View 4 RepliesI have made a Windows Service program called InvCheckService.exe. I am passing the working folder using the Services Property for this program. I am putting the parameter "D:Inv" into the "Start Parameters:" textbox.In my program I am getting 1 parameter. Its is D:MyServicesInvCheckService.exe which is where I ran the InstallUtil.exe from.

In order to send out emergency alerts in our organization, I created a windows service that checks a web service (WCF) to see if an emergency alert is pending. If there is a pending alert the windows service then runs a windows form application (exe) to display the alert message. Now my problem......These services are running on a windows 7 machine. When the exe for the alert message runs, it pops up a message stating.
View 4 RepliesI'm interested in making a licence key system to incorporate into my programs. I understand the general idea of checking a database for used keys, but I don't know how I can implement a system into my programs.
I had an idea of creating a custom algorithm, creating a file which contains the licence key, which is encoded with the new algorithm. So people can't just guess the licence because they can't understand what the algorithm (like a custom hash) means. On the contrary, would it be possible to somehow set a licence key variable in my program when it is built or installed somehow? Because I don't understand how it would be possible to work out what key the user needs etc...
After writing that last sentence, I realised that when somebody pays for some software or registers, their username and email is put into a database, and then when they want to register the software, they have to fill in their username, email, and then licence key. Then the key will be filled in in the database. Would that work?

This service has several modes of operation which I want to change from time to time. Thus I need to provide some parameters to it.In a scenario I see my service should be controlled from the command line by launching the executable with certain command line arguments. This executable should check at first whether there is an instance of it already running and if it is it should pass the parameters to this instance.How should I check if the service is running - by looking through the processes or through the services?After I'd found my instance one way or another (see Q1) how should my executable pass parameters to it (invoke some method or smth)?My only two guesses about that is that I either use TCP connection or named pipes for that. Is there any other way?

View 3 RepliesI am a EE graduate from about a year and a half ago working in the semiconductor industry as a hardware/test engineer. I wan't to learn VB to do lab level data test and acquisition. I am learning this in my free time at work and home, and I would be using VB to talk with different electronic equipment through GBIP to source, measure, and record data. Anyone have any good ideas of a good book for such applications?? I know there are a ton of books and courses out there, but 99.9% of that information is not going to be needed for my industry application. I also took a few C classes in college, and I have some experience with labview so I am not a total noob to programming. So if anyone has a good book, or refferences that would be really appreciated.Also what version of VB would you recomend me learning?

View 2 RepliesI have been tasked with creating an application that once a specific event is encountered, an email is sent to a specific inbox. The problem is that our anti virus stops all email coming from an "unqualified" executable. Fair enough. So my question is, how do I manually stop the anti virus service(s) using vb.net then restart them once the email was sent? I know in a DOS window I could use net stop "ServiceName" but I don't know how to translate that to be used in vb.net.

Problem: Using the sub routing below, when adding a value to another value the results eventually change from 2-decimal places to multiple decimal places.Basically, the amount stored should always only be 2 decimal places, because the values passed in are always 2 decimal places. Output from calling the sub routine multiple times.
Running total = 329430.75
New Withheld Amount = 710.79
Running total = 330141.54

As a workaround, I have a new routine that uses a custom round function to properly store only 2 decimal places - as the VB round function does not perform the type of rounding desired.I understand that we are removing the value from the dictionary and adding it back..

I am making a program which generates a random number between 1 and 10 and when 7 appears it is suppose to tell you how many tries it took to get the number 7 and then end the application. This is the code I have used:

This code only generates the number 7 and exits the application, each time i click the random button but i want it to show the other number it randomizes too for example 1 2 3 4 .. etc, if u dont understand, please try it, but im trying to say, when i clikc random it just says number 7 (does randomizing in background) and tells you how much tries it took but i want it to show the other number it randomized also and when 7 appears, then exit the program
I'm writing a program to set the sale prices in an sql database based on criteria entered by the user. The application that came with the database crashes when you try to update over 1,000 sale prices at once. The other users also loose connection to the database due to a timeout error...
How can I make my new sale program pause after a certain number of updates as to not bog down the SQL server
i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:

I mean i know i have to code it to call if from a folder but i do not know how to set up the form so i can make my own program. My teacher said that there used to be a thing where you just put in on the from and it did it for you is there a special thing you have to download to do that or do you have to actually go through and code it yourself. I am making a program that is very simple, but I'm have problems with it. It runs like this:Theres a textbox and you enter in any amount you want.Next to that there are three radio buttons, deposit, check and service charge.If you enter in 100 in the transaction text box, and check the deposit radio button, and hit "Calculate" it will display 100 (in a total display box); hit calculate again, it will display 200, then 300, etc..Now lets say you keep 100 in the text box, but you check either "service charge" or "check" and hit calculate then it will MINUS the amount in your total display box. So for example if you had 300 in the total display box, and 100 in the transaction box and you checked "Service Charge" and hit calculate it would display 200 in the total display box, hit calculate again, and it shows 100.. etc..

View 3 RepliesI am making a program in vb.net (visual basic) that has two forms. I have one as a sort of "main" base which will be behind everything. Then I have another additional form which is suppose to go on top of the "main" form. Well I get this to work when I show both of the forms, but I want the smaller (additional) form to be centered onto the main form. If you want an easier sense of it, its a small box in a big box. (all centered and aligned). Does anyone know how to do this?
