,
//C#
public class SecurityService

Is there a way that I can include code or other files from other projects WITHOUT referencing them? I am trying to combine our projects into 1 EXE without DLLs. I do not want to use a self extracting EXE either. Let me know if there is a way to do it similar to the C++ #Include.

I recently inherited a nice size projects with about 100k lines of code and would like to find out what code is actually being run. I've found a number of routines that are not called at all and looking for a fast and automated way to explore the Business Layer to see what other code can be refactored out quickly.
This is an ASP.NET website with VB.NET codebehind and Business Layer.

In the "old days" I was working with Linux to create C/C++ programs (really really BASIC...HA!...programs, just learning to program in the courses as an intro) by creating a text file with the source code that was then fed to the compiler/linker that then spit out the executable binary.

May I ask a suggestion about this datagrid. I have this datagrid but it has so many column and I am going to total each and every column. If I am going to put a textbox or label, it'll be kinda difficult because it will not align to the column. Any solution you may suggest?
Another thing is this form for Daily Income. I want the form at the back (Main Form) not clickable unless I closes the Daily Income Form. So that the Daily Income Form will not go at the back of the Main Form. It is like you were saving a file on a text editor that you can't click the window behind it.

I have a Canon IP500 printer on a Silex net print server. I have several XP and Vista computers that print to it.Some print jobs require duplex printing, some require single page.There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this built into Windows in any version that I have seen, other than opening the printer properties and changing the default before each print job, then going through the same steps to change it back, ---really awkward, and people goof it up all the time.I've been looking for code to do this, but all I find is VB6 or VBA samples that I can't get to work in vb.net 2008. One sample I got to compile OK, but it crashes--but it uses lots of API calls.I would think it would be trivial, but I find lots of people trying unsuccessfully to do the same thing.

I am trying to load multiple single page documents and then send them all to the printer in one job. In the end I'd like them duplex printed. At this point I only need to do this with word docs, but I'd like to know if I could do it with other doc types, like pdf? What about printing a one page word document, a two page excel document and a one page pdf document? Have page 1 of the excel on the back side of the word doc, and then the pdf on the back side of page 2 of the excel.

I am able to print pdf files from my Visual Basic 2010 code using the command line arguments technique:
Dim printChart As New Process()

Trouble is, there is no way to manipulate the printer settings using this technique. I'm looking for a way to print the documents in duplex mode.

In my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.
Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.
What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?

I'm running Visual Studio 2010 on a terminal server, and have been, with relatively few problems, for some time. This morning I fired up my PC and over the UK's long weekend, the following issue seems to have developed.I've got a bunch of projects (but not all of my projects, and not all of the projects in a given solution) complaining that a particular file (which does not exist on the computer) cannot be opened, and so those projects will not compile anymore. Here's the error:
Error 31 Unable to open module file'C:Users[username]AppDataLocalTemp2.NETFramework,Version=v4.0.AssemblyAttributes.vb':
System Error &H80070003&
I could simply copy the file into that directory and be done with it, I'm pretty sure that will work,EDIT: Okay, now things have gotten to a whole new level of weird. I've rebooted the server, I get the same error message, only now the file it is asking for exists and can be opened in Visual Studio with no problems. another part of the IDE still insists that it's unable to open the module file.
EDIT 2: Can't delete the file because it claims to be open in another program, but I've logged off and logged on again, and there shouldn't be anything accessing it.
EDIT 3: Because there's a wall of comments below his answer, I'll mention here that Jared's suggestion to delete the SUO file for the solutions having the problem (not files specifically to do with any of the problem projects, strangely) was what solved this, eventually.
