Check Object's Property For Null Or Empty String?

Jul 28, 2009

I'm using FileHelper to generate object's property. Here is an example of one property:

<FieldOptional(), _
FieldTrim(TrimMode.Both)> _
<FieldNullValue(GetType(String), " ")> _
Public StoreNo As String

As you can see the StoreNo will either have a value or " ", one of the business policy is to check if the StoreNo is empty or nothing if the object's StoreNo is empty or null then the record will not create.

I though about creating an HasValue Function in the class to check the StoreNo and other properties in the object but I feel like it is a hack.

Public Function HasValue() As Boolean
Dim _HasValue As Boolean = True
If StringHelper.IsNullOrBlank(Me.StoreNo) Then

[Code]....

I don't think this approach is an ideal solution. what if the StoreNo is remove or change to something else. What's the best approach to check object's property?

Nothing Equals String.Empty, Null Does Not Equal String.Empty?

Jun 28, 2010

This must've have been asked before but I couldn't locate it. In a mixed code project (VB and C#) we were debugging some old Visual Basic code where a statement as follows could be found:

If Request.Params("xxx") <> "" Then
'do something

I considered this a bug as Request.Params could be null, in which case the statement would've become false which wasn't the idea. So I thought. I just found out, -- probably for the tenth time and I will keep forgetting -- that the following two statements are not equal, while Nothing in VB should be equal to null in C# (thought I):

if(String.Empty == null) // always false
If String.Empty = Nothing Then ' always true

Should I dismiss this as a typical Microsoft backward compatibility effort, or should I consider this a huge error in the VB.NET compiler? Does anybody know the Microsoftean opinion on this oddity?

Null Check Always Returns Null, If Removed Returns Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

Jun 24, 2010

I have some code which gets child items for a menu via the GetChildren function which takes a list of menuData: Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))

For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
If menuData.Children IsNot Nothing Then
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
End If
Next

If I check if menudata.children isnot nothing, it always is nothing because the GetChildren function is yet to run (providing the child items, which do exist). If I remove this check and just have this code:

Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))

For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
Next

Then I am presented with a Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))

Inserting Empty String Field As Null In Access?

Jan 4, 2012

I have a couple of textfields in a Windows form. One of these textfields is allowed to be NULL. When I enter a value for every field, it is all inserted, no problem. When I leave the field (txtGewicht) blank, I can't seem to be able to insert NULL in Access Database.

If Double.TryParse(txtGewicht.Text, 0) Then
klant.Gewicht = Double.Parse(txtGewicht.Text)
Else

[Code]....

This is what I get:

"Cannot set column 'Gewicht' to NULL, please use DBNull instead"

So I changed 'Nothing' to DBNull.value, but it then tells me that System.DBNull cannot be converted to type Double.

Combo Box Selected Item Is Null - Assign An Empty String To It Instead?

Dec 9, 2011

I have a property called ReplacementTo and I set a value to it based on the selecteditem from the combobox, like this:

classEquipmentItem.ReplacementTo = cmbReplcmnt.SelectedItem.ToString

Now I can't use cmbReplcmnt.Text because what I actually need is the value of that SelectedItem

So problem is, if the user leaves the combobox as blank, it throws a null exception.I decided to use the IIf function then:classEquipmentItem.ReplacementTo = IIf(IsNothing(cmbReplcmnt.SelectedItem.ToString), classEquipmentItem.ReplacementTo = "", cmbReplcmnt.SelectedItem.ToString)

Unfortunately I still get the error I tried using a Try-Catch for it and it worked, but I don't want to rely on the Try-Catch, so I was wondering is there a another way to work this through?

Assign Empty String To Property With Value Of Nothing

Jan 5, 2011

In my EF4 EntityModel I have an entity named Users. Users have the common UserName and Password string fields. If I do something like this

Dim u as new USERS
U.UserName = String.Empty
Then U.UserName are still Nothing.

But if I Do Something like this
Dim u as new USERS
u.UserName = "A"
u.UserName = String.Empty
Then U.UserName take String.Empty as value without problem.

The reason is the way that EF4 generate the UserName Property
Public Property UserName() As Global.System.String
Get
Return _UserName
End Get
[Code] .....

I do not want to make two assignations every time I want to set string.empty to a property with a nothing value, and I do not want to remember that I must do it in this way everytime, because I'm pretty sure that I will forget it and then I will introduce bugs in the code. I just want to assign the empty.string value to a property and the property take "" as value.

