I'm debuging an complex calculation object in my project, and I'd like to show its various and many properties in a textbox, to make my tests easier.
Can I do something like
for each p as someKindOfProperty in MyObject1
debug.print(p.name & " - " & debug.print p.value)
textbox1.text = textbox1.text & vbcrlf & p.name & " - " & p.value

I wonder if anyone can help me - I've not done much with reflection but understand the basic principles. What I'm trying to do:I'm in the process of developing a class that gathers a lot of information about the local system, network, etc... to be used for automated bug reporting. Instead of having to change my test harness every time I add a new property, I'd (ideally) like to be able to serialise the lot as an XML string and just display that in a textbox.
Unfortunately, the Framework won't use the default XML serializer on read-only properties (which almost all of mine are) as they wouldn't deserialize properly [Not sure I agree with the assumption that anything serialized must be de-serializable - MS says this is a feature "by design" which I suppose I can understand - Perhaps a tag to indicate that it should be serialized anyway would be advantageous?]
The initial approach was to make properties gettable and settable (with a throw exception on the setter) but the amount of work tidying this up afterwards seems a little excessive and I would want the properties to be read-only in the final version. What I need help with:My current plan is to use reflection to recursively iterate through each (public) property of my topmost gathering class. The problem is, the samples I've seen don't handle things recursively. Additionally, I only want to inspect an object's properties if it's in one of my assemblies - Otherwise just call .ToString on it.
If I don't have the inspection limited to my assembly, I assume I'll get (say) a string which then contains a Length which in turn will have .Tostring method. For the purposes of this project, I can almost guarantee no circular references within my code and as this will only be used as a development tool so I'm not too concerned about it running amok now and then.

I have the following list Dim ordersToUpdate as New List(Of OrderUpdate)I am using a "For Each" to iterate and update a legacy DB..I am having a LOCKING problem on the DB when the "ordersToUpdate" is large. Instead to puting a Threading.Thread.Sleep to pause, is there a proper way to break the list up into sections e.g iterating 100 at a time?

What I've done is create a User Control Library (Project) and I've added a single User Control to that project. The control contains a single FlowLayoutPanel, and I created a Property on the control itself to pass the FlowDirection from the Control to its FlowLayoutPanel child.
Build, reference, component appears in the Toolbox and everything works fine, but the property on the control does not appear in the Properties window when I go to edit it at design time.

Using Visual Basic 2008 when (in the past) I looked at the properties window for a control, the very bottom of the list of properties has a brief explanation of the specific property selected.
This has disappeared and I can not find any way to get it back. I tried the Tools/Options menu with no success.

I'm working with a form that has a lot of controls on it. Is there a way to print a list of the name properties of all the controls on a form visual studio? I need to change some control properties at run time and it would be easier to code if I had list of the names to look at.

I am creating a dynamic clone method to be used in my custom classes. I want the clone function to be completely generic, so I do not have to make any changes when I add new properties to the class. I am having an issue with regards to making a deep copy a property that is a List. sample code that will enable me to identify with reflection that a property of my class is a List, and then more importantly the code to loop through the the List elements and copy of each of them. I have been able to identify a property as a List by using the NameSpace of the property type, but I'm not a big fan of that method. Either way, I have yet been able to dynamically loop and deep copy the elements of the property that's a List using reflection.

Is there a succint way in vb.net to create an array or similar of each of the properties in a list?
E.g. If I have a list of 'a' and each 'a' has a property 'b', I want to create an array which contains all the 'b's, in the same index positions as the original list.

I have a node that is called AutoEnabled. If this is true the check state of the listviewitem needs to be checked.
vb
m_list.AddRange((From node In Doc...<Join> Select New ListViewItem(New String() { _
node.<AutoEnabled>.Value, node.<Chan>.Value, node.<irc>.Value, node.<password>.Value})).ToArray)
I know how to get the boolean, just not sure how to parse properties.

I have combed these forums and the 'net and can't find an answer to my specific problem. My menu strip disappeared (after deleting a small secondary form within my project). I therefore created a new strip and while recreating the menu items realized that the original menu items are still present, showing in my properties list. I have checked my design file as well and the original menu strip is definitely gone but the original menu items are there. I don't have many items so I would have no problem just deleting the original ones but I can't see them to delete them! I have checked and they are all set to visible. I have also moved everything on my form to see if it is behind anything else.

I'm making a control and I am trying to finalize my design time properties grid. I have several List(of Class) items as public properties and when I click on the design time menu (while testing the control) there is the word "Collection" and a button with an ellipsis (...) that brings up a neat pop up with the buttons Add/remove and all of the public properties of the collection's class on the right hand side. Basically for a non-collection instance of a class (with public properties) I'd like a similar button to show up. I know I could put all of the properties in the main control class and group them, but I like the pop up box feature. Anyway to duplicate this? (think font grid item etc.)

In the form design I set up a TableLayoutPanel, 20x20 cells and in cell (1,1) a PictureBox (called Target) containing the image of a small target. The properties box for Target shows some very promising properties, Column and Row - and if you overwrite the values in the properties box, the PictureBox obligingly shifts to the corresponding cell position in th design. However in VB it is not possible to refer to Me.Target.Row or .Column - neither appears during coding in the menu of properties, and deliberately coding either of them produces an error like
Error 1 'row' is not a member of 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'.
1. Why does the properties box show properties that cannot be altered programmatically?
2. How can my program move Target around in the TableLayoutPanel?

I'm using a DynamicJsonModelBinder from a blog post to pass my JSON data from JavaScript to my ASP.NET MVC Controller as a DynamicJsonObject.
Have a look at the blog post: [URL]
I converted it for my project to VB.NET : [URL]
Imports System.Dynamic
Imports System.Web.Helpers
Namespace MyNameSpace
[Code]....
This works. In my controller, I can access my jsonObject like this: obj.ID '123
But I haven't got an idea yet how to iterate through all properties. I can get all member names as a IEnumerable String Collection (obj.GetDynamicMemberNames()), but how do I use the TryGetMember method to access the value of a member ?

I have a simple XAML file with a grid in it and textboxes. But when using my code it does not find the textboxes by iteration.
VB.Net:
Dim ctl As FrameworkElement = Me.MainWindow
Code:
Dim ChildrenCount As Integer = VisualTreeHelper.GetChildrenCount(ctl)
'ChildrenCount is always zero
For i As Integer = 0 To ChildrenCount - 1
Dim Child As FrameworkElement = VisualTreeHelper.GetChild(ctl, i)
