I'm working with vb.net 3.5SP1 /VS2008. I'm familiar with windows threads from C++ but I didn't do it since the 90s.I have 5 threadpool calls (ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem) that do some complex work (they read info from different web pages, regular expressions, etc) and each updates different columns in a data-grid view. They pause for 1 second between each web read with thread.sleep (not to overload the server). My issue is that some of the threads do not complete. I get for example 3 results when I should have 8. Sometimes it works fine. This is an older 3.0Ghz HT machine, I want to test it on the lowest common denominator(and that is all I have ). I tried using Monitor.Enter(ListView1)it seems to help but it is hard to tell. I tried using the thread debug window but it is not really helpful, it seems do disappear during execution. If I remove the threads I always get my data. I'm wondering if something is being blocked? Is there a way to debug this?
Also, does thread.sleep(x) stop all threads or just the thread that the statement is executed in?

I've seen this in two different places & can't quite figure it out. I can think of at least two possibilities but don't have a lot of confidence in either.When stepping thru code I encounter the following:
If x = True Then
y = New ContextMenu
Me.ContextMenu = y
[code]....
x is False. The debugger stops on the If & I press F11 to evaluate it. The Debugger then advances to Me.y.MenuItems.Add(z), which is *not* the next statement that should execute. Nor does it appear as if it does execute as, when I press F11 again, the Debugger exits the Sub, as it should. But why highlight it as if it will execute?This is even more confusing in the next example:
If Not Me.FindForm Is Nothing Then
If Not TypeOf Me Is A AndAlso Not TypeOf Me Is B Then
Me.x = "OFF"
End If
[code]....
Me.FindForm is a Form, so it's not Nothing. Me is type A so the 2nd If is False. The Debugger stops on the 1st If, I press F11 & it advances to the 2nd If, as it should. Then I press F11 again & it advances to FatalException in the Catch block. What? Did the attempt to evaluate the TypeOf Me cause an error? It shouldn't, and it doesn't seem as if it did as F11 again exits the Sub rather than stepping into FatalException. So why did it stop there?
My first thought was that the intermediate code got out of step with the displayed source code. I've seen that in other IDE's with interactive debuggers, but usually because those allow you to run the Debugger without re-compiling the code. Not so with VS-so that seems unlikely.My second thought is that it's stopping there because those are the last 'executable' statements in the Sub. But that doesn't really make sense as, in other Subs, it will stop on the End Sub.

I have a form that contains a datagridview, which is working properly. I want the user to locate specific records that are displayed in the grid. To that end, I have a sub that uses the datatable select method to find rows within the defined record set:
Dim
strFind
As
String[code]......
As far as I know this is working, as no exception is thrown.Is it possible to have the grid display this record if it is found without having to rebuild the grid?

ElseIf rate < .1 Then
X = -1

I have the following Stored Procedures create or replace PROCEDURE WEB_AC
[Code]...
First one: At some point in the application I have the valor parameter (of the visual Basic Function) as a string with spaces that is something like "some string with spaces". When this happens, the stored procedure don't update the table. If I execute the SP directly in the DB (with SQL Developer) all works fine. I know it has something to do with the string missing some quotes(') but I haven't make it work yet. Some ideas on this?
Second problem: Sometimes, when debuging the application, if I interrupt the execution, I start getting the ORA-24338 'statement handle not executed' error for hours every time I try to execute it again. I believe it has something to do with an open transaction. But honestly, as I'm new in working with Oracle, I really have no idea what the problem could be.

I get this error at the Commit of a transaction in a desktop application:
This OleDbTransaction has completed; it is no longer usable.
Other posts I have seen with similar error suggests this can occur if it takes a long time, or contains large amounts of data. This is not the case here.Logging tells me it takes 140 ms from Begin to Commit and about 10 commands executed inside the transaction.It is using an Oracle database.This class is a simplified version of my database class:
Class MyDatabase
Private mConnection AS OleDbConnection
Private mTransaction AS OleDbTransaction
[code]....
Is it not allowed to run a select inside a transaction like this? Or can it be done by running the transaction in a specific isolation level (I see that the BeginTransaction method has an optional parameter for doing this) ? ..Or some other sollution..? In my case, it was not a problem to move the select to run before the transaction started, but what if you need to run selects that must run inside the transaction?

I need to use a SELECT statement to select all data under a column name (like all employee names) and then to add the values to a listbox.
I usderstand that the select statement must be:
"SELECT * FROM EmployeeTable WHERE EmployeeNames LIKE *" (at least I think)
but then what? combobox1.fill ("EmployeesTable") ?

I've been working on a GUI in WPF which I'm fairly new to, having only used Windows Forms up until now. So far, my GUI is very simple: it contains two rectangles, each of which drops a shadow. The shadow creates an effect of rectangles "floating above the canvas" so to speak.
When one of the rectangles is pressed, the myRectangle.MouseDown event is handled such that the shadow goes away, thus creating an effect of the rectangle being pressed down onto the canvas, like a button.Similarly, when mouse button is released, the myRectangle.MouseDown event is handled such that the shadow reappears and the rectangle "floats" again. This behavior make them resemble buttons. Note, there a reasons I want them to be rectangles and not custom buttons.
[Code]...
If the pointer leaves a rectangle while mouse button is pressed, I'd like shadow to reappear. This is arguable simple, because theoretically in this case, any time myRectangle.MouseLeave is raised, the shadow should come back on, even if it was already there.If the pointer left a rectangle when mouse button was pressed, then came back while before the button was released, I want the shadow to disappear again. This one is what gives me problems. No idea how to do this.

I used to write this:
Private Sub Example()
Static CachedPeople As List(Of MyApp.Person)
If CachedPeople Is Nothing Then
[code]....
But then wondered if I could reduce this to:
Private Sub Example()
Static CachedPeople As New List(Of MyApp.Person)
...rest of code...
End Sub
will the "New" bit only be executed once when the function is first executed but in the next call, it will already exist.

I am tryin to access a 2003 Microsoft Access Database using VB in an OleDb format. When debugging the program I continue to get an Unhandled error point to the FROM part of the SELECT statement. It continues to occur regardless of my attempts to vary the input.
In the program my connection statement is as follows:
Dim connectionString As String = "Provider = Microsoft.Jet.OleDb.4.0; Data Source = C:Documents and SettingsTrialsBillings.mdb"
The Select statement is as follows:
Dim selectStatement As String = "SELECT ID, ..., PB " & "FROM tbl_Clients " & "WHERE ID = ?sngID"
