How To Generate A Random Block Of Number Of Cells In Two Dimensional Space

Nov 25, 2009

I am using VS2008. I worked on this problem for a time, but I was not successful doing it. Below is the VS file.I need to produce a grid of cells and have some random features as shown below which is an example of a world of (500 x 500) units (or any other size and grid size). It contains three areas (of 11 cells, Value of each cell = 108), two green areas (of 8 cells, Value of each cell = 137) and one river. The start point of the river should start from one of the world edges and finish to another one. Please note that number of feature could increase or decrease according to user inputs. The question is, how can I produce these features randomly? To clarify the question, I will read the number of areas from a form. I need these features so that the number of cells should be distributed randomly beside (attached to) each other in the world. The rivers occupy one sequential grid line. My problem is how can I randomly generate the features according to number of cells??

Shape Of Really Large Characters Such As Numbers And Alphabetic Characters

May 9, 2011

With the shape of really large characters such as numbers and alphabetic characters + others, is there a way to get that shape as a REGION please?Imagine a really fat snake forming the letter S or two rectangles placed together to form a large letter L or a T like the shapes in TETRIS.

1) Does anyone know of anything in VB.Net that can translate such shapes into a System. Drawing.Region or know of a project elsewhere that achieves this please?

2) While I'm on the subject, how would you SCALE UP / DOWN a System.Drawing.Region please? How would you work out the Transform Matrix required please?

Block All Special Characters Entered In A Text Box?

Sep 26, 2011

I have a text box where users will enter 4 digits that are ONLY numbers 0-9. I have blocked all letters and less than 4 or greater than 4 digits. But, for example if I enter 10.0, it will throw an exception, due to incorrect math used later in the prog. So how can I block the use of a (.) or any special character for that matter! I am using specific msgboxes to let the user know what isn't allowed, and would like to do the same for special characters.

What I have so far:

If Val(txtEntered.Text) < 0 Or
(IsNumeric(txtEntered.Text) = False) Then
MsgBox("Sorry, but letters are not allowed!")

Parsing/Loading A Large File With Unique Characters?

Feb 17, 2012

I am attempting to make an application that can load in a large file that has some unique characters in it. A majority of the file is plain text, and ultimately I need to replace specified values with other values. The file is an InstallShield .ILG file - I am trying to have a small executable modify the "Feature" GUID entered in the file so that future installations/upgrades identify the new type of features it has. It's a fix for some software issues that would really expedite the solve without having someone un-install and re-install the package each time.

The problem is regardless of the methods I've tried to load the file, it doesn't bring over the data. It's a unique file that I do not want to modify/parse any data in other then those specific fields. Anytime I attempt to convert it to string I just get a few characters that are blocks. I've attempted all types of loading methods within VB but it continues to fail.

I've gotten this utility to modify everything from the config files to the proper DLLs it needs to load and the registry it needs to change. But it's this one piece that regardless of my attempts I can't find a way to load and modify the ILG file.

Generate A Random Single-use URL?

Nov 30, 2011

I've published a different take on a log in system on CodeProject [URL] and I've got some free time, so I thought I'd have a look at password recovery/reset.It was suggested on the article that I look into sending the account owner a single use, random url where they can reset their password if the account gets locked because of too many invalid login attempts/forgotten password. So far, I'm thinking I just have to generate a random string in a "recovery" field in the database table for the user's row and then check if the requested URL on the site is the same as the value for that field, then dynamically draw the page server-side.

Generate Real Random Numbers?

Jun 30, 2009

I need to generate 'real' random numbers from 0 to 500 (e.g. 247.214, 477.125, 1.247, 54.078, 147.001 ......etc). I am using this method:

Dim Myrand As New Random
Dim Res As Double
For i = 1 To 10
Res = Math.Round(Myrand.NextDouble, 3)
Next

This method gives numbers between 0 and 1. if I use: Res = Myrand.Next(0,500), then this gives Integer numbers.

The questions is: Is this possible with (Dim Myrand As New Random) or I have to try another way (e.g. Rnd() ) for doing this?

How To Generate Unique Random Number

Aug 2, 2009

I have an application that is made for a game that you have to draw cards for. So what I have done is created a random number generator that generates a random number and then using case statements that number is associated with a picture of the card, which is displayed in a picture box. This part works fine. Each time I draw a card it is not reshuffled so I need to store the random number generated and then if that number is generated again ignore it an generate a new number.

Now to complicate matters even further when a certain card is drawn the entire deck is reshuffled and everything starts over again. Here is what I tried... I tried using arrays to store the numbers but I cannot seem to get it to search the array for the number or store the number properly within the array. The array has to be dynamic since the game is expandable and I will be adding more cards to the game in the future.
