Can anyone point me in the direction of some sample code to get me started. I have briefly looked at .net remoting as a potential development path, from my understanding of how this works, the remoting architecture would require both a client and remote server component, (though I am not a 100% sure on this one), however if this is the case, then it will not fit the bill, as one of the fundamental requirements is that no additional software can be deployed on the servers which are to be monitored

Saving the data on the same computer as my program is not a problem, but I must also make this data available to other users in the network and update their screens in real time. I'm trying to develop a windows application where i can get connected to remote server and look for process state going in remote server.We have many remote servers where automatic installation of software going on. We have an xml file(installstatus.xml) where it tells us at what stage the installation is (Example : Inprogress , Completed, Failed.)
So our aim is to develop a windows application where i can get connected to that servers and look for their installation status(may be we can use installstatus.xml to look for installation status). Every time i connect to a server, the server information should get stored in XML file(i want to create a xml file where all the servers list i connect to should get stored)
The UI at left side should will have list of servers i can connect to. When i get connected to server, at right side of UI, i want to display the status of installation (In progress, failed , completed).
I recieved a gift recently visual studio 2010 ultimate a nice suprise I have been repairing and building PC's and networks for years working in local shops and buisnesses, but always wanted to learn programming so my GF purchased this for me nice suprise. So here is my beginner question. I am making a program that will take check info ( check number, amount, date and person or buisness wrote to). I have no plans on using it just trying to learn variable structures and arrays and thought this type of program was a good start. Now I would like to take the text of a text box in runtime and use that to input a new check number into the variable structure. Just so I am not confusing anyone I will write the basic code

I am starting a new project in VB, a card game modelled to be similar to a real card game.
I have the majority of the program planned out and have even started coding parts of it; my problem comes with the networking.This is a real-time card game (not turn-based) and I want to be able to play with real people (family mostly, so over LAN is what I'm after).
I have tried searching for code samples but I everything I have found seems more complicated than I feel is required for the task, introducing a lot of new concepts and not explaining them.
What I'm after is a simple way to exchange the information in real-time, I don't care so much for efficiency (at the moment) just ease of use - though if I need to wade through a heap of documentation I will. A perfect answer would tell me what the names of some of the controls/methods that would be appropriate are, even if it just re-affirms a bit of the complexity, you do not have to detail anything if you don't want to I just feel a bit at loss as to what exactly it is I am looking for!

View 8 RepliesI made an application that need some time to load. Therefore i want to use a splash screen with a progressbar.
I found some tutorials on how to create a splash, but they are just fake splash screens. They just set the interval at 25 seconds so the application has the time to load. Think thats very annoying if you have a fast computer that could load the application much faster then that. And what if you have a real slow one and the application needs to load longer then 25 seconds.
Is it hard to create a splash screen that only shows itself for the time the application needs to load? And how do i do that?
i want to create an enhanced login screen for a windows vista computer. On my laptop i am able to scan my finger to login instead of using a password. This fingerprint scanner is a program/process on my computer. If this program is able to detect a finger print being scanned and then act accordingly on the login screen, even when the user has not logged in yet, then what i want to do is possible.
All i want to do is create my own security/login screen, perhaps mine can replace the default windows vista one on my computer.
So here are my main questions:
1. How do i make my program/process run on the login screen, before the user signed in? (So i may use my own login program)
2. Depending on the anwser to question 1, how do i replace the default login screen?
I put together a small app I want to use on my local network for service monitoring across a few of my servers.
I'm using vb.net express 2010 with system.serviceprocess imported The problem I am having is that my code only seems to work locally, and will not retrieve the service data for any server on my network.
For example, my local machine is called "office-pc", and when running the app on it, I get all the service information.

But, if I want the service info from my web server called "casper", I use the same code, but i change the GetServices() parameter like so;
Dim localServices As ServiceController() = ServiceController.GetServices("casper")
For Each localservice As ServiceController In localServices
ComboBox2.Items.Add(localservice.DisplayName)
Next
After a few seconds delay, nothing happens, ComboBox2 remains empty.
It was my understanding that GetServices() would get the local machines service info unless a machine name was specified, which in both cases is true.
So why isn't it working? Do I need to set something up on the network servers first?
I am making a program that will put a black mask over an application (like a full screened game). This black mask will fade in and out, depending on certain criteria. Is there a way I can do that with VB? It's to help me dim my monitor without having to push anything.