Currently, whenever I pass a string to the db, if that string is empty, then i set that object to NULL by doing the following:

IIf(DescriptionTxt.Text.length > 0, DescriptionTxt.Text, DBNull.Value)

I was thinking about writing a function to reduce the length of this code, and make it more consistent.However, I was wondering, is there already a way of doing this in .NET 3.5?

When Passing An Object As An Argument To A Method, String Properties Are Populated But Integers Are Null

Jan 27, 2011

I have a class and method exposed to a client asp.net app. The class looks like

<DataContract()> _
Public Class Class1
Private v_string As String
Private v_integer As Integer

[code]....

The method is declared as

<OperationContract()> _
Function GetStuff(ByVal bar As Class1) As String

In the client code I create an instance of Class1 and set the values for v_string and v_integer, but using Wireshark to look at the xml being sent to the server only a value for v_string is being sent as part of Class1. I'm guessing this is because it considers the value of v_integer to be null/not set. Here is an example of the client code.

Dim MyService as New Service1.ServiceClient
Dim test as New Service1.Class1
test.P_integer = 1

[code]....

how different types are passed/used since Integer is a intergral type and String is a class, but can't seem to work out what to do to fix the problem.

Converting String To Object Property Name?

Apr 29, 2009

We have an object with properties, and a a SQL database we're reading in, to create a list of objects, with columns corresponding to each property.if a column is missing from the database (e.g. caused by an outdated version of the database), we want to assign a default value to it.I've created a dictionary, mapping the column name to its default value (both strings).However, I was wondering if it was possibly to somehow convert the column name (string) to an object property (e.g. the string "name" to AnObject.name?), as the property and column name are generally the same.I tried to use GetType().GetPropert("column name"), but I can't seem to do assignments through that)Alternately, is it possible to somehow create a dictionary, storing the object property as the key (and the column name and default value in a struct), and then grabbing it after.?

Reference Object Property Using A String?

Feb 1, 2010

I am trying to make an app that interfaces with Salesforce. Now within salesforce you can customize your database to have any tables or fields that you want/need What I am trying to do is once I do my query, salesforce has your query results returned as a salesforce object. My app basically manages info in salesforce based on rules, sometimes people may need to customize those rules based on fields in the database, however because I dont know what kinds of fields are in their particular database I need to do it programatically...

SO what I want to do is reference the objects property via a string text property name... i.e. if they use a field called "IsFromLebanon" as a boolean I want to be able to access QueryResult.IsFromLebanon. but since I dont know if that field exists or not I dont know how to access its property without spelling out each time. I know clearly thats not going to work, but I dont know how to access the property name without KNOWING the property is going to be there, does that make sense? I dont know if I am making sense or not, it makes perfect sense in my head

Public-facing Property To Return Either A String OR A Numeric W/o Using 'Object'?

Nov 4, 2010

So I've run into a case where I have a class that can store either a string or a numeric value, and I want a single property to return one or the other (it would be a failure for both to be set). I'm using a custom generic class to deal with the numerics (so I can use signed, unsigned, and nullables), and will be storing the string in a separate variable.

In theory, if overloading could be done based on the return type, I could do this quite easily. But .NET currently disallows this. So I am wondering if there is some other really-far-out-there trick (outside of MSIL generation via Reflection.Emit) that could accomplish the same thing.

I'm open to ideas via delegates, pointer dereferencing, generics, mystical rites, etc. Also interested in any thoughts or pros/cons of such possibilities as a learning tool. If using a standard Object is the only way to achieve what I want, then that's fine with me. But It's difficult to find the correct set of keywords to hunt down this kind of capability on Google, so I thought I'd ask here before I moved on to doing something else on the project.

How To Deserialize Empty Element As Null

Mar 7, 2012

I'm deserializing some XML from an old application into an object in my current application. The old XML often has empty elements (<SomeElement />) which are currently deserialized as empty strings (""). I agree that this is the most appropriate behaviour, but it is a minor irritant; I'd rather they were deserialized as Nothing or ideally ignored - the effect would be the same. Is there a means of ignoring these elements? Or can I have them deserialized as Nothing?

Linq Expression Returning Null Rather Than Empty Set

Nov 18, 2010

I am finding this weird issue. When I do this > activities.Where(Function(a) (Not a.IsDeleted And a.ParentId = 100) It returns an in-memory query & when I try opening it up, it throws a object not set exception. This only happens when there were no items which satisfied the condition. Shouldn't it be returning an empty set? When there are items satisfying the condition, then it returns a list & works all good.
