.net - DataGridView.Column(ColumnName As String) Gives Error "Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object"

Jan 7, 2010

This is something that has been bugging me for a while as it is easily fixed but not desirable.I have a DataGridView that has 5 columns. The first is called ID.In vb.net the following line gives an error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object": dgvJobs.Columns("ID").Visible = False ' ERROR dgvJobs.Columns(0).Visible = False ' OK

Obviously using the name is much better than a hard coded value to reference the column but wondering if there is anything i can do to get this to work correctly?The datagridview datasource is BindingSource control with the datasource being a dataset.

Error - Reference To A Non-shared Member Requires An Object Reference

Dec 7, 2010

I am opening frmB (variable for FormB - the actual form) from frmA. From btn1 I open frmB like this:

frmB = New FormB()
frmB.Show()

From btn2 (frmB is already open) I bring frmB to the front from behind frmA:

FormB.Show()
FormB.BringToFront().

No problem so far. Now I need to pass an arg to frmB. This is where I am having the problem.

from btn1 (in frmA) I do this:

frmB = New FormB(myArg) '--pass myArg to constructor of FormB -- no problem here
frmB.Show()

then from btn2 -- this is where I have the problem

FormB.Show()
FormB.BringToFront()

I tried placing myArg in FormB.Show(myArg) but that did not fix the problem. What is the correct way to pass myArg to FormB (frmB) in this scenario? Do I need to share FormB or frmB? How do I do this? "frmB" is frmA level variable.

VS 2010 DataGridView - Null Reference On Setting Column Width?

Jun 9, 2010

I have a databound DataGridView, and I'd like to keep one column in front, with a slightly smaller width than the default. The grid's AutoSizeColumnsMode property is set to Fill so that the columns fill out the entire grid. This makes the first column equally large as all others, which is why I need to set its width manually. The smaller column is the first one with the checkboxes. I have two grids that I need to do this with, and for some reason it works just fine with the first grid, but gives a null reference error on the second grid...

Here's the code for the first grid (working fine):
vb.net
Public Sub UpdateTodoGrid()
' Load todo items
todoGrid.DataSource = _TodoManager.LoadAll()
' Set backcolor
For Each row As DataGridViewRow In todoGrid.Rows
[Code] .....

As you can see, the code is exactly the same (except for not setting the BackColor of each row and not using the ReadOnly property*). When I run this code, it gives me a null reference error ("Object reference not set to an instance of an object.") on the line where I set the column's Width. Obviously 'col' is not Nothing (otherwise it would have errored before that line), and there's nothing else there that could be Nothing... I assume that something happens internally in the grid when you set the width of a column, and that there is a null reference there, but obviously I have no control over that.

The grid's are absolutely the same, as the second grid is just a 'copy' (meaning I copy/pasted it in the designer) of the first. So all their properties are equal. I thought maybe the ReadOnly properties were the problem, but I tried putting them in in the same way and the issue did not go away... The first grid is not ReadOnly (because the checkboxes need to be editable), but all rows except the first are, while the second grid is completely ReadOnly.

Asp.net Error Object Not Set To A Reference?

May 28, 2010

Because I rush in development (a lot of whip cracking here) and declare my objects at the top of the function and instantiate inside my try-catch block, I get a lot of the good old "object not set to an instance of an object" errors while doing TDD, and later if I do miss a branch that object was used in (doing VB now, would prefer C#) or just in every day coding,object not set to an instance of an object is a bit vague. Sure the stack trace sends me to the line the error occured at, but it would be nice if I could modify my logging to either name the object or its type because sometimes I have multiple objects on the same line. It's not the end of the world, but in the end it would save me a few minutes each day. how I can pass the info on which object wasn't set?

Fix ADO Reference In W7, Error 3706

Sep 18, 2011

I am running W7 32 bit ultimate with net 2010 development I have an app I want to distribute which works fine on XP & W7 32 bit, but fails on being installed on W7 64 bit, I believe, although not 100% certain the error I am getting: "Unknown Cause; 3706 > Application-Defined or Object-defined error" is related
to ADO

Whilst I have no need to fix my own W7, how do I incorporate in the distributed msi, whatever is required for 64 bit if that is the problem. Or what Instructions are need on the users W7 64 bit pc to resolve this?
