Database Backend (.MDB) Copied To Project Directory - Connect To Network Drive

Apr 20, 2009

I'm a bit new to VB.NET and I have a database which I want to connect to an access backend stored on a network drive for multiple users. I can view the Database in the solution explorer and the directory defaults to the project folder. How can I specify the directory to pull from my network drive? VS has copied this datasource and imported it locally which is fine for testing, but i need the file accessible for multiple users. Is this something I do when publishing?

Save Project To A Network Drive?

Nov 20, 2009

I want my high school students to be able to save their VB projects to their network drive folder on the school's fileserver. The students do not have access to the c: drive by Group Policy. VB does not even see the network drive each student has mapped. I have googled around and discovered it has to do with VB not trusting any network folders. There is a supposed solution by using the .net framework configuration tool but I had no success getting that to work. Right now I have them saving their project to their usb drives. They have a tendency to lose or forget those. Is there a simple way of getting those network folders accessable?

Forms :: Determine A Dynamic Drive Letter For A Directory On The Removable Drive And Then Open That Directory In An Explorer Window

Feb 19, 2009

First off a short background of the project I am working on- I am developing a program that will be run off removable media (i.e. USB Flash drive). This will be a virtual desktop which you will be able to take with you and have the same desktop on any system. As we know drive letters can change with each host system the drive is plugged into, I need to be able to determine the path for the flash drive and access a specific folder ( i.e. My Documents)

I have an picture box(representing the icon) placed on my form (form1) and when I click the icon I want to be able to open and view the a specific folder from the portable drive. I need a click event that will determine a dynamic drive letter for a directory on the removable drive and then open that directory in an explorer window.

Connect To A Database Over A Network?

Feb 3, 2010

I'm just getting started with VB.NET and SQL Server 2005. I have VS2008 installed on my machine. My SQL Server is in a domain that my machine is not a part of. Here's my code that I'm using to establish a connection:

Dim conn As New SqlConnection
conn.ConnectionString = "Server=SQLServer.hbug.lan;Initial Catalog=HUGRegistration;Trusted_Connection=True"

This code is part of a console app. that I'm using as a test. I'm just trying to set up a simple connection and then read data from the database. When I run this console app. in VS, the program hangs for a few seconds and then I get an error "SQLServerProvider has stopped working". My options are Debug or Close program. When I choose Close program, then an error pops up in my console window "Error: Unahandled Exception: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I assume this error is spawning from not connecting to the database properly.

Connect A VB Frontend With A Python Backend Using Sockets?

Oct 26, 2009

I have some really nice Python code to do what I need to do.I don't particularly like any of the Python GUI choices though. wxPython is nice, but for what I need, the speed on resizing,refreshing and dynamically adding controls just isn't there. I would like to create the GUI in VB.NET.I imagine I could use IronPython to link the two,but that creates a dependency on a rather large third-party product. I was perusing the MSDN documentation on Windows IPC and got the idea to use sockets. I copied the Python echo server code from the Python documentation and in under 5 minutes was able to create a client in VB.NET without even reading the System.Net.Sockets documentation, so this certainly doesn't seem too hard.

Deploying Desktop Application With SQL Server Express As Backend Db On Local Area Network

May 28, 2009

Basically back in VB6 days, I created several VB6 apps with Access as the backend database. I'd package my Access db file with the application setup, which copied it on to a shared network drive, and then different computers on the LAN could use the same backend database file, and that worked just fine. With SQL and VB .Net, I've done work with a SQL database hosted on a remote server, so you can basically build your query string easily and anyone can connect to it from anywhere, and it works just fine.However, what I'd like to do is have a local SQL express database as the backend for a VB .Net application and make a setup program that can install it in a way that it could be shared on a Local area network, without the user who is installing the application do anything.

I know about building a connection string with the local machine name, but I don't really have any experience with including an actual MDF file with the application. Does anyone know how it works, and is it a better approach? Does it work similar to placing an access file in a shared unc path?I know that ClickOnce (which is awesome) can install SQL express easily on a user's machine. However, the key is that I want SQL express to be installed only on the machine that is going to be the database server in a LAN enviornment, and not on every machine, unless it is neccesseary. And then how does your VB app know how to build the connection string to access the database from any machine on the local share?

Backend Server Detection After Project Deployment?

Mar 30, 2010

I have recently learnt vs '05 and am creating a project in vb.net '05.my question is-During project development, we connect it to MS SqL server 2005 express installed on my system and it works.( I use add datasource wizard,add sqldataadapter,add gridview control,generate dataset,connect dataset to gridview method). But after the project is finished and we create its executable, the project will be run on adiffrent machine with a different server name and hence a new connection string will be required.

How can i make my project detect server details and connect to it, at runtime ? because the user is only expexted to start the server and open my application.the app must connect to the new server on its own. If anybody has an answer or if you know some resource where i can find it, please post here. Any suggestions are welcome.

How To Get UNC Path Of Network Drive

Jul 10, 2009

I am using some like following code to get UNC path of drive letter.
Dim query As New System.Management.ObjectQuery("select * from Win32_LogicalDisk")
Using searcher As New System.Management.ManagementObjectSearcher(Query)
'loops for all drives on system
For Each Mgmt As System.Management.ManagementObject In searcher.Get()

And it was working but now it is giving error. Below is error with stack trace
{"Specified cast is not valid."}
at System.Management.ThreadDispatch.Start()
at System.Management.ManagementScope.Initialize()
at System.Management.ManagementObjectSearcher.Initialize()
at System.Management.ManagementObjectSearcher.Get()

I also want to know alternative way to get unc path of drive that is also not depend on windows API. As there is a class driveinfo to get all drives (including network) on system. Is there any class that also provide complete or unc path information of Drive.

Searching Network Drive?

Sep 2, 2011

I'm working on a program that is used as a tool to quickly search & Open CAD drawings on our network. I have it working for the most part, but it is very slow. Right now I have an ini file with the path to the Directory I want to search for Example "G:" I think the reason this is so slow, is because there are other folders in this directory that don't need to be searched. My idea is to add all of the paths I want the program to search in the ini file, but I don't know how I will have it search through this using vb code

want my ini file to look like this

G:A
G:B
G:C
G:E

So directory D would not be searched by the program because its not in the list.

MyCode
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim PathReader As IO.StreamReader
PathReader = IO.File.OpenText("C:ISOExplorerPath.ini")
