For some unkown reason, my database tables will not drag and load onto a vb form, just get a circle with a slash in the middle. Trying to tanslate the table into textbox's.

I have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.
While connecting database (sql server 2000) to a vb.net form I encountered the problem. After adding the server the table was supposed to be drag to the form but there is a problem in drag and the things are not coming out as they should.

I've tried putting MyBase.ShowDialog() and .Show() and .9000+ other things The only benefit I've got out of using a seperate thread to load from the databse is i can see the screen right away (as oppose to it being a transparent box until it loads) but i cannot move it around or minimize it?is there any way to make it Movable while it loads?
I am using VS2008 and SQLite. I have created a database and several tables and am attempting to populate the tables with data from arrays.
The following code (example) works fine but stops after it inserts 30 to 50 records. I am running the VB code in debug mode and when it stops, I press pause to see where it is. It stops on "SQLcommand.ExecuteNonQuery()" and when I press continue (F5) it will insert another 30 to 50 records.
I do not get an error message. Is this a timeout issue? How do I keep the loop running to the end of the array?

The insertion part of the form works great. But my problem is in the form load part......If i leave a field blank(Null),then perform Save operation,close the form after successful insertion and then reopen the form,then it retains the previous values during the form load......This is only in case where i leave a field blank in the previous data entry in the database.......But if i enter values in all fields then form load is working great.

I've found how to retreive multiple tables like,

I had issues in refreshing a form that is bound to different tables in a database. Various forms allow the user to change and add and update information on the form via the database. I had created a public sub in that form that the other forms could call, after saving the data, that was supposed to refresh the data on the main form. This was not working so I researched the problem. I came across this page which pertains to Form.Activated: [url]
I placed all of the table adapter fills into this event, instead of in Form_Load, and it seems to work now, when the form first loads, and when other forms update data. My question is does anyone have experience using this and what are the consequences, if any, in using this to reload/refresh the data showing on the form?

View 5 RepliesI have to write an application that consists of mainly one main form, but several different things I wanna display. Pretty standard I guess. So there is a menu, some controls, and the main stuff below (ranging form graphs, tables, dropdown boxes, print preview, etc). I would like to use it like one would use frames in html, design an object that is limited to a box or panel that I define. The literature I have does not give me a clear idea of how to do this (yet). The most obvious seem to be the use of MDI, open a predefined form with no borders, maximize it before showing and remove all minimize/maximize options. But that does not work so well. The form inside the MDI parent does not fit the size that is given for it when it is loaded. e.g.

So my main question is: Is MDI the way to go here at all or are there better/easyer ways to achieve this? If MDI is the way to go, how do I sucessfully restrict a child form inside another object, without giving the user any opportunity to resize (i noticed that I have minnimize/maximize/close buttons, even if I disable them on the child forms themselves)
I have this app that gets the files/subdirectories from a selected one (it stores the files with their icon in a listview), I was wondering how could I drag a selected file from the listview into another directory (outside of the form), let's say the desktop.
How can I do this? I have only found examples of how to do drag/drop within the same form.
I found this link. [URL]. I copied the code to my app and tried it. It didn't work for me. I think in may not have worked because I have a panel control with the dock property set to fill and Label inside the Panel with the Labels Dock property set to Fill. So I changed the mouse event names from Form to Label1, that didn't work for me either. One other thing you should probably know is that I have a timer control running as well (don't know if that makes a difference).

The data-entry part works well, but the second part is giving me some problems.ince the second part should really be a simple program, I created a DataGridView of my sql server table via drag&drop (just pulled the table from the data sources).
